Morning Joe Has Stupid Graphs

Morning Joe has been displaying the DJIA graph since election day as a way of blaming the president for the down market. Scarborough to Stretch at around 8:25 a.m. EST:

SCARBOROUGH: We’ve been showing graphics of the Dow Jones just collapsing since Barack Obama’s election.

Yeah? So? Let’s pull wide and take a look at the market since its high water mark in September of 2007:

market_blame.jpg

President Obama’s light blue slice of the stock market is so narrow in relation to the previous (Republican) president that I couldn’t even fit the name “Obama” inside of the light blue area on the right. I was able to get O-B-A and half of an M.

Of course that’s kind of a joke, but it proves a point. If we’re going to blame the current president and his party for that little slice of blue, then we have to blame the previous president and his party for that gigantic block of red.

The difference, however, is that if the market has been sliding downhill for 18 months or so, how can the guy on that small sliver of blue on the right be expected to stop the slide — in a fraction of the time?

Or, as we often joke here: Why hasn’t Obama fixed the economy yet?

Adding… It looks like Joe Scarborough and Michelle Malkin are delivering the same ridiculous and easily-debunked talking points today.

The MSM just crapped their cages because of the poll that was 84% of Americans believe Obama inherited this economy. That number was way to high for them to comprehend so we are going to get weeks of Hannity/Drudge, “Obama is killing Wall Street” drum beat. Don’t worry, something shiny will distract the MSM in the next few days.

I think something they neglect to point out too is that this is world wide.. it is all the markets not just Wall Street. If you look at HongKong, Japan, England, all of them they have tanked too.. at least as much as ours has.. is that Pres. Obama’s fault too?? Is he supposed to fix them also??Why is that never pointed out??We are in a WORLD WIDE FINANCIAL CRUNCH…right??? lol

  • Christie

Bob, you’re by far my fave AM laugh after being utterly depressed by Morning Blow, however, I beg of you, please just summerize the Malkin shit and don’t send me there, now you’ve got to make me laugh again, I’m covered in hate.

  • Matt

Question…How long does the market have to slide before this arguement gets traction? Blaming him now has no grounding. The only thing I’m cautious about is even if by the end of his term, somehow the Bamster gets us back to say, the level he started with, will the deficit created be worth it? How many of the government jobs/recovery shovel ready jobs are temporary. Will they stay for years to come?Keep in mind by the end of FDR’s 2nd term and the New Deal, we had nearly the same amount of people unemployed, but the country nearly tripled it’s national debt. NRA was created, spent incredible amounts of money and declared unconstitutional. Maybe we need…a war…

  • Rush

What the graph fails to point out is that the market nose dived wgen BO won the elction…people bailed out for money market accounts.

  • Jeff

I certainly don’t blame Obama for the stock market but I don’t want him to have the same track record as Bush either. Bush was an awful president, of course the economy tanked on his watch. But is there anything Obama could do to slow the slide at this point? Probably not. In fact that’s exactly what the libertarians suggest. Don’t get involved, let things collapse naturally and then we’ll build it back up.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Gee Rush, you’re right! Let’s forget the first 40% of the dive was well, dipshit.

  • bjritz

It seems to me what we are seeing here is trickle down economics. When the selfish greedy baron bastards of wall street take their inflated share of potencial reinvestment off the top for self gratification only, the inevitable losses trickle down in the form of lower share value and lay offs.I’m looking for claw backs. This is a huge fraud perpetrated on the American invester and retirement system.PS. – Bob, does the new hosting service not provide spell check. I miss my usual amount of red lines for speling improbersly.

  • shasta

And here I was thinking that the “do no wrong” Democrats were put in charge of Congress back in 2006, over 2 years ago. Thanks for minimizing this unknown little detail.

Michelle Malkin.Christ…it’s enough to make me wanna write a book (TOTALLY fictional, of course) about a child born to immigrant parents who grew up in America with a strange last name and dark skin. The child, a bright girl, endured years of teasing and grew bitter, longing for anything resembling positive attention. She eventually attended a very liberal college where, much to her disappointment, there were far too many equally bright, equally pretty young girls for her to ever stand out from the crowd and get the attention she craved. Then it happened. One night, drunk and angry, she made some offhand remark about people of color. Her comment was misheard by those present, some of whom had been nursing their own rebellious feelings (and who hasn’t had those when surrounded by the smug self-assuredness of rich, liberal, ignorant crotch-spawn?)…Nevertheless, the misunderstood epithet resulted in something the desperate, young craver had never felt before – the light of positive attention. The very next day, mostly as an experiment, the budding young neocon engaged in an argument with one of her sociology professors. Amazing! Not only did this seem to anger the other pretty young girls, but her spunky, take-no-prisoners style seemed to catch the eye of some boys who sat quietly in the back. Before you could say Richard Milhous Nixon, the young sprite was being invited to participate in gatherings, meetings…even to write a “balance” piece for that damn left-wing student paper! The button-down crowd had never had much success attracting cute chicks…especially cute, sorta-minority chicks. They had only a very few Camilla Parker-Bowles looking harridans who refused to put out unless you presented them with notarized proof of the size of your trust fund.Job interviews followed…offers, opportunities, meetings…It never once occurred to our heroine that, like a punch drunk champ whose manager is hand picking no talent stumblebums, that her ensuing string of “victories” and climb up the ladder had far more to do with the fact that she was a chocolately bit of vicious sweetness who DIDN’T look like Camilla, than with her amazing footwork and vicious right hook.Eventually, she married an equally bright boy who was more than happy to stay at home and be her bitch while she waded into the world of pissing people off and being paid for it. Pointless, nonsensical yammering…who would ever have thought it could be a meal ticket. As the story draws to a close, our heroine is beginning to sense the truth…that she isn’t really very bright, and is commonly wrong about most things. But what, then, could be behind her meteoric rise to success…why do people heap all this attention on her?Sadly, full awareness will never be achieved by our lead character, for as she’s pondering these very questions she chokes to death on a slightly oversize bit of food, which is totally ironic because she fucking well TOLD her goddamn useless bitch of a husband to cut it up into BITE SIZED pieces!

@ ShastaGood reasoning, there. I can see how two years of a Dem congress can totally undo thirty years of Reaganomics and the hell bent Republican deregulation of the financial sector. All the way back to Silverado Savings & Loan (NEIL BUSH), The Keating scandal (John McCain), Enron…of course…how could I miss the greasy hands of the democrats all over the fucked up global financial collapse.Have another crazy pill. Your moron is getting out of balance with your imbecile.

  • JackDanieL

that Democratic Congress of 2006, though hardly anything to write home about, was still hamstrung by serving under what all evidence is now labeling as a DICTATORSHIP

  • http://cousinavi.wordpress.com cousinavi

@ ShastaHow many times and in how many threads are you going to post those cherry picked, no context stats?Poverty rate the same? Yeah…cuz the criteria was jiggered and rejiggered numerous times and in many ways…not least of which the nominating KETCHUP as a goddamn vegetable in order to make school lunches conform to nutrition guides. An increase in spending…unadjusted for inflation, and failing to note whether the GOP or Dems were responsible for that hell bent cranking up of spending. I think, if you take a peek, you will find that the GWB administration presided over the the greatest increase in debt in American history, and THAT despite cooking the books to hide their most egregious waste and fuckwittery. You toss around these numbers…fuck you cling to these numbers…as if they MEAN anything beyond that it comforts you to be able to copy and paste them rather than actually make an argument based on premise and principle.Fuck off somewhere, kid. Your weak bullshit bothers me.

  • Francis Zuccarello

I think that’s called gallows humor.

  • colaborate

The numbers speak for themselves. They illustriously display that your minds are full of ignorance, and go on daily ape-shit tirades without realizing what the fuck has been happening. It’s called “willful negligence”.The numbers are valid, I provided the inflation adjustment factor, you need it broken down more for you? Ok, next time I’ll dumb it down. Will that help, I’ll wager you’ll still be pissing and moaning “it’s not enough”.I like to smear poop in my hair.

““I have a theory that if the economy keeps tanking, the middle is going to get a lot more capitalist and get very angry.” Chris Matthews. These people, Matthews, Scarborough, Santelli, Kudlow, et al, are scumbags. An eighteen month long slide in the Dow and Obama MUST stop it immediately. And then to plant this meme which says that this fearful middle will rush to embrace yet again the policies that brought them and everyone else to this point- that’s disgusting.Philosophically speaking, I’m all for letting each of these over-valued, toxic institutions fail. Nothing would please me more than to see the richly fed blood of bankers and their shareholders flowing in the streets: Philosophically speaking. Obama understands that that is precisely what Hoover did: he let them fail. The result: 25% unemployment, for one. If Obama were to let these banks go under, this economy, would resemble something from the imagination of Cormac McCarthy.

Sigh.Negligence is not commonly modified by the adjective willful.Blindness, however, is.There are typically three forms of negligence: misfeasance (doing wrongly that which ought to have been done correctly), nonfeasance (failing to do that which ought to have been done), and malfeasance (intentionally failing to perform / performing incorrectly that which one had a duty to do).In particularly egregious cases, such as your posts, one could very well argue for all three, in which case the term “negligent” would be modified by the adjective “gross”, as: “Your posts are grossly negligent.”As for being willfully blind, it would seem that runs right up your alley as well. And just to save you the embarrassment of further public displays of your stubborn ignorance (although you do seem to thrive on it), I shall explain the concept to you with an example.Let’s say your Panamanian whore mother asks you to drive a car back to Los Angeles and deliver it to her coked-out criminal husband (otherwise known as your Dad).As you approach the border, it never occurs to you that there might be a shitload of drugs, chopped up dead bodies and used condoms in the trunk. In this situation, when the Border Patrol finds that grisly shit, YOU have committed no crime. While you did commit the actus reas (the guilty act), you lacked the necessary mens rea (guilty mind). However, IF as you approach the border, you think to yourself, “Jeez…Mom is a really dirty Panamanian whore…there could be some bad shit in the trunk,” BUT you decide you just don’t want to know, you have committed a crime. Choosing to be willfully blind to the true state of affairs is no defense.Of course, in YOUR case, you’d start quoting stats and insisting that you have rights, make a complete arse of yourself, and they’d fucking toss you in the shitter for life. So it goes when one is both willfully blind AND grossly negligent.Best of luck with that legal English course your flunking.

  • Kat

    Bisous, Avi.

  • stunned

Hey thanks for the grammar lesson fuck-tard.It further illustrats your will-full negligence.

  • http://cousinavi.wordpress.com cousinavi

…As opposed to the rest of my negligence, which is accidental.Fucktard = What happened to your Panamanian mama immediately before she handed you the car keys. You say it right, but you spell it wrong. And, just to be clear, it wasn’t a grammar lesson (though you could brush up on that, too). It was more of an “If you’re going to use words you don’t understand in a vain attempt to lend credibility to otherwise pathetically weak, nonsensical arguments, allow me to instruct you on the meanings of those words” lesson. You’re like the guy who committed suicide when he discovered that the word HIRSUTE was not a synonym for NEVERTHELESS.Although, please…don’t wait for the full depth and breadth of your ignorance to dawn on you. No time like the present, eh?

  • Alan4s

Damn! I love a lunch-time smack down! Goes well with my burrito (well, except the chopped up dead bodies and used condoms part).Good job avi!

  • GammaDeltatBeta

Divide the 2005 numerical costs by 7, you pseudo-intellectual twit.

  • http://www.thenewwearsoff.com Tom Fresca

i agree with you stunned, and i like your fruitful apathy. if i can pontificate on the subject monetarily, the willful negligence of the nocturnal commissions have opened my mucus membrane to a whole world of splendiferous onomatopoeia. Your retortation?

  • Alan4s

Regardless of what one divides them by, or why, the numbers are still pointless without context. Really, what point are you trying to make that’s relevant to this post?

  • http://cousinavi.wordpress.com cousinavi

@ AlanAm just about to pop my take-away quesadillas into the toaster oven. I have my salsa and my sour cream ready to go.At least, they were ready to go…until you drew my attention to my own post. Now I’ve sorta lost my appetite. Please…next time, leave me my willful blindness. That was ever so grossly negligent of you.I really must start being nicer to people. It’s beginning to affect ME.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Those are awesome numbers, shasta.I have a question now (don’t worry about the legality of the issue): Say you are 40 years old and in love with a girl who is 10. You are 4 times as old as she is. So you decide to wait for her. 5 years later, you’re 45 and she’s 15. Now you’re only 3 times as old as she is. So you wait some more. Another 15 years passes. Now you’re 60 and she’s 30, you’re only twice as old.How long do you have to wait before you are the same age as the girl?

  • http://cousinavi.wordpress.com cousinavi

@ Broadway CarlI want you to lend me twenty dollars. I know you only have ten, but that’s ok…just give me the ten and you can owe me ten. And, before you ask, NO…I don’t want to buy a baseball team and I don’t care who plays second.(lobs it gently back over the net)
