Firing Geithner

It’s hilarious that John Boehner and other Republicans are calling for the firing of Tim Geithner because of the AIG thing.

Question: was anyone in the Bush administration fired for failing to thwart the September 11 attacks? Not a single damn one.

Adding… Not necessarily defending Geithner. Just looking for consistency.

Come on Bob, I love reading your blog, but using dubya and his minions as a measuring stick to what our new President should do is just not fair, or right for that matter. We should take this moment to shine light on the trend of moving people from a monster industry to then monitoring that exact same industry…..we know this guy has friends, colleagues…etc. This needs to end or this country will never get out of the current rut we’re stuck in!

I’m not using the Bushies as a measuring stick. I’m exposing inconsistencies in the Republican Party. There’s a difference. And I’m no fan of Geithner or Summers, but it’s so damn early in the process. The jury is still out, and rightly so.

Indeed. If I remember, the Republicans were happy to back a one page plan to shovel out money with no stipulations whatsoever. Suddenly they’re apoplectic over bonuses that they would have fought tooth and nail for if Bush was still President.I’ve often thought about what you suggested, that none of the Bush administration resigned after 9/11. It’s because nothing is ever their fault. Katrina, 9/11, The Obama Recession/Depression, The Successful Failures in Iraq/Afghanistan. None of it was their fault, they were just there when it happened. I mean, stuff happens, right? Clinton didn’t protect us from 9/11, the people of New Orleans should have known to evacuate, Obama is causing this recession and failures in Iraq/Afghanistan, well, if only the Democrat congress had supported the President, we would have won the war sooner. It’s never their fault. I’m no fan of Geitner or Summers, but if they resign now, with Republicans and “centrist” Democrats calling for their ouster, it will lay the blame with the White House while ignoring the role Congress played in this whole fucking mess.

Hey, how about this for consistency? Boehner and the GOP is planning on voting against the taxation of the bonuses beng argued in the House right now. They’re taking the “Two wrongs don’t make a right” road and trying to draw attention on who took out the provision to limit executive bonuses.

HELP!OK, I have been punishing myself by listening to Mike Gallagher. He has been screaming into his microphone for the pass week about the abuse of power and taxpayer dollars of President Obama’s trip to Jay Leno. I quote, “Could you imagine the New York Times’ outrage if Bush did something like this during the economic crisis?” GDABers, I challenge all of you to find every single trip Bush took on Air Force One to Camp David, the Crawford Ranch or any other non working location that Bush hid at during the economic meltdown and sent if to Mike Gallagher. Or just post it here for my own amusement.

Nate Silver, once again, provides new insight on the AIG “bonuses”. You should definitely check it out. It provides a new perspective.

P.S.Who has the power to make rescind the “corporation is an individual” meme?

I must still be drunk from St. Patty’s. Sorry for all the grammar F-ups.

Even more ironic is how they bitch in one sentence that the Treasury isn’t staffed enough yet, that Geithner is there all alone. Now they want to get rid of the “only” guy there?I guess it makes sense if you are a Republican. Get rid of Geithner, block any future nominations and then tell the American people “well Obama didn’t even worry about staffing Treasury”. They would rather see us in a massive depression and win support in 2010 than see America recovering. Isn’t that the message from their leader Rush?

i dont recall any demanding of heads back in november or dec or jan once it became clear that the oversight for the TARP money was essentially nonexistent.

  • 24hourjack

…i guess thats because back then there was no reasonable way to pin the blame on dems, with bush and paulson still running shit.

While the money to AIG is not insignificant, I don’t remember anywhere near this amount of controversy over, for example $9 billion in cash among the funds that were unaccounted for in Iraq. Nor can I recall exactly who got fired for that. Oh right, Bremer got the medal of freedom.

Geithner has been the scapegoat since he has not done what the Wall Street bankers wanted him to do with the banking situation. When he was first nominated they loved him. When he went to Europe and laid out the same plan there with the G-7 leaders that he did here, it was no problem, they loved it. Yet, our media panned it, the republicans got on the air and said how terrible it was, the market tanked and that’s all you heard was how terrible it was. That’s when it all went to hell in an hand basket. The very day he released the bank bail out guide. The Wall Street bankers and the Stock Market bunch, wanted him to give them unlimited funds and more years of deregulation. Instead he told them they weren’t getting buckets of money and they were getting regulated. They didn’t like it and since then he has been villified in the press and by CNBC, and every Republican talking head out there.I have been saying since then he is getting a bum rap.. I still think he is.

even though i knew it was coming,im still super fucking pissed right now…okay,so the republicans have begun the outcry about pres. obama going to los angeles to appear on the tonight show.sen. kyle said something about how the pres. shouldnt be going on tv shows during this whole AIG bonus situation.first of all,im assuming that that issue will come up on the tonight show.but more importantly, lets go back and look at the quotes, lets see what kyle and other republicans had to say during hurricane katrina when bush was playing guitar with some country singer/eating cake w/john mccain/doing fly-overs.im sure they were all fucking outraged, huh?im sure kyle was especially critical of bush while bush was taking more vacation time than any president ever(and its not even close).in fact, wsnt bush on vacation when he got that memo about “bin laden determined to attack in u.s”?

I’m with Bob on this one, give the guy some time to work out what is on his plate. It will take time to fix this mess. The more changes to cabinet posts the more delay in implementation. The ‘pubs are looking for any wedge issue to show the President is not on his game. When they aren’t voting “No” they are planning and executing obstructions.

  • jjasonham

Keep Geithner. Let’s “finish what we started.” That seemed to be a good motto and justification for Republicans in ’04.

Some of you may have noticed this, but the GOPunks and their swine media cohorts are unable to defend each others antics if they’re too busy defending themselves individually.I tell you that we need to dig into who is protecting whom for what reason. I bet there’s a goddaned orgy – both figurative and, perhaps, literal in many cases – going on between the swine and prominent GOPunks or their sympathizers. Why are the GOPunks given such a large platform to whine about Pelosi, Reid, et al. on the various cable “news” outlets unabated? Why are the cable programs so invested in coaching the same people that thoroughly rejected the GOPunks into caring about the party’s “rising stars”?We need some investigative journalism up in this bitch, QUICK-LIKE!

GEITHNER & RANGEL TO BE SUBPOENAED IN TAX FRAUD CASEFederal Case Alleges Political Elite Get Favorable Tax Treatment Over Ordinary CitizensOn 5 March 2009 a Motion was filed in U.S. v. David Jacquot, Case # CR 08-1171, in the Federal District Court, in San Diego, California seeking to dismiss a false tax return indictment on the grounds that the Defendant was not treated in the same manner as politically prominent individuals. A hearing on this matter is set for 30 March 2009 in San Diego and the Defendant in this case intends to subpoena Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner, House Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel, former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, and others. The Defendant in this case is David Jacquot, an attorney and retired Army Officer. He is a decorated disabled Desert Storm veteran living in rural Idaho with his family. This “Geithner Motion” cites HR 735 titled the “Rangel Rule Act of 2009,” which if enacted, would eliminate penalties and interest for common citizens to allow them to be treated in the same manner as House Ways and Means Chairman Representative Charles Rangel. The Geithner Motion also quotes President Obama stressing the need to “treat common citizens in the same manner as politically prominent individuals in regards to tax matters”.The Geithner Motion details how Mr. Jacquot was vindictively indicted in retaliation for his successful defense of his clients against the IRS. The tax returns of his corporate law firm for the four (4) years of 2001 to 2004 were investigated and the government alleges that the law firm declared almost $200,000 TOO MUCH income during this time period. The Geithner Motion contains descriptions of numerous actions by the government and Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) Faith Devine that are the basis for the claim of retaliation against Mr. Jacquot for his zealous representation of his client’s Constitutional and statutory rights. The improper actions of AUSA Devine have been reported to the DOJ Office of Professional Responsibility for disciplinary action and are currently under review.A copy of the Geithner Motion and the complaint against AUSA Faith Devine can be downloaded at:www.jacquotlaw.com/vindictive-prosecution.html
