Way Too Much

by Lee Stranahan

More bad news…

Obama said the food safety system is too spread out, making it difficult to share information and solve problems.

He also blamed recent underfunding and understaffing at FDA that has left the agency unable to conduct annual inspections of more than a fraction of the 150,000 food processing plants and warehouses in the country.

I know what you’re thinking – President Obama is doing way too much. The guy is like Castro, wanting to socialize America’s food. Here comes another pork program and this time some of it is literally about pork. Karl Marx would have loved this plan to hire more government workers.

Okay, everyone – it’s time to Go Galt! We all need to stop eating.

Why can’t these socialists understand that people are *supposed* to die from salmonella contaminated food? How are the officers of the food corps going to afford their fourth houses in places like West Palm Beach and the Hamptons if they have to spend inordinate amounts of money on making sure that the food products they distribute are healthy and free of bacterial and chemical contamination? Geeze people, it’s not like salmonella tastes bad.Would you like some peanuts? We just swept them off of the hog feces, but not to worry, we hosed them off before we packaged them.Enforcing food safety regulations should have a much higher priority than enforcing drug possession laws. I wonder how these priorities got so confused.Compare and contrast the budget of the FDA for food safety and purity regulation enforcement with the budget of just the DEA. Enforcing unconstitutional laws against individual citizens is apparently a much higher priority than protecting those same citizens from being poisoned by corporations.Any change to correct this asinine priority imbalance is a good thing.GObama!

What absolutely perplexes me is the thought that this absolutely idiotic meme caught traction with the mainstream media (who are no doubt protecting their own interests). Do we want the president to focus on 1 issue to the detriment of all others?!?It’s an asinine talking point. The whole point of running the country is being able to effectively multi-task all of the nation’s affair. Otherwise, we’d need a president of the economy, a president for healthcare, a president for security, etc. If that sounds stupid, so does the prospect of having a singularly focused president. We had that for 8 years. Look where it got us.

Good point, Shonda. It’s not like the man doesn’t have staff.Tonight on Hardball: Is our new President…too effective? Chris Matthews’s constantly working jaw explains why the president shouldn’t do all this stuff all at once: it makes it difficult to craft an effective media narrative.

The FDA is one of the “social” programs Bush deregulated and, besides defunding and cutting back on personel appointed one of his unqualified buddies to run it, as he did almost everywhere on home soil. Too much government, you know. I think we know now that we need to gov’t oversight in our food industry and not just huge tax breaks for corporate production with no oversight.
