After Rachel

Dan Rather is a terrible idea for MSNBC at 10 p.m., and I also don’t understand a few of the names on this poll. Lou Dobbs, Van Susteren and Shuster? They already have shows, and Dobbs is arguably one of the biggest asshats on cable news.

I really think it has to be Sam Seder. Stephanie Miller or Arianna would also be interesting, but Stephanie would probably have to quit her radio show and that would suck. Michael Moore might work, but only if it were his old TV Nation / Awful Truth format — but those were weekly shows and it’s questionable whether he could sustain that level of production on a nightly basis.

Here are two dark horse candidates that aren’t on the list: Cenk Uygur or Roy Sekoff. Cenk has a built-in fanbase on both the radio and YouTube as well as an established format. Roy is not only big-time connected in the blogotubes (he is the Huffington Post), but he worked on the aforementioned Michael Moore shows, and he has some name recognition with the MSNBC audience.

Who else? Thom Hartmann? Randi Rhodes? Ari Melber?

I dunno–call me a nativist or a racist or a jingoist or something, but I think Arianna’s thick Greek accent would be a real problem. The night (it was just one, right?) she guest hosted for Rachel was hard to watch; decoding what she was saying was pretty tough, at least for me.

I think HuffPo is a terrific achievement, and Arianna writes well. On TV, she does well in short stints, showing up to be interviewed on Maddow’s show or Colbert’s or other places. But a TV hostess? I’m not sold.

I’m a huge fan of Sammy(on the old show when he would get a right wing tool to call in,too good) and Cenk on the TYT is well informed and would do well on the TeeVee machine. My email campaign has started, that’s how we got Rachel!

  • Kat

While I think Stephanie Miller or Cenk Uygur would be a great idea, I would be surprised if MSNBC chose that route. So far, they seemed to have done most of their promoting from inside the ranks: Rachel was on KO before getting her own show and both Stretch and Chuck Todd were regular contributors before their promotions.I’m thinking this 10 p.m. show may be more of a roundtable-style format. I think Eugene Robinson is a good bet for a permanent seat – he’s everywhere on MNSBC these days. Give Joan Walsh a seat too, if for no other reason than penance for making her deal with Armey. And then perhaps they’ll fill it out with other, less permanent, people. I think Thom Hartmann would be good, along with Stephanie and Cenk.I could be off-base – I would just be really surprised if they gave a relative unknown* their own show.*Referring to people with whom the mainstream casual viewer may not be familiar.

He hasn’t always been popular with progressives, already has two radio shows, and isn’t that telegenic, but I wouldn’t mind Ed Schultz being added to the list of Hartmann (who might be a tad dull/cerebral for a 10 o’clock show), Uygur, or Miller–both of whom are more entertaining and might be a nice compliment to Olbermann and Maddow. Unfortunately, Miller often needs to play off Jim Ward and Chris Lavoie to be interesting; I’m not sure if that could work on TV.

I must not have listened to Seder’s show enough. I tried to listen a few times. I thought he was incredibly boring.Lou Dobbs or Van Susteren? The worst.Thomm Hartman would be my first choice.I also like Robinson, Miller, Schultz, and Shuster.

I say bring back Abrams. I actually liked his show.Or how about going out and getting Aaron Brown. That would be awesome!

  • J M Ashby

Aaron Brown could put a 10 year old who just drank a 2liter of Mountain Dew to sleep. They wont go with someone like that for a 10pm slot.

  • bibimimi

Thom Hartman, uh, no.Randi? Please no!Seder!!

Cenk is a good call – age / demographic is right and we’re in an era of non-standard names.I love Sam…But given the age, a POC would be great. MSNBC is way overly white. Robinson is a good guest, not sure as a host. Oliver Willis and Baratunde are entertaining and on point…but probably not right for MSNBC at 10pm..Ridley? Anyone but Montel selling Obama coins…unless Vince the ShamWow guy is a co-host

  • veralynn

I like Kat’s idea of a roundtable, btw it’s what “Meet the Press” should have done, but that’s another topic!I would love to see Gene Robinson, Richard Wolffe and the bald guy from the veterans group. This way you get domestic, international and military views, since we are in 2 wars. I would like to hear more about the veteran views and how things effect* them and their familes.I think this would be a great format, what do you guys think?*I never remember if it is effect or affect….I hated english

Ed Schultz would be the most likely to bring in more viewers from the center and right. He already has a huge audience. The more progressive commentators might appeal to us more, but entertaining progressives is not the big picture here. Schultz has a way of getting the ear of more lost republican souls and helping them with the difficult task of rejecting their failed ideology. Ed Schultz is also very well connected to actual players in the federal government. To further the redemption of America, the choice is clear: Ed Schultz

    Reza Aslan.

  • veralynn

good choice nano, I totally forgot about him.

I’d like to see Thom Hartmann as the host in a round table format because he’s so goddamn smart. But MSNBC, being the “we don’t want the ‘liberal’ label, 2 hours is enough” pussies that they are, will probably stick us with that fat fuck Lou Dobbs, who already has a show. If they go that route, it’s guaranteed to be in the ratings basement. The KO and Rachel crowd will tune out.

I have to admit to having a slight crush on Aslan, veralynn. I’ve enjoyed watching him on MTP and Bill Maher.Another good smartie would be Fareed Zakaria. He’s not terribly liberal and has access to policy makers the world over. He’s been giving us the picture on how the world views the Bush administration since the War On Terror began.

Agreeing with Lee that MSNBC could stand some color. That said, I say Bob Cesca for the 10 pm slot.QT

Please. Hartmann is a pea wit. He misinterprets or doesn’t research historical matter almost weekly. As many people have written on Seder’s blog, he is also boring, pseudo-nice and a self-aggrandizer.Speaking of Seder, he isn’t going to host a TV show. None of the people who host AAR shows are going to host TV shows because they don’t appear on TV regularly. As someone stated earlier, Maddow had quite a reputation with MSNBC before they gave a show to her. They don’t simply say, “Hey, good at radio… probably good at TV! Let’S TAKE A CHANCE!” Hollywood doesn’t operate in that manner; the east coast media don’t operate in that manner.

Cenk of TYT would be a great choice because:1)-He’s made huge inroads with New Media. The TYT youtube channel reached over 63 million views in 18 months which is astounding for anyone familiar with the format. Cenk would represent an inevitable and invaluable bridge between cable news and the internet.2)-Building off of #1, Cenk could bring in an untapped, younger demographic. You know, all those young people who got involved this last election aren’t necessarily interested in listening to yet another old white guy on TV.3)-He’s had an insanely impressive guest list which includes: Rachel Maddow, Arianna Huffington, Ted Kennedy, Michael Moore, Alan Greenspan, Grover Norquist, Howard Dean, Naomi Klein, John Cusack and way too many others to name. Imagine who he could get on MSNBC?4)-It would add some diversity. Earlier in the comments someone said viewers might be put off by Arianna’s accent. Well, some might argue that people could be put off by a “brown guy” named “Cenk Uygur”. But I’m not sure that’s a useful way of looking at things in light of the man America just elected to be our president.5)-His style and delivery are very different from both Maddow and KO. And he’s proven his tv presence with his stints on CNN-HN, like when he defended Gen. Wesley Clark’s McCain comments. Is he a long shot? Sure. But IMO, if they go with another tired, old host that represents conventional wisdom, they’ll be doomed by conventional, mediocre ratings.

Dobbs is arguably one of the biggest asshats on cable news? It might be arguable if you had said he was THE biggest asshat, but since you said “one of” it became a simple statement of fact.

  • JG

Hartmann would be the best choice–Arianna might be a close second, and would probably get better ratings.

  • exoevolution

Hartmann, Seder, Malloy for 10pm on MSNBC.People with intellect & angry at the Corporate Barons.
