Step Away from The Comedy

This AFSCME video story involving Eric Cantor’s spokesman is a great example of how some Republicans just don’t understand smart comedy. Cantor’s spokesman clearly thought the video was intended to be a slam again union workers, but it’s actually quite positive — it’s just voiced in a satirical way. The content is entirely positive and, with the profanity as the hook, it effectively outlines the importance of AFSCME workers.

The outrage against Cantor’s spokesman shouldn’t have revolved around the profanity — the outrage should’ve been directed at how Cantor’s people totally didn’t get the point of the video.

Oh but the hypocrisy of it all.. Eric Cantor is the one who says curse words should not be allowed ANYWHERE…for this to come from his office and NOT a word from him… why is he not firing this guy.. why is he not denouncing it??You can bet if a Democratic Congress person put this out he would be screaming from the top of the Capitol Building how terrible they were and how they should be drawn and quartered… but where is he… what is he saying… all I hear are …crickets!!!!!

Annette – it’s because we call the hypocrisy like we see it, but in the minds of the “liberal” media, this isn’t a story that should be dragged out for days on end.But it really is eye opening to see, as Bob points out, that Republicans have no idea of what the definitions of satire or irony are. This video is a perfect example of why unions are a good thing, but because the parodied voiceover sounds like an attempt to characterize unions as bent-nosed, thieves with *gasp* curse words, the point is completely lost on Cantor, his moronic aide and probably almost everyone to whom it was sent.I just finished a post myself on the very subject about the NY Post’s critic fuming over the Will Ferrell Broadway show. He didn’t get it.(Sorry for the blog plug, Bob.)

Thanks Bob, I’m glad it’s not just me.When I saw this clip, my first reaction was “what an excellent plug for AFSCME.” Awesomely hysterical.I think this Parody version of the PC AFSCME ad is actually more effective than the original it is a parody of.When Cantor finishes his march to irrelevance, we can put him in a box or a bag, leave him on a curb, and AFSCME will take care of him. After all, they do pick up our fucking garbage.
