The GOP, plainly rejected and sent packing, is stumbling around in a daze trying to figure out how to get back to those heady days of Reagan. Even granting Lee’s earlier point that they really think their way is better – that they’re sincere in their love for America and fear of the Liberal threat, the fundamental problem is this:They have no policies or ideas – just slogans that harken back to good times for fat white guys in suits and a culture largely based on not getting caught.Now, in the absence of all but the most shallow and dogmatic core principles, they are trying to find some way to “rebrand.”Trapped between Rush and the dittoheads, for whom slogans are all you need…slogans and certainty, and those who understand that the party needs to change, but has absolutely no fuckin’ idea how. Change? Into what???Most voting Republicans (and despite their grovelling apologies, Steele and Jindal would certainly be two…David Frum clearly another) – the 30 million who voted McCain but don’t listen to Rush, the dittohead role is political suicide and they want to change. Well, they may not WANT to change…they’d certainly prefer to be elected just as they are…but this is politics. Change or die.In the absence of answers to Change How? and Into What? they simply steal the design, fonts, music, language, style and everything but the substance of the folks that just won the job.It’s like any sport. You’ve been running and gunning for years, but come the championship game, the Democrat’s solid zone defense and full court press just ripped you to shreds. What do you do? You learn how to play zone.And so, we witness Richard Steele talking about a hip hop makeover – gotta get that youth vote…complete with Michelle Bachman shouting “You DA MAN!”(Sorry Michelle…the whole fuckin’ world knows who Da Man is, and it ain’t Richard Dickless Steele).They appropriate classic rock (Heart, Jackson Browne, Springsteen…who else?)…but all the artists tell them to stop fucking about and sue. McCain even went so far as to try to work Spanish rap into his energy pitch by praising a song called ‘Gasolina’…which is actually slang for semen. Oops.And they rip off the posters and buttons and every other thing they can, because in the absence of any idea what to become, they will try to pass themselves off “just like” the real thing…except, you know, better.You know. For the kids.This speaks to nothing so much as how deeply and profoundly they are doomed.They’re fucked.They’re doom fucked.Which explains, in half-baked evolutionary terms, why they opt for pure obstructionism. Unable to evolve, to adapt to the new environment, they need the environment to shift again…back into something that better suits their reptilian ethos. Helping the more evolved get things done is not going to improve the swamp, at all, from their perspective.
