Gloves Off

Stunning display of hackery from Romulan Charles Krauthammer:

So much for the president who in his inaugural address two weeks earlier declared “we have chosen hope over fear.” Until, that is, you need fear to pass a bill.

No, see, here’s how it worked. The president tried all sorts of congenial overatures — for two weeks, he shmoozed and dined with Republicans to attain their input and support. They returned the favor by following Drudge and Limbaugh into the Shit. Fabricating CBO reports that never existed, fabricating line items about ACORN, threatening filibusters and demonizing cherrypicked line items that, when analysed below the surface, actually do create jobs. And, predictably, the spineless blue dog Democrats fell in line behind them.

So the president is rightfully cranking up the volume. It’s not “hope versus fear.” It’s “gloves on versus gloves off.” When it comes to fear, however, I think Krauthammer needs to chat with the state governors who are paying government employees with IOUs about that. He should talk with the half-million-plus people who lost their jobs last month.

Adding… Not once does Krauthammer make a case for the opposite of “catastrophe.” Does Krauthammer seriously believe that everything is going to be fine? I mean, for everyone other than him?

another point for why Republicans should not be listened to:if you notice, every record we set with today’s awful economy is a record previously held under other Republican Administrations.

  • FrictionSoul

Of course he thinks he’s going to be fine. He’s doing what all the GOP has ever done: more wishful thinking, which they easily confuse with hope, which they also confuse with faith.Did anyone see that Murdoch’s News Corp lost what, $6+ billion recently? That’s what happens when you bite the hand that feeds you.

“Does Krauthammer seriously believe that everything is going to be fine? I mean, for everyone other than him? “Righteous.Anyone catch Krugman on Morning Blow? Do Not Watch, but would love to know if he p’wned that asstard.

Krugman went on Morning Jackass? That must have been a pretty lopsided interview in the realm of intelligence. In response to the question of Krauthammer thinking everything will be hunkydoory, the answer is yes of course.People who’s pockets are already lined for life are going to continue to stick to the policies which brought them to where they are. Their bottom line is themselves.

The unemployment rate today is back to 1992 levels. Not the worst since the Great Depression. Everyone needs to chill out. Rushing bad legislation through will make the economy worse, not better.

  • Jeff

failure to act quickly will result in more jobs lost, not less.

^^Chris – that’s “yet.” And regardless – all those real people who lost jobs in order to get us “back to 1992 levels” are suffering right now, and since this is sudden job loss, it’s also likely to produce sudden shock to the system, in the form of defaulted or foreclosed loans, etc. I think we’re trying to avoid that… don’t you?Anyway – I think you got a poor reception, but I also don’t think you have ill intent – just another opinion. So welcome. It’s very very liberal here (I’m sure you noticed), but also, good people are here – and mostly not crazy, as is true in some quarters (I’m sure you know of some right-wing sites that are absolutely insane, along with some left-wing ones). I’m here because here is a bit of left-wing sanity. Enjoy! :) QT

Just watched McCain do the “pee-pants” dance. Evidently a bill can only be considered bi-partisan if all 41 Republican’t Senators sign on!What a total joke!

  • tommy boy

Speaking of a “Joke”, as well as an “Ass Tard” piece of legislation, this Stimulus Bill is just another designed to “Rape” the middle class, and enrich the fat special interest parties that already run this country.(TAKE FROM THE ALREADY BELEAGURED MIDDLE CLASS, AND DISTRIBUTE TO THE WEALTHY!)I can already see it, a long-ass line of Lobbyists all the way down the Capital steps. Open the national Mall!!!Were gonna need the space!!!Change??? Who’s Obama trying to Kid???But, what does he care, as long his wing is holding the power of the Purse strings, and the Premise of Fear over the “Huddled Masses”.

Unemployment being at 1992 levels is only if you are counting stricly people seeking unemployment benefits. This number does not include people who are looking for their first job and can’t get one, and it does not include people who haven’t filed for unemployment. It doesn’t include people who are “off the radar” so to speak…Im obviously not an economist, but I would guess the real number is more like 10 or 12%

Obama said he wanted the bill on his desk by Feb 16th. It’s Feb. 6th. Rushing through legislation has gotten us into trouble before. Remember the bailouts?

  • J

Chris: True. But Obama said he wanted the bill on his desk Feb. 16th at like, the beginning of January. They put the bailout together over a weekend.

Chris – not only the bailouts, but also the Patriot act, come to think of it. I’d be ok with a plan to break the bill up into parts – passing part A (immediate spending) now, and part B – more long term spending, after the break. But that’s really based on genuine intent to pass – whereas it seems that there are a bunch of people who have no intention of doing anything but pushing their own agenda.QT

J M Ashby -I agree. There are many people that don’t get counted. I lost my job in 2006, went on unemployment for six months and was part of the statistics. After the Unemployment payments stopped, I am no longer counted in the statistics and yet I am *still* unemployed. The economy is much worse than most people realize. Krugman is not exaggerating. The corporate propaganda dispensers have kept the true depth of the problem hidden. The state of the economy has been heavily whitewashed for over 3 years. Our media only admitted that we were in a recession when foreign economies began to collapse and it became impossible to cover up. The awful state of the world and U.S. economy has been a huge story in Europe for over 2 years. Since most U.S. citizens are very provincial, they pay no attention to foreign news. I read foreign news and so I know this. That’s also why I am so critical of our corporate propaganda dispensers that masquerade as a news media. When you compare the Sydney Morning Herald to the Washington Times, the WT agenda is rather easy to see.

WOW QT!You’ve welcomed someone to this blog who’s responsible for this little gem:”You’re right, I do support waterboarding. We’re dealing with animals, therefore all options are on the table when American lives are on the line. They’re going to use their tactics regardless of what we do. These are people who’s ideology condones sending handicapped women into crowded areas to blow themselves up.Prisoners at Gitmo are not members of any military, therefore they should not be awarded the same rights…Regardless, I don’t think anyone should lose too much sleep over what happens to the type of people housed at Gitmo.Posted by: Chris at February 6, 2009 12:55 AM”WOW…just WOW!

Likala – I never saw that comment. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.QT
