Get Ready for the Next Big Fight

President Obama’s budget apparently calls for:

a significant “down payment” for overhauling the health care system: $634 billion over 10 years. A senior administration official says Obama’s budget calls for financing the overhaul by trimming Medicare spending and limiting tax deductions for upper-income earners.

This is huge. And the Republicans will hate it. Red-baiting all around!

    So Obama is going for the throat in the first term. I don’t know if I could handle him losing because he was really trying to unfuck this country.

    He has to, Joe. He’s got to go for it now while he’s got such tremendous public support – when things start looking up, the support for revamped health insurance will go down – people won’t care as much when they’re not the ones going without insurance.Moreover, if we really want to get businesses back on track, then health care has to be taken out their hands. The costs to employers is tremendous – I just got coverage (after almost 8 years without it) and I pay 30% of the premium. My employer is still paying almost $8000 annually for me. Just one employee. Imagine a small business owner with 30 employees – that $240,000 gone to the insurance companies – $240,000 that could have gone to pre-tax earnings & been taxed. Even with lower business income tax rates, the gov’t would still be taking in a lot more money. OR the employer could give everyone a decent raise, which will then stimulate spending, creating other jobs, and will still result in a rise in imcome tax revenue to the gov’t.Revamping, revising, reorganizing health care insurance coverage is a HUGE factor in getting this economy back on track. Obama can’t afford to wait; neither can we.
