Naming the Presidents

In honor of President’s Day, I tried to list all of the presidents from memory in less than 60 seconds and, as always, I stumbled on #11 and #12, and I misplaced Benjamin Harrison.

My results after the jump. Click the “Comments” link below to skip over my answers and try it yourself. We’re all on the honor system.

I totally blanked on the ones in bold. For some reason, I thought Benjamin Harrison was succeeded by Chester Arthur, and so I also couldn’t place the president between Cleveland’s two terms.WashingtonJ. AdamsJeffersonMadisonMonroeJ.Q. For some reason, the mnemonic device I learned in 10th grade history for the first 8 presidents has always stuck in my head, while I lost the tricks for all the rest. We were taught “Would A Jolly Man Make A Jolly Vistor?” (gaa-ay!) as a way of remember Washington, Adams, Jefferson, etc., so those 8 are emblazoned on my mind. The bloc from Harrison to Pierce is a fucking presidential dead zone, but I can usually run Lincoln to Present without delay.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has trouble remembering Tyler to Buchanan….they all sucked except the underappreciated Polk. Anyway, I got all the way to Truman in 60 seconds with no mistakes, and I thought I was going fast. I got to Obama in about 75. That was fun.
