The Wheels of Wingnuttery

As predicted:

drudge_obama_bible.jpg

Bush appoints Chief Justice. Obama wins presidency. Chief Justice screws up Oath. Obama retakes Oath. Wingnuts accuse Obama. The wheels of wingnuttery roll on and on.

Adding… For the record, many experts have confirmed that while an accurate recitation of the Oath is mandatory, Barack Obama officially became the President of the United States at Noon on Tuesday. But as we’ve all witnessed, wingnut conspiracy theorists don’t require facts or reality to make their Stupid go fast. See flag pins, birth certificates, Muslim rumors, pledge hands, etc, etc.

So what’s the Conspiracy Theory at work here, exactly? The President conspired with a smirking Conservative Supreme Court Chief Justice to purposefully flub The Oath™ while his hand is on the Lincoln Bible so that he can reswear The Oath™ — again, under the scrutiny of that same Conservative Supreme Court Chief Justice — without the Official Constitutional Swearsies of a Christian Bible? Is that the thinking here?Adding: There is, of course, no Constitutional requirement for Bible Swearsies. Only The Oath™, which Roberts fucked up. So suck it, Drudge.

All Kidding Aside, this whole debacle makes me physically sick. Roberts should immediately make a statement, from The Bench with the full assent of The Court, apologizing profusely for fucking this up for Obama and then validating the President’s legitimacy without equivocation. This is an absolute disgrace, and it’s 100% Roberts’s fault.

I guess he can’t close the deal. Why?Do I get my wingnuttery certificate now?

I keep waiting for them to claim that it was flubbed on purpose so that Obama could take the oath with his hand on the Qur’an.

Looking past the lack of a book where the main character is technically a zombie, did anyone notice the president is black?! How did we miss that?E-mailing Drudge now. The world must know!

It’s to be expected that the right wing will grab onto anything to try to de-legitimate President Obama. That said, I don’t think it was personal, nor a conspiracy. Being an actor, I recognize the “I got these lines down” kind of confidence that disappears when in the actual performance undertaken with too-little rehearsal. In my estimation, Roberts’s real fault lies in that he approached the event as an individual man (‘I can do this off book, no problem”), rather than as the role he plays as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in the mythic structure of American Society. Where’s Joseph Campbell when we need him?As a postscript, for them that are inclined to think in these terms, this is the kind of thing that can be expected when Mercury is retrograde.

Nina Totenberg pointed out yesterday that many presidents have simply said, “I do,” at the end of the oath and that the president’s repetition of it is unnecessary. She pointed out that the 20th amendment guarantees Obama’s term started at noon on 1/20 with or without the oath or the Bible or the jumbotrons.

Of course we all need to remember that this is a guy appointed by BUSH. It didn’t surprise me one iota that this happened.Additionally, from an atheist standpoint, it would be nice to finally shitcan the mandatory religious tomfoolery when swearing in a new president so that ALL Americans can be represented equally. I’m not a fan of the “God bless this and that” statements. It’s something that is said because it’s become expected. Can we PLEASE evolve?

If saying the oath 100% accurate as written in the constitution is a requirement, then we’ve had a whole bunch of pretenders in the office. The Constitution does NOT include the phrase: “So help me God”, so all those who added those words said it wrong.

It’s out of the camera shot, Kat.The Constitution does NOT include the phrase: “So help me God”, so all those who added those words said it wrong.

You’re on to something, Alan. We haven’t had a legitimate president for the last 220 years!

Some needs to tell these idiots that the bible is not required in a swear-in. It’s simply tradition NOT required.
