First time post… I’m a huge fan though! Here goes…

My theory on the AIG Bonuses and the ARRA Language regarding compensation (the MSM would never come up with something like this)-

I am basically assuming that at some level, Treasury was aware that these bonuses would happen, and the Senate also had its suspicions. When they passed the ARRA
Dodd presented his amendment because he was genuinely angry at the corporate greed, and is somewhat progressive. However, the Treasury begged for the language to be changed.

Why?

If you believe Liddy’s testimony that the executives in charge of winding down the various deal books are literally holding us hostage, then you have to assume they had this power when the debate over ARRA was happening. The Treasury knew that they would demand their bonuses, or threaten to walk out on us, creating a chance of default involving an account from their relevant deal books, thereby throwing the Company into bankruptcy (The Apocalypse).

So if the amendment had been included, and Treasury would still have had to pay the bonuses, would the people be any less angry? No… except in that scenario, there would be no excuses that our hands are “legally bound,” causing the public to direct its anger towards the Treasury, and therefore the Administration.

I think it was a tactically brilliant move (I hope the President was involved)… I just hope the end game involves said executives handing over their responsibilities seamlessly and then going straight to jail. That sounds way too good for reality though.

I could be wrong.The people getting the retention bonuses are people that could not afford to be lost until the stuff they knew inside and out was wound down.Retention bonuses are only given to key employees that, if they left, you would be fucked. Non key employees are never given retention bonuses. These people are always better off if they jump ship early (at the first sign of sinking). The retention bonus is a bribe to stay and help with the bailing out so that maybe you won’t sink.No one is irreplaceable, given time. People can be hired to replace people, but if it takes then a year to get up to speed, then you are screwed.I think that paying the retention bonuses was the right thing to do. If we don’t care at all about what happens to AIG, then paying them was bad.I’m not sure that many people understand what retention bonuses are for. I have received two retention bonuses in my life, both when facilities were being closed. They wanted me to stay until the doors were locked for the last time so they offered a retention bonus. Both times they were right in giving them because I would have jumped ship immediately without the bonus and they knew it.As you can see, retention bonuses are only given out in times of dire circumstances. The people at AIG knew the ship was sinking and they wanted to jump ship and get a job somewhere else. Those people would have all left by May 2008 if the retention bonuses hadn’t been handed out in Jan 2008.The media has turned this into a circus and given little explanation. The Congresscritters only made it worse today.I do not normally defend these assholes, but this was the wrong battle.

TS: I read that Obama was in on the deal to strip the no-bonus clause. I read too that despite the clause, Geithner was trying to woo the various execs into NOT paying bonuses. And he said today… he’s the president – the buck stops with him (our last president certainly shared the sentiment, but no force of will would let him admit it when it really mattered).
