Doof Quote of the Day

“I voted to take all earmarks out, but I will come back in the new process and put [Graham's $950,000 earmark] back in. I think I should have the ability as a United States senator to direct money back to my state as long as it’s transparent and it makes sense.”
—Senator Lindsey Graham talking himself in circles regarding a $950,000 earmark he requested

Shorter: “Everyone’s earmarks are stupid except mine.”

I think I should have the ability as a United States senator to direct money back to my state as long as it’s transparent and it makes sense…

… but the other 99 Senators can suck it.

Don’t think for a second these guys are stupid. They know what they are saying. They just don’t see the stupidity behind their logic. Their mindset does not allow them to see how irrational they are sounding. It is like Klingons trying to talk finance with the Vulcans. There is no logical way to understand what they are saying…

republicans are essentially saying:president obama enacted his strategy for afghanistan and iraq, closed guantanemo, passed the largest middle class tax cut in the history of tax cuts, passed a stimulus bill to create 3.5 million jobs, put forth a housing plan, set aside 643 billion dollars for health care reform, began engaging russia in an effort to deal with iran, and hes about to end the ban on stemcell research, all in about 50 days.but all those things suck.now, when’s he gonna get off his ass and do something about earmark reform like he promised?

The Republicanastycals have entered a new space: “The HyperHypocritical Wormhole”™This wormhole gives them the ability to reach deep into your pocket to rob you from anywhere in the universe. They used to have to be on Capital Hill to do so.

It’s just there usual brand of opposing things that mean nothing in the grand scheme of things but makes them look good in front of a camera bitching about. See also: “flag burning” and “English as the official language”.They have moved on to a different noisemaker. Last week it was “the evils of socialism.” This week it is “wasteful earmarks.” Is that change we can believe in, my friends? We were told things would be different. Blah blah blah pay attention to me blah blah blah invite me on your Sunday Roundtable of Fucking Losers blah blah fucking blah.Let’s start a pool on what they’ll be morally outraged at, strenuously objecting to and saving America from in the coming week.

Wasn’t that…the plan all along? Wasn’t Obama’s whole thing that earmarks are cool as long as they’re helpful and you tell people about them? Wasn’t that every response to McCain’s baiting during the campaign? Did I imagine all that??

I think the term earmark is used too often as a dirty word. In some cases it is a dirty word. For example, building a horse shoe museum in your home town that only sees about 50 visitors a year. If an earmark is used for some legitimate like fixing a highway or improving infrastructure then earmark is the wrong word.
