A Tea Bagger Responds

One of the official tea bagger blogs (the one that inaugurates the Coward Rick Santelli as the Chief Tea Bagger) responded to my Huffington Post column. He or she suggests:

[The Democratic Party] is making a hash of the economy big-time.

Absolutely. Squandering the budget surplus on a $1 trillion tax cut for the wealthiest one percent and a $1 trillion-plus occupation of Iraq and a doubling of the national debt was a huge mistake.

Oh wait.

[The Democratic Party] appears to be in desperate need of some new ideas.

You mean, new ideas like emulating the Boston Tea Party? From 236 years ago?

Oh tea baggers, you make it too easy.

Tell me again how populism is awesome when it’s Rick Santelli, but awful and McCarthy-ish when it’s Congressman Frank. Tell me again how the congressional Democrats are McCarthyites while simultaneously accusing the president and liberals of being communists, socialists and Marxists. Tell me again about how you’re against helping families to keep their homes while simultaneously supporting AIG’s $165 million bonuses. Tell me again how the largest middle class tax cut in American history was an atrocity, but the Bush tax cuts for the super rich should never be allowed to expire.

The incoherence is at a tipping point. The wingnuts are really going over the edge, and Americans are tuning them out in droves.

Everyone received a tax cut from BushI’m a tool and a hypocrite.

I’m not sure how you can reconcile your hatred of tax cuts, Bob. How are tax cuts for the wealthy bad, while tax cuts for the poor good?If you think like I do, that progressive taxation is truly Marxist-it punishes the successful, and is easiest on those who aren’t-you see that the only true “progressive” tax is a flat tax.Surely, you know the story of the Kennedy who taxed furs and yachts, believing that the evil rich deserved to pay more in taxes.Well, the tax on yachts was passed, in order to punish the successful….and thousands of boatyard workers were layed off, along with yacht builders, fuel suppliers who suffered, etc etc.How do you reconcile this, Bob? Here we have a case of taxation leading to the firings of many many middle class people working in those boatyards, supply houses, bait shops, lumber dealers, etc etc….I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/819936/posts

“Tell me again how populism is awesome when it’s Rick Santelli, but awful and McCarthy-ish when it’s Congressman Frank.”The difference is that Santelli is just a citizen shooting off his mouth, and Frank is using the power of government to impugn, falsely or not, private citizens.”Tell me again how the largest middle class tax cut in American history was an atrocity, but the Bush tax cuts for the super rich should never be allowed to expire.” I’m not sure who claims the tax cut itself was an atrocity, the objections were the size and scope of the huge stimulus package as a whole,as many do not agree that huge amounts of spending actually will work to stimulate the economy. There were 350 economists who signed a document stating so, including nobel prize winners. The Bush tax cuts should be fair game.”Tell me again how the congressional Democrats are McCarthyites while simultaneously accusing the president and liberals of being communists, socialists and Marxists” The reference to McCarthy is to make the association to using the power of government to intimidate people, that’s it.” Tell me again about how you’re against helping families to keep their homes while simultaneously supporting AIG’s $165 million bonuses” These bonus have no direct effect on people keeping their homes or not, it is not related. These were retention bonuses for people staying on the job to complete a task, which was deemed by Liddy to be of greater importance to preserve and protect the 1.6 trillion dollar tax payer investment, than to not have them there. The bonus money was specifically addressed in the stimulus bill, there was no secret here. But, the real point is that there is no relationship here between having the bonus or not, and helping families keep their homes. If this was true, then by taxing them at 90% this would help families keep their homes, which is not the case.

Hey, Bob, when people post comments, you can tell if it’s all the same person by their IP address, right?I don’t really know much about that type of thing – just wondering.

These were retention bonuses for people staying on the job to complete a task, which was deemed by Liddy to be of greater importance to preserve and protect the 1.6 trillion dollar tax payer investment, than to not have them there.

And I believe 54 people got RETENTION bonuses AFTER LEAVING. How does that make sense?

The AIG bonuses have nothiing to do with keeping people in their homes. The outrage comes from the fact that AIG has gotten $170 BILLION in bailout money, taxpayer money, to keep them from going under. If the government hadn’t bailed them out because they were “too big to fail” these execs wouldn’t have gotten their paychecks let alone a bonus for running their company into the ground.Santelli isn’t just a citizen running off his mouth, 99.99% of “citizens” don’t have a television show to spout off their “opinions” that were pre-arranged months in advance to start this whole teabag ridiculousness in the first place.Congressman Frank, on the other hand, is an elected official who is trying to get my money back, your money back, OUR money back. If “McCarthyism” is your definition of misusing government power, try another term. Maybe Bushism or Cheneyism.

If you oppose the progressive tax system as “Marxist”, then you have bigger problems than anything I might say to you here.Keep at it, tea-baggers!

  • ltmon

I’m not old enough to remember, but during the McArthy days did people using the words “Communism”, “Socialism” or “Marxism” at least know what they actually meant?Or did they just randomly assign them as euphanisms for “shit I don’t agree with and want to make you scared of” like nowadays?

  • milton, the friedman

To understand McCarthy, you have to understand the degree with which Russia had penetrated our intelligence, government, and business world. I’m not defending him, but Russian spying was real, and damaging.

  • jane

And milton, those damn lefty actor types had “penetrated” our intelligence and deserved punishment.Heh, I said “penetrated.”

  • SillyRatfacedGit

I’m not defending him, but Russian spying was real, and damaging.

And exaggerated out of all proportion with reality in order to sustain the career of an incredibly destructive political hack and launch the career of an even more dangerous ideologue that has to resign the presidency in disgrace after he sank our economy. The people that shouted communist in the 50s knew what it meant, but they were really just using it as an insult or as a way to get reelected.

  • ceu

    heh, Jane said “punishment”

ELVIS DINGELDEIN’S DRUNKEN SOLILOQUY – SPONSORED BY MAKER’S MARK WHISKEYIt doesn’t take a genius to host a Conservative Talk Radio show. Strategically shave a chimpanzee, teach it to throw its effluence at The New York Times Editorial pages, cart up the occasional Hysterical Fart Sound, and you’ve got any given half hour of The Rush Limbaugh Show. If the monkey is strung out on Oxycontin and also extraordinarily obese. And stupid. Progressive Talk Radio is for real men, with active intellects

We have become a country where about 30% of the people are perpetually duped. Listening to them its like Bush never happened and they have little or no understanding of history or the current economic situation.I wonder how they think things like roads and cops and sidewalks and parks and libraries and military troops and airports and little green apples that aren’t rained on in Indianapolis in the summertime came from?TAXES! It’s ok to pay taxes it’s ok to contribute back to the country that afforded us the opportunity to become so successful. One other thing…when a company hires someone…the company gets a tax break in the form of a … you guessed it…write off…and get this…as business owners…we only hire people when we need them…not because we pay less of a percentage in taxes.Well thats all for now…I’ll post more of my commie stuff later.

Bob, This is my very favorite wingnut reaction to your story.

First “Teabagger” (hehehe) rants about your article. Then, she leaves this gem in her comments:

Bob,Calm down! You are really clueless here. Not only are you ignoring that the original Tea Party was the culmination of the Empire’s gradual shifting of all the burdens of their colonial governmental structure to the colonists, you are ignoring and/or ignorant on what is going on today. The Fed printing trillions is a tax on EVERYONE. A dollar is just a piece of paper. Inflation that we have been exporting to China is going to flood back. If this cap and trade scam is passed, that is going to be a MASSIVE tax on the poor, who will need essential commodities that will already be too expensive because on the inflation coming. So get your posts ready on how the hyperinflation is all Bush’s fault instead of looking at things with a little more honesty. If you are so naive that you think our debt-driven society will pull out of the death spiral with more debt and that the government can build false bottoms to markets, then you are hopeless. That is why Sentelli doesn’t feel the need to answer to your snarky leader, Jon Stewart. Its not cowardly to refuse to go into someone elses forum and be scolded by a hack douchebag like Stewart. It speaks volumes about your intellect that you have such a weak view of history, the present, and what courage and cowardice really are.Obama is destroying the dollar and you are ridiculing those that understand this for getting a permit from the out-of-control state so their children aren’t thrown to the ground by a SWAT team?? You are a fucking coward.
