Turning Up The Fire

President Obama in Williamsburg last night. The more he and other smart people are able to crank up the volume against the zero cred Republicans, the better off we’ll all be.

Adding… Krugman wrote today:

It’s time for Mr. Obama to go on the offensive. Above all, he must not shy away from pointing out that those who stand in the way of his plan, in the name of a discredited economic philosophy, are putting the nation’s future at risk. The American economy is on the edge of catastrophe, and much of the Republican Party is trying to push it over that edge.

The Obama Offense is on the field.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lXpQ09w5aMA quick, simplified, but cogent explanation (with historical context) of what the f#$%&* is going on now in the economy, seen through the eyes of the U.S. Price Administration , ca. 1942. I may have posted this before, but I just can’t resist. It should be required viewing by … well, everyone at this point. Especially as part of Operation Zero Cred.

There are many different viewpoints from economists. To say that one philosophy has more merit that the other, when they are so divided is just not right…The economy started tanking while Democrats controlled the economy. Certainly not entirely their fault…but it underscores how silly blaming one party or the other for economic problems that his been festering for decades is.

That’s a reasonable point, Chris. However, Operation Zero Cred is, to me, a rejection of the republican solutions – more so than the republican party. The president didn’t say “I blame republicans” – he said “I reject these theories.”President Obama promised to do what works, and to stop doing what doesn’t work. I think there are times when tax cuts (yes, even to businesses!) works. But for this particular economic environment, tax cuts is a very inadequate response. Much more is needed, and yet, a lot of republicans seem to be very ideologically wed to the idea of tax cuts almost exclusively – and are standing in the way of the bill because of that orientation. OK – so what we are saying is – no, we voted for a democratic president and congress, so we don’t want republican solutions. We think democratic solutions are more appropriate for the present moment. That doesn’t mean a good idea from the Republicans will be rejected. It does mean that republicans don’t get to set the agenda.QT
