My comment.I suspect that there is something to that.Like most models (models always oversimplify), it oversimplifies the complexity of the situation. All of those characteristics are present in everyone in varying degrees. People with more empathy than most become nurses (or similar) but not all nurses are political liberals. But even politically conservative nurses have more compassion than people in general.I have known many liberals that were not very compassionate.People are complex. It’s difficult to put them into neatly labeled boxes. It’s a useful model for thinking about why people behave the way they do.

I don’t remember Lee’s take on homeschooling, but mine is that it’s a good thing that needs to be fully funded. Too often, teens are sculpted based on what they think their peers will think of them, and so they rein in their creative impulses. I also think it needs to be completely regulated; the idea of asshole Christians nursing assholeness in their kids and convincing them that evolution is an evil idea and gays will kill them makes my skin crawl.

I attended a pretty fucking cool open school for a few years growing up. No desks, no grades (evaluations, much more in-depth). No locks on the lockers. Much integration. Much freedom.The building was the first integrated high school in NC, I think, the history was not lost on us. We had photography classes, a tv station, all kinds of shit.Did I mention it was elementary school? Cause it was. It was pretty fucking cool.

Regarding home schooling, I think it can be a great thing– cut down on peer pressure, learn at one’s own speed, creativity and so on. Fe touched on the major downside– how do you find others to have friendships and/or date?? Homeschooling can be isolating, I think.

I’m afraid jane is correct.fe is too far ahead of where most americans are at.fe might do better in Europe. Europeans are more liberal about lifestyles and much more appreciative of art. Netherlands is a good place since almost everyone speaks english. England is too much like the U.S. France and Belgium are great also, but you need to speak French.I had similar issues. I hope you don’t mind that I sent it to my daughter, who generally hates the concept because around here it is always the religion/gays thing, but in retrospect I think she would have benefited greatly from it.
