Senate Passes Recovery Bill

Only the Snowe-Collins-Specter triumvirate voted for it.

Grover Norquist summed up the Republican position:

This is the bill that the Republican Party will be running against in 2010 and 2012 and 2014.

Every Republican ‘no’ vote was cast with the hope that the bill doesn’t work. And even if it does, they’ll claim that the economy was going to recover anyway.

But here’s the hitch with the Republican “the economy was improving anyway” position. Apart from other ways to measure the effects of the bill, governors of both parties can absolutely quantify the impact of the spending. Today, the states are going bankrupt. After money begins to flow from the recovery bill, the states will be able to pay their people, provide their services and the situation with the states begins to improve.

So as we’ve seen with Charlie Crist for example, what the congressional Republicans have overlooked are a lineup of governors who will debunk the Republican attacks by showing how the money turned things around.

I agree that the Republican govs “could” debunk them in 2010, but I don’t have a lot of confidence that they will.

The republican governors are unlikely to debunk anything. They do what their “leadership” tells them to do. Boner called for party unity against the bill and the lemmings fell in line. Country first, my ass. Party first.

I have to agree with veralynn.I think the best we can expect is that they will stay quiet and not deny that the recovery bill saved their butts.Do we know which states could have gotten by without the recovery bill?Any Democrat running in states that *needed* the recovery bill will have to remind people that the republicans voted against it. Republicans could lose more house seats in Florida because of this.

brutlyhonest -Did you miss what Charlie Crist did this week? He’s the republican Governor of Florida and he spent the week telling everyone who would listen that Florida needs the recovery bill to pass. He did everything short of coming right out and saying that the republican party is insanely wrong on this issue. But, see my previous post. Republicans are only allowed to buck their leadership a little bit. Governors have the most leeway.
