Some of my mom’s coworkers once played a trick on a rather dim receptionist–this at a college, no less–that is now legend there and part of my general lexicon. They put plastic over the phone and told her not to touch it for a half hour under any circumstances because the phone company had to “blow out the lines”. She busied herself for 30 minutes doing anything but answering the phone. Many people were in their little offices, in view of her, trying to be quiet while laughing hysterically.
