More than twice as many Americans approve of President Obama on the recovery bill as approve of the Republicans on the recovery bill. Disapproval of the Republicans is only nine points lower the president's approval rating.
So why are we trying to compromise with the Republicans again?
Adding... Not to put a damper on this 'gasm, but I've been thinking, are the dismal Republican numbers relevant to the larger fight? Perhaps not. All the Republicans needed to do was to control the debate long enough to sabotage the bill. And for now, they've done it.
The only way to seize the moment is for the Democrats and the administration to use these numbers as capital to crank out a better bill. Otherwise, Republicans have a solid 18 months to ride the sinking economy, restore their numbers and dominate the midterms.
