Convenient Patriotism

Since the president announced his Afghanistan plan the other day, I’ve heard quite a bit of far-right undermining of the commander in chief while troops are in harms way. Just a reminder of what I thought was the rule about this behavior:

“The only ideas that they espouse are ways to undermine the troops in harm’s way and undermine their commander in chief while they’re at war. Your candidates have no idea how to keep this economy strong.”
—Sean Hannity, 10/18/06

“He’s the Commander-in-Chief. And what I find frankly repugnant about you and some of your fellow Democrats – you have undermined our president…”

—Sean Hannity, 03/19/06

“You know, Norman, those comments while we are at war, while troops are in harm’s way, while he is the commander in chief, do you not see the outrage in that?”

—Sean Hannity, 11/12/07

“I have had it with members of your party undermining our troops, undermining a commander in chief while we are at war…”

—Sean Hannity, 11/05

“You don’t criticize the Commander-in-Chief in the middle of a firefight. That could be construed as putting U.S. forces in jeopardy and undermining morale.”

—Bill O’Reilly, 04/04

“Can we do it without distorting their legacies and pandering to anti-American elites worldwide and using their deaths to embarrass and undermine our commander in chief?”

—Michelle Malkin, 11/23/05

“On the other hand, if Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat Congress are successful in undermining the commander-in-chief (thereby emboldening the terrorists to kill more Americans in Iraq)…”

—Tom DeLay, 04/11/07

“And furthermore, one of the fundamental principles we have in America is that the president is the commander in chief of the armed forces and attempts to undermine the commander in chief during time of war amounts to treason.”

—Pat Robertson, 12/07/05

Adding… For the record, I’m being ironical. Criticizing the president during wartime is fine. Hypocrisy, on the other hand, isn’t. You either unequivocally support the president in wartime or you don’t. You can’t have it both ways, wingnuts.

Bob– You just can’t get it, can you? You immoral, under-educated, anti American trash!

  • GItheJOE

Soldier Here! Not happy with more troops in Afghanistan or a longer timeline for withdraw from Iraq. Why do I hate America?C A Peterson,Go fuck yourself with your trolly hands.

In defense of Pat Robertson (I can’t believe I’m writing that), he denounced Rush Blimphole for stating that he hoped the president fails.Other than that, he remains an ass.

Wow, thanks a ton Bob. This is a great list and a perfectly straight forward and simple one to really show “Here are bold faced examples of people like Hannity and Oreily being full of shit.”

This is somewhat on-topic, and somewhat off-topic… but can we stop referring to being in iraq and afghanistan as a “time of war” or “war” period. They are occupations. Not wars. They are neo-colonialist occupations. If by “the war” people are referring to terrorism, then I suggest they find a new word because terrorism will always exist. Especially when it is proved so effective when used by politicians like Bush and Darth Cheney. Those two men are a shinning beacon to terrorists around the globe.

Are there examples of “far-right undermining of the commander in chief” Obama in 2009?

  • GeorgeJungle

GII thought C A Peterson was being facetious in his statement.

Dear God.Everyone of the individuals quoted were unmitigated scum. No grey areas. No grey matter.Pond’ll be good for them.

Oh if they are confronted with their hypocrisy, they’ll come up with some convoluted and contorted explanation of how they’re not really undermining or criticizing the President in a “time of war” (agree with you whole-heartedly J M). At the very least, they’ll just reiterate how the Democrats did it to George Bush, so now they should be able to do it to President Obama, who really is a centrist leftist marxist leninist communist islamofascist socialist that is sending more troops to Afghanistan because he’s realized that the Bush administration was right, but not about teleprompters, which Bush never used. For them it’s all about getting attention and ratings. They probably go home every night and forget most of what they said that day and start working on tomorrow’s script without even considering their previous statements.

Bob, you might be interested in this article from Newsweek:http://www.newsweek.com/id/141525It's a report on some neuroscience studies that present “strong evidence that moral hypocrisy requires a high-order cognitive process.” IOW, there is NO SUCH THING as an unconscious hypocrisy. They know EXACTLY what they’re doing.

We are now fucking around in Iraq and Afghanistan under a new president. Since the Repubes are anti everything Obama does, will they become the anti war party? This really is Bizarro world. Hannity in Birkenstocks, peace button and hemp clothing chanting “peace now!” Cool.

Ya know what really pisses me off? These chickenhawk mother fuckers and their “our commander in chief” bullshit.Idiots. The president is the C in C of the military, not the country. And I dunno about anyone else who has actually seen the inside of a recruiters office, but these fuckers offend me no end with their penchant for simultaneously lionizing and infantilizing the members of the military.
