Ass Troturfing

The last time we saw Stephen Moore of the Wall Street Journal, he was participating in Glenn Beck’s insane “War Room” episode during which he helped to game out Beck’s paranoid delusions. And the next day, Colbert discredited the whole ridiculous event — right in front of Moore’s smirky face.

Somehow being a laughing stock on both FOX News and Comedy Central hasn’t prevented Moore from appearing on Hardball where he lied about the tea bag parties:

This really isn’t something that’s being driven, a) by the Republican Party, or b) by the national conservative groups. You gotta give credit where credit is due on this Chris, it really is a genuine kind of grassroots thing that kind of just spontaneously combusted around the country.

Lies. FOX News Channel, which could be considered a national conservative group, is promoting the tea baggers. FreedomWorks, a national conservative lobby, is funding the tea baggers. Fine — whatever floats their boat. But don’t say it’s grassroots when it’s clearly astroturfing of the highest order.

Yeah, any protest with lavish financial backing can only be a fakeroots sham, not the genuine “grassroots” protests that are organized and funded extravagantly by ACT, MoveOn, ANSWER, etc.-A

  • Lexaburn

Why do these tea bag parties resemble hippie rallies? There’s something oddly similar about the two phenomenons. Why are Republicons always offering low-grade versions of..well, everything?Low grade holy-rolling, low-grade war mongering, low-grade Nazi babble, low-grade political posturing, low-grade presidents, low grade political party, etc…These things are all applicable to the Republicons in every way.Let them pretend to be angry at their little pic-a-nic on Wednesday. The only thing coming from the GOPunks that isn’t low-grade is their quality of dumbass. Oh, and their bullshit is very high grade.

  • http://www.osborneink.com Matt Osborne

Atanarjuat,I realize that I’m wasting fingertips replying, but you can’t possibly compare a spontaneous netroots movement like MoveOn.org to FreedomWorks. Not unless you believe that Dick Armey and Steve Forbes using money from Koch, Scaife, Bradley, Olin, and Exxon-Mobil amounts to “grassroots.” That is, not unless you change the meaning of “grassroots” to “artificial grass.”http://mediatransparency.org/recipientgrants.php?recipientID=395″If you want my respect for your opinion, then have a respectable opinion.”

  • D. C.

It looks low-grade because they’re trying to fabricate something that was a legitimate grass roots movement. It’s like those fake uprisings to stop the Florida recounts. The GOP can only imitate. They cannot innovate.

  • IC

Topic for your next HuffPo column, Bob? Which is due to pop on the big day itself, the 15th, if I’m not mistaken. It truly can’t be emphasized enough how faux, faux, faux grass rootsy this whole farce is.”FreedomWorks is the result of a 2004 merger between Citizens for a Sound Economy (a conservative think tank with strong ties to major corporations like General Electric and General Motors) and Empower America (an organization that lobbied for tax reform, Social Security reform, etc.) …Before the merger, Citizens for a Sound Economy boasted a long history of Astroturf lobbying. Slate Magazine reported in 2003 that the majority of the organization’s funding came from corporations or corporate-backed conservative foundations and that the group was mostly an “extension of Armey’s lobbying work [at Piper Rudnick, a D.C. law firm].”Post-merger, the Astroturf lobbying continues. FreedomWorks has accepted corporate contributions from telephone giants Verizon and SBC (now AT&T).”FreedomWorks

If Moore ain’t the spitting image of Brainy Smurf without the blue skin, no one is.Someone needs to put a white mushroom hat on his head and toss him OUT of the village when he opens his mouth to speak.

  • Lexaburn

I might add that even Moore’s voice has that nasally, Brainy Smurf quality to it.Picture Moore saying “Papa Smurf says…” when you hear his voice.

  • Atanarjuat

    Matt Osborne said:

you can’t possibly compare a spontaneous netroots movement like MoveOn.org to FreedomWorks.

Indeed, Mr. Osborne, a well-oiled and well-connected liberal partisan machine like MoveOn cannot compare to any of the organizations that are uniting in support of the Tea Party protests. You wrote that you’re “wasting fingertips replying,” and perhaps you should have stopped right there. Instead, you responded with the typical leftist smear that’s slathered on any group that has the audacity to back any political issues that liberals are opposed to.What a surprise! However, I do appreciate the reply, despite the fact that my response can only be, NO SALE.In less than two days, the Tea Party phenomenon will occur and the national exposure it will receive will inarguably increase its popularity; more and more Americans, outraged at the direction this country has taken under Obama, will subsequently join the protests in ever-increasing numbers.Little wonder that the hard-left partisans on this blog and numerous other liberal sites are desperately trying to marginalize the significance and impact of the upcoming protests, as it will make running interference for President Obama that much harder for his slavishly loyal supporters. And that just won’t do.-A

A-You completely changed the subject when you were confronted with facts proving your initial point to be bullshit. The very fact you say that MoveOn can’t compete with something like FreedomWorks gives justification to Matt’s point. Of COURSE MoveOn can’t compete. It is a netroots organization, unlike FREEDOMWORKS, which is the EXACT OPPOSITE.This is such a typical conservative counter: lie, and when you get called on that lie, flaunt some dumb fact that makes it seem like your cause is somehow fundamentally better than the one you were initially mocking. It’s like when O’Reily counters someone calling him a sexist/stalker/all-around-crazy by talking about how high his ratings are as if that shit justifies him.And given the fact that everyone on cable news has been shitting their shorts over the teabaggery, I seriously doubt that there is anyone who could possibly be interested that hasn’t heard about it already. Tax day is just going to give those that don’t know/don’t care enough to have already done their homework a chance to see some of the hateful wackjobs that get to mug for the camera. So I don’t necessarily think this will actually do any good for your “cause”, quite the opposite. I think when these (you) idiots get your day in the sun to shout your loudest of loud noises into the tv machine, you’re going to find that the majority of those that see you for the first time might just be scared shitless.

  • jenski42

A -Where were you and the rest of the teabaggers during TARP? Where were the protests when Bush was on a spending spree? I honestly want to know. Intellectual honesty, please.

  • mmortal03

“But don’t say it’s grassroots when it’s clearly astroturfing of the highest order.”Can’t it be both?

  • Lexaburn

Firstly, I like how this “A” bonehead exalts the “organizations” behind the “Tea Parties,” not because of how effective they are, but because of how many flies they attract to their shit.Look, this idiot is here to attack “liberals” and their causes, people. He knows that “liberals” will, perhaps, defend MoveOn and those left-leaning organizations. He does this in order to deviate from the crux of the matter: these “Tea Parties” are corporate-sponsored con-servative shams that offer no purpose other than placating a bunch of sore loser Republicons. This “A” dumbdumb seems to believe that we all ought to be impressed with weirdos with nothing better to do than attend phony Republicon field trips in reaction to being rendered irrelevant.Hey, moron, we know that bitter, dumbassed Republicons are legion, so we’re not impressed when they show up in great numbers to revel in make-believe. As if we hadn’t observed three quarters of these dorks actually voting for the insurmountably asinine ticket of McCain/Palin just last year. McCain is a low-grade “maverick,” and Palin was a low-grade Hillary Clinton.Again, these “tea parties” are yet another low-grade offering from the con-servatives. They are the Republicons attempt to compete with those crowds Obama was attracting throughout the campaign, for starters. That’s revealed within all their discussions on these matters concerning the “tea party protests.” But they’re also in response to all those supposedly “anti-Bush” protests they observed throughout the “War on Terror”.

  • sgp

well lexaburn,I guess that leaves your ppl with the honor of High grade holy rolling..high grade war mongering..high grade lenin babble..high grade political posturing..High on pot presidents and a high test about to explode political party…think I’ll stick to my own crowd. You are really funny..thanks for the laugh.

  • jenski42

No answer. He runs, just like his screen name suggests. Expected. I’ll go back to trying to engage real conservatives, not whiny tantrum throwers.

  • Atanarjuat

“No answer?”Sorry, jenski, I don’t have the luxury of spending the entire day cruising blogs. It must be nice to be on the dole like you are and to be able dedicate your towering intellect to battling your ideological foes online. Clearly, you and LexaBumBurn are dedicated keyboard warriors without peer, and I’d do best to steer clear of your ferocious, partisan righteousness.*chuckle*Meanwhile, I see that I flummoxed some of you by making the undeniable comparisons between affluent, leftist organizations and those patriotic institutions that will be actively supporting the American Tea Parties tomorrow, April 15th.You liberals can grind your hands against your ears as hard as you wish and yell “lalalala!” as loud as you’re able, but it won’t stop the message of the Tea Parties from being amplified and understood by Americans who are concerned about the recklessness of the Obama administration. In short, you liberals are on the wrong side of history. The inexorable backlash against nosebleed-high taxation and government-coerced wealth redistribution cannot be stopped with your low-brow, juvenile bouts of ridicule and scorn.-A

  • http://www.thenewwearsoff.com Kyle

You’re right, A, we all know that conservatives always come out on the right side of history. Wait, I think I meant NEVER. Have fun getting tea-bagged!

  • Steve

“…concerned about the recklessness of the Obama administration.”A – seriously, nice talking point, but where are the facts? Angry about the “direction” the country has taken? In two months? This is so manufactured – besides a Koch-influenced org. buying the teabag domain name – and yet NOBODY from your crowd stood up to protest the national debt skyrocketing under B/C, unemployment increasing, Haliburton and Enron ripping the country off continuously, budget tricks and need I mention a manufactured war? NOW, there’s “outrage,” whipped up by Fox and the like? I mean, talk about pawns.I’d like to see ONE person have a poster tomorrow saying that we should have no more corporate welfare, wages should increase, there should be more financial regulation.Instead we get a bunch of confused “protesters” wailing about whatever the latest “-ism” is (Islamo-facism is SO 2006-2008, obviously THAT one didn’t work), suddenly the right are strict constitutionalists…that’s laughable…goaded by Beck, who truly is a great PERFORMER. But that’s it.And Obama wants to raise the marginal tax rate to a point where it will still be 10% lower than under Reagan. Ooooo…the HORRORS!I got my tax cut and I’ve doubled my money on GE stock the last 6 weeks. And we’re not the laughing stock overseas. So far, I’m happy with the “direction.”

  • jenski42

Yet, for having “no time” you responded with a comment that was three times as long as it needed to be:1.) I did protest TARP, as well. (As some libertarians did, and I respect them for their consistency.)(or)2.)I am a hypocrite.See how easy that was?*chuckle* I wrote that last night after I got home from my SECOND job. It must be nice to make gobs of money like you, and have nothing better to do than troll around on blogs and spout mindless talking points instead of answering a clear, direct question.Ta- ta.

  • Silly Ratfaced Git

mmortal03 -Regarding your question about why can’t it be both? The quick and ill considerred answer is that it can be both grassroots and astroturf.A better thoughtful answer requires explanation.I fully believe that there are many participants that fully and honestly believe that they are participating in a real grassroots effort. I have no desire to ridicule these people because I see no reason to not take them at their word. That said, I have no doubt that they have been duped into thinking that they are part of a spontaneous uprising and are really being used as pawns to justify the Grand Obstructionist Party’s current agenda of NO! These Tea Tantrums are nothing more than a canard that the Rushpublics will point to and say “See! Look at that! Our constituents want us to derail all of Obama’s agenda.” They don’t really care about what the protesters think they are protesting. That’s why the Tea Tantrum agenda has been fluid and nebulous. The only real object of the Tea Tantrums is “Down with the socialist, fascist Nigger.” The N word is never mention in the organizational material but racial coding is present. We only have to wait until Thursday or Friday to see them start proclaiming that they are following the (totally manufactured) wishes of their constituents. The Rushpublics need these tea tantrums to justify their outrageous behavior. They spent us into a gaping abyss and allowed virtually all manufacturing jobs to be shipped overseas. They shot thousands of Halliburton, KBR, and Enron torpedoes into our economy and demand that we continue this behavior. They have offered no credible alternatives to Obama’ agenda. There is no evidence to support the assertion that they can muster an original thought on any topic. All they have offered as a fix for the economy is the same list of defective policies that put us into this badly broken economy in the first place. The failure to adapt policies to changing conditions is what makes them ideologues (and dangerous ones at that).Oversimplified illustratoin: It hurts when I pound my head against this wall. Obama suggests that I stop pounding my head against the wall, while the rushpublics insist I keep pounding and it will stop hurting Real Soon Now. Yeah, whatever.Evidence that the tea tantrums are an Astroturf campaign are all over the web now. Think Progress has an excellent article with supporting evidence.I’ll summarize the pertinent facts.

    1. The tea party domain names were registered last summer shortly after the RNC in August.
    2. The tea party websites appeared the day following Santelli’s scripted rant with full content already present all with similar appearence, highly coordinated similar content, and all running identical web stacks (Same OS/WebServer/content engines). If this were a real netroots effort, then it is a certainty that the look, feel, content, OS, Web Stack, etc. would not be so identical or nearly identical. The tea party suggested protest signs list is identical at all of the tea party websites.
    3. The majority of signs seen at the tea tantrums are either identically from the sign suggestion list at the tea party websites or slight variations.
    4. The terms “Tea Party,” “Teabag,” “teabagging,” and “teabagger” were selected long before anyone heard about a “grassroots uprising.”

I have no desire to dissaude anyone from exercising their right to lawful protest. I would suggest that people wanting to protest do their own organizing. If you participate in the Tea Tantrums, it will not be your message that the media cartel uses since they don’t care one iota about your message. They already have the script that they will read on Wednesday provided by the highly paid Dick Armey lead propagandists at Freedom Works (another fascist Oxymoron). They are waiting only for the video of the pawns for their chroma-key matte. If you don’t mind being corporatist pawns, then never mind. Carry on.

    jenski42 blathered:

Yet, for having “no time” you responded with a comment that was three times as long as it needed to be:

jenski, you vestigial-brained simian, you crowed that I had “no answer.” I simply explained to you that I don’t spend all my time cruising blogs like you evidently do, which is why my eventual response (see above) was not posted at the knee jerk pace you’re accustomed to. If you’re still confused, then get your local community organizer to explain it to you.As far as being “three times as long as it needed to be,” I see that you expect everyone to accommodate your Liberal Attention Deficit Disorder (LADD). Sorry, old bean, but I’ll use as many or as little words as I desire, irrespective of your own inability to follow along. All that being said, you did let slip one bit of honesty that I can certainly agree with:”I am a hypocrite”Indeed you are, dear boy. Indeed you are. It’s barkingly obvious that you expect conservatives to hold protests without the benefit of resources or funds so as to be genuinely grassroots, but you turn a conveniently blind eye to leftist sugar daddies like MoveOn, ACT, and ANSWER, to name a few, when it comes to financing America-bashing liberal protests. You’re a real piece of work, that’s for sure.-A

  • Alex

And the idiot busts out his thesaurus and STILL doesn’t give an answer……

  • IC

    Atanarjuat deflected once again:

…leftist sugar daddies like MoveOn, ACT, and ANSWER…

So, who are the corporate backers of these coalitions, A?

  • Lexaburn

I guess that leaves your ppl with the honor of High grade holy rolling..high grade war mongering..high grade lenin babble..high grade political posturing..High on pot presidents and a high test about to explode political party…Wow, I actually got a retort from a dingbat…I bet it made the twit that composed that retort directed at me feel all tingly. It would have made much more of an impact if it hadn’t regurgitated half of what I wrote, fucked up all the precious nuance I went through pains to include, then to cap it all off, the moron decided to think up his own insult, but I’ll be damned if I understand what the fuck the insult is pertaining to.I’ll give it a shot, though.I believe the dork was referring to President Obama admitting while on the campaign trail to taking a toke or two in his youth. This admission would only be relevant to those looking to ttack Obama politically. The taboo is no longer there, and as such, I do not have to defend President Obama it. Meanwhile, Bush 43 has yet to explain whether he was both high and drunk with Wall St. during the eight years he was PotUS. People demand an explanation, sgp-person. You go find Bush 43 and ask him. Get the fuck outta here, dope, you’re boring me.Hold on…It’s much too bad the con-servative imbeciles couldn’t use Obama’s past drug use against him, instead having to settle on attacking the fact that he was a popular figure. Actual smart people would not have been able to attack Obama on those grounds, what made the conservatwits believe that they could? In reference to the “high test about to explode political party,” I believe even you don’t know what the hell you were referring to here. Were YOU, in fact, high when you authored that bit, sgp-person?And never mind your snide compliments to my being funny. I’ll just inform you that you’re neither smart nor funny and leave it at that.If or when you read this composition, understand that Lexaburn is not a “liberal Democrat,” so stow your ad hominems next time, ok.
