Fiction and Reality

Glenn Reynolds and the rest of wingnuttia are crapping their cages over the liberal reaction to the Pittsburgh shooting. In one of his updates, Reynolds posts an e-mail response to Oliver Willis’ reaction to the shooting:

Oliver Willis is for banning violent video games, presumably. And I’m sure he thinks the Beatles should’ve been locked up along with Charles Manson. Just kidding, that would only be if he actually had principles and wasn’t just trying to score cheap political points from the murder of police officers.

So Glenn Beck, Michele Bachmann and the others are like fictional CG cartoon characters in a pretend video game world? I knew it!

Seriously, there’s a huge difference between mental patients or impressionable children mistaking fiction for reality, and adults with fixed ideologies and loaded guns acting upon calls for revolution from real-life elected officials and news network commentators. Huge difference.

The fact that Reynolds and this e-mailer can’t see the difference proves they might be unable to distinguish between fiction and reality. If that’s the case, they don’t qualify for gun ownership.

Don’t stop, brother!Keep up the traffic on this point. Beck must be stopped now. I was saying, “before someone gets hurt” but it is too late.

  • hielo

Yeah. Right. So keep it up.But the gun freaks will always be here. They are pretty stressed right now. Things are not going well for the system of paranoia that they take so much comfort in.

  • GItheJOE

heilo,This is exactly what they want. The start the “Boston Massacre” and then they get to form Militia and march on Washington/San Francisco. But that is were I come in. Please for the love of all things Holy let them secede or perform acts of treason.

  • hielo

GItheJOEWhat are you saying here? I am trying…. but I don’t get it.”Please for the love of all things Holy let them secede or perform acts of treason.”Are you O.K?

Selfservatives. Defending the indefensible since–well, forever.

  • GItheJOE

hielo,My screen name should spell out my occupation. I have sworn an Oath to defend the Constitution from all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC. The reactionaries would be DOMESTIC terrorists. In no way do I want more innocent blood shed. However, if they want to fight the rule of law than there are organizations set up to stop them.

  • GItheJOE

Yes, I am OK.I am just sick of the paradigm that the liberal community/leadership will just sit back and let an armed revolution of pig farmers kill everyone that doesn’t agree with their ideology. These people are NO DIFFERENT than Jihadists.

  • GItheJOE

Further clarification,All I want is for the Blogotubes to bring notice to this cancer of society until it gains political attention and our leaders do or say something about it. I am not trying to organize a Liberal Militia to fight the Reich Wing Militia. Believe it or not, I am a man of peace and that is what this is all about. The reactionaries aren’t engaging in peaceful protest and will not be talked down of the ledge. Action or words are needed.

JoeThanks for the explanation. You have chosen a lifestyle that demands a defense of the U.S…. internal or international. Thank you. I am proud to be your fellow citizen.Do you really think that the wackos pose a serious threat? Yeah, I know about the crazy killing sprees. It makes me sick. But I can’t get a grip on the concept of insurrection.I live in Mexico now. No guns allowed! Of course the narcos buy them in the U.S.and kill…kill…kill.Still, the violence here is so limited geographically that no one pays much attention to it in day-to-day stuff.Hang in there dude. And thanks again.

    Signing out for now.

One conservative comeback to this is that there are more Democrats in jail than Republicans. They’re implying that being a Democrat influences one to commit crimes. But Democrats aren’t the types to suggest that people should arm themselves and prepare for revolution. They don’t suggest that the government wants to take away their guns. These are all things a number of conservative talkers say. There is a direct causal relationship between right-wing leaders implying a need for armed revolution, and some people taking that seriously and acting on it.The actual relationship between crime and Democratic party ID is that they are both spurred by poverty. Living in poverty increases one’s tendency to commit crime, because of social dysfunction or desperation. It also increases one’s tendency to be a Democrat, because Democrats favor policies that help lift people out of poverty.

Bachmann has now said that Obama wants to herd young people into “reducation camps.”Can we seriously lock her up for being an unstable dillusional violence-inciting ignorant cunt? Im not joking.

  • LMarathon

JM- Do you have a link?I find it hard to believe that someone as stable and credible as Bachmann could have let slip something so unfounded…Mind bottling.

The wrong wing is divorced from reality. They don’t live in the reality that most of us live in. Their perceptions see enemies everywhere. They misinterpret nearly everything they hear. They think that Fox News is actually a News channel. Many of these people secretly cheer these shootings. They think they are somehow justified. They do not want the Crazy™ to be toned down because they think the fantasies that Deludus Maximus is on about are true.I don’t know what we should do about this. The video game / Columbine connection reminds me of the scene in Repo Man when Duke lies dying on the floor of the convenience store he was robbing right next to the generic corn flakes, and he tells Otto that society made him into a criminal. Otto yells “Bullshit. You’re a middle class punk just like me.”Neither Society or Video Games make people pick up guns and do outrageous things. People do outrageous things because they have seriously bad judgment or they need help or both. That said. When you have large numbers of people living in a delusional version of reality, having people like Glenn Beck and Michele Bachmann constantly talking about taking up arm and regaining control of the ‘stolen’ government is as responsible as walking around puddles of gasoline while smoking. IMO, FNC is being highly irresponsible.

  • kansasdem

The same was true during the presidential campaign!McBush & McMouthy would whip people into an actual frenzy and then act offended when someone like John Lewis called them on it!They are a bunch of FUCK-TARDS!

Skylights said”It also increases one’s tendency to be a Democrat, because Democrats favor policies that help lift people out of poverty.”Democrats favor policies that help the lobbies who contribute to them. You don’t really think that either party gives a rat’s ass about the poor, do you? Individuals within the parties might, but the party machine does not. The poor are merely a means to an end, a convenient sound bite for re-election. Giving speeches about helping the middle class or the poor is worthless; the words are as empty as a broken bottle.Despite what Democrats or Republicans will tell you, NOTHING substantial is being done to help the poor in our nation. Bob would argue most strenuously with me about that, but the proof is in the results. Currently, both parties spend most of their time gathering contributions from lobbyists and special interests; such as big oil, health insurers, pharma and big tobacco. If you want to eat at the big table, you’ve got to have millions to throw at the two parties.Otherwise, you’re just a sheeple to Democrats and Republicans.Maybe we have a President who can make a difference about that, but his own party will fight him tooth and nail on the issue of lobbying reform.

  • kansasdem

Adding:I have a fairly large collection of guns! They’re all legal! None are full-auto or assault rifles! They’re also in the possession of my oldest son because (along with a neuromuscular disorder) I suffer from Major Depressive Disorder! Some of us do have at least half a brain! Obviously others do not!Should I be restricted from buying more guns? YES!Do I have a problem with the idea of limitations and registration? HELL NO!I think some things are simply common sense!

  • kansasdem

PPP,You’re full of something besides yourself!

  • SillyRatfacedGit

PPP -You see things the way I do. Each party has members that appear to care, but neither party seems to care very much (as a party). The only thing you may not agree with me on is that I think that the Democratic Party, as a party, has looked out for the poor. Not as much as it should have, granted, but at least the Democratic Party makes an attempt to look out for the middle class and poor. The lobby situation has to be corrected or democracy is dead. All hail Corporatism.

  • Packy

LMarathon:Michelle Bachmann’s latest round of utter babbling shit can be found here.Yes, she said it.

Back to Bob’s comment (below). I am not sure I agree. Can the “impressionable children” get a assault weapon at some point? Then what?”Seriously, there’s a huge difference between mental patients or impressionable children mistaking fiction for reality, and adults with fixed ideologies and loaded guns acting upon calls for revolution from real-life elected officials and news network commentators. Huge difference.”
