Blowback

Glenn Greenwald on the Malkin outrage:

When you cheer on a Surveillance State, you have no grounds to complain when it turns its eyes on you. If you create a massive and wildly empowered domestic surveillance apparatus, it’s going to monitor and investigate domestic political activity. That’s its nature. [...]

As the National Review/Bush-following-Right has been telling us for years now, there’s nothing to worry about if you’ve done nothing wrong and have nothing to hide.

Brilliant. Plus, Greenwald brings us a bonus Jonah Goldberg fail. Go look at UPDATE II.

Wasn’t the question asked many time of these idiots “How would you feel if these powers were in the hands of a liberal Democratic administration? In the hands of – heaven forfend! – Hillary Clinton?”For all our efforts to stop the surveillance state being set up by Bush/Cheney, we were called un-American, we were told we wanted America to fail, and we were told we were siding with the terrorists.Hey Malkin: Watch what you type. Watch what you say. Watch who you associate with. I want you to be scared of what you have wrought, what you have championed all this time. Terrified.Nothing will happen to you, of course, but I want to believe that, somewhere, you are piss-in-your-pants scared of the monster you helped create.

you know Nano, if they have done nothing, they shouldn’t worry, remember that one?thanks for posting this Bob, I read it earlier and laughed and laughed at the irony

Though I must admit, my only disappointment with Obama thus far is that he hasn’t done more to roll back the surveillance-state apparatus, the ironic turn-of-events reminds me of conversations I had with conservatives in the past (when I … gulp … was one) about banning flag burning. I repeatedly argued that, by allowing the government to ban avenues of expression, all they would be doing is handing the government a gun that would eventually be pointed back at them.Their response was basically the equivalent of a Lee Greenwood song.

Huh, I guess the local Raging Grannies are not the domestic threat I thought they were.

I think I’ve discovered the their logic, veralynn:Brown guy praying on a plane = potential terroristWhite Guy Buying Guns & Saying “Obama’s breathing borrowed air” = Patriot that’s only being monitored ’cause he’s not a Socialist Democrat and made fun of by the Liberal MediaI sure hope these hoople mutherfuckers aren’t breeding. I’m tired of my tax dollars being constantly redistributed to monitor their crazy.

Nano-they are breeding. I work with them. They find me “amusing”. It really is a shame they can’t hear my thoughts sometimes.

Two concepts conservatives truly cannot seem to understand: irony and blowback. .

@ The ColonelI take your point at Obama’s not rolling back the domestic surveillance apparatus. And yet, at just this moment, it would seem to be of something approaching good use, what with the extreme wingnut revolution amping up to new daily peaks of crazy.I think there’s something like sweet irony in the machine the GOP built on lies being turned into something that actually manages to stop harm.

  • Silly Ratfaced Git

Whenever I heard the incredibly ignorant “If you’ve done nothing wrong Then you have nothing to hide” I have always replied with the following:Since you have nothing to hide then give me your full legal name, your social security number, your mother’s maiden name, your birth date, and the routing and account numbers of all your bank accounts. This usually causes them to rethink their position on information privacy.

Loved this line from the end of Glenn’s piece laying out the rethuglicans perfectly.‘they’re as fact-free as they are unprincipled, hypocritical and self-pitying.’

  • jenski42

As Greenwald says, the best comment is:”When they have a club in their hands, no one is more sadistic. When the club is removed, no one is more whiney.”More hypocrisy. Right on.

Nothing helps to grow a movement like a lil’ persecution.. Keep up the good work!

I’m still waiting for Obama and congress to roll back surveilance legislation too but the sad thing is, once you sacrifice freedoms you rarely get them back.
