How hot am I? FOUR IN A ROW! When is someone in the GOP going to tell Bachmann to STFU?

  • http://oneceltsview.blogspot.com/ Wolfe Tone

Bob,Why must it be one or the other? Doesn’t Glenn Beck usually do both?

  • rogect8

With gems like this:”If the Democrats can hose up a light bulb, don’t trust them with the country.” — Michelle Bachmanhow could they?

  • ElMystico

Hey, I just found The Wit of Michelle Bachmann on the list of the world’s shortest books.

  • http://www.thenewwearsoff.com/ Kyle

I wonder if a tin-foil hat would shield me from the Korean EMP/ion cannon…

  • dontpanic23

Wolfe Tone! I love your namesake band.

  • Curly Lasagna

“The Wisdom of Michelle Bachmann” is even shorter…..

  • http://oneceltsview.blogspot.com/ Wolfe Tone

DonPanic – Thanks. I do too.The nom de plume is from the same source the Wolfe Tones used – 18th century Irish rebel Theobald Wolfe Tone.

  • nitesurfer

Why is there so much preoccupation on here with crackpot Glenn Beck? We ought to police our own, specifically Andrew Sullivan, who writes today that America is a “rogue state” pushed there by the NY Times, the Wash. Post and assorted bloggers. Ahh. Andrew, weren’t you among the loudest supporters of Bush/Cheney and the invasion of Iraq? Yes you were. Saying “never mind” now doesn’t change a thing, except that now we have good reason not to trust your AIDS-addled, pothead judgement. Also, you write like a girl.

  • dontpanic23

Thanks, WT. I never knew the origin.

  • http://thepoliticalcarnival.blogspot.com/ Paddy

Bob, you should know that Glenn’s always got some crazy in his pocket- Video- “Civil unrest is coming… report your neighbors if you must”

  • emsique

I really wonder about the Minnesota district that Bachman represents. Them’s some crazy squareheads!

  • emsique

So while we are all getting distracted by the right wingnuts, we have The Great American Sellout on from “our” side. I really am alarmed that the guy I strongly supported in the election has so willingly sold us out.

  • gypsy

    >>>Also, you write like a girl.nitesurfer….you should have left that out dude! if i wanted to take the time i would deeply reem your ass not just over the anti-gay sentiment you just protrayed but the underlying implication that females are the weaker sex by using your “oh snap burn you throw like a girl!” comment. i’ll just say i don’t care how liberal you might be you are still a prick!

  • http://oneceltsview.blogspot.com/ Wolfe Tone

Mystico – I was going to propose “The Witsof Michelle Bachmann,” but we all know that’s just non-existent.

  • hielo

Bob, I will respond to your Glen Cock…oops “Beck” question.MSNBC just aired a silly…oh so silly.. Beck piece. He appears at the bottom of the screen that is displaying Nazi marching shit. Remember the “Patton” scene?I took my figures and just squeezed his pathetic little head.

  • fe

ooh, Gypsy, showin’ some fire! I like it!speaking of gays, can I get a collective “Hell, yeah, Iowa!”?

  • emsique

God, Hielo! I never thought of crushing his head with my fingers! Feels so good to have his little peanut sized brain squishing out! Muchas gracias!

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! “Launched them at the Spartans,” I says! AHAHAHAHAHAHA! I made me a Sports Joke! That’s AWESOME!Because…I know fucking nothing about sports. *Cough*

  • dy

gypsy, it’s unfortunate and somewhat unexpected, but the liberal guys don’t necessarily “get it” any better in terms of sexism that their conservative counterparts do. Though many of them will claim they supposedly do. Saying someone does something like a girl or, especially, calling them a pussy is always the ultimate putdown.I had to leave here for a while after a particularly vile rant regarding Nancy Pfotenhauer that involved the poster wanting to perform oral rape on her, essentially. (“I want to make her go GAAAK GAAAK GAAAK just like in those most vicious blowjob video clips. … Pfotenhauer? Wear a bib, baby.”) I don’t care how vile the conservafem is, Coulter and Malkin included, that kind of thing definitely crosses my line, for whatever that’s worth. There are some feminist-friendly/political venues you can check out, like Pandagon and Feministe, e.g., which I have to often do simply to keep my sanity after roaming around the male-dominated political blogosophere for extended periods of time.

  • Elvis the Dingeldein™

I don’t know how much of his own writing Keith does, but he really is the most literate, well-spoken Talking Head on the Tees and Vees today. He has his clownish, bombastic side*, but I do appreciate his honesty and his well-heeled phrasing.”Bombast the Clown” was, in fact, the name of the entertainer my parents hired for my 3rd birthday. It was something of a disaster.

  • fe

let me point out, dy, and rest assured that I am female as well, the vile rant you cited does not reference rape and in fact, by telling Pfotenhauer to wear a bib, implies her consent within this hypothetical scenario.moral of the story: don’t throw around the word rape.

  • Elvis the Dingeldein™

Dy – Well said, thank you. And personally noted. Politics is a misogynistic business, we should all be more careful with what we say while a’ranting.

  • fe

let me amend: it’s still a vile, sexist, hateful rant.

  • veralynn

clowns have always creeped me out. made me very glad my parents told us we were poor and couldn’t afford one….and nice sports comment Elvis, I am sort of hoping carolina loses, but don’t tell anyone. (I don’t want to have to clean up my yard in the morning.)

  • idreamofskiba

That’s funny, today my friend and I were talking about how if we didn’t know any better and just saw Glenn Beck on TV for the first time we would probably think it was just an SNL skit or something.

  • Elvis the Dingeldein™

Oh, The Maker’s Mark™. Why can’t you come in handy Edible Form, so that I might have a lovely dinner of sauteed Maker’s Mark™ on a bed of fresh steamed Maker’s Mark™, with a side of baked Maker’s Mark™ with sour cream and butter and a lovely Maker’s Mark™ split for dessert?

  • jane

    Mmmm. Maker’s Mark au gratin.

  • Elvis the Dingeldein™

Ohhh, my The Christ™. I don’t think I’ve ever actually heard Levi Johnston talk until just now, on KO, and I’ve been so, so wrong about this boy! All this time I’ve thought he was a Yokel wrapped in a Cleatus with his head up a Gump, but he’s nothing of the sort! Rhodes Scholar, I say! Poet Laureate, I tell you! And his sister looks NOTHING like she just fell off the back of a Partridge Family bus!

  • gypsy

dy, i agree. however, some liberal guys do get it. bob is a perfect example of this. (at least what i know of him publically) those thoughts are programmed into people, even women, early on and it infuriates me because history shows that women were the highly regarded sex. in terms of respect, property, name lineage, leaders, etc. fuck the men! (sometimes literally) hahaha. oh, i’m so funny….

  • TruthSerum

Why worry about Beck, Bachmann, Coulter , or Malkin? They are distractions for the mentally ill…hmmmmm…Focus on the 8.5% unemployment rate, the disntegration of manufacturing in the US, the skyrocketing number of children in single families (before the arrowa fly lest look at facts, children from two parent families (Note: I did not specify male and female) fare better), Irans progress towards a nuke and Israels vow to stop them and a President who is apologizing to everyone except those that he is fleeing: the American taxpayer!

  • http://obamaproject.windonwater.net QueenTiye

I’m all kinds of off topic but I needed to vent. I seriously hate when people think its just ok to sh!t all over other people and then act like everyone is supposed to be over it just because they are. I hate when people inject themselves into my life just for the fun of screwing it up then get all Urkel “Did I do that?” about it when sh!t is f**ked up. What is wrong with people! And yes, I’m on the danged train crying my eyes out. :( QT

  • fe

y’know, elvis, you can often substitute whiskey for water. if you really want more booze in your meals.

  • dy

We’ll have to agree to disagree then, fe. I don’t see any implication, anywhere, of “consent” regarding the actions involved in that rant, because of the bib statement (which simply suggested to me an even more vicious, messy, “loaded,” so to speak, encounter, with the added implication of childlike humiliation) or otherwise.Rape is not a word I throw around lightly, at all, I assure you. And something written like that post was could be quite a trigger for anyone who has personally experienced sexual abuse, no matter how blithely unaware the writer might have been about that possibility.

  • SillyRatfacedGit

jane – yes everything is in bloom here. To me they are all just flowers. The aloe plant bloomed this year. I’ve never seen aloe flowers before.

  • dy

    >>Until you overcome your inner conflict, nothing anyone says or does will ameliorate your feelings of injustice. My “inner conflict” about sexism, I can only presume you’re speaking of? I don’t want my feelings of injustice regarding that ameliorated, not until such time as there is no injustice at all in that realm (which I don’t expect to be happening during my lifetime, though hopefully it will become much closer to the ideal during my daughter’s time). The rant in question wasn’t directed at me personally, so my feelings about it had nothing to do with any self-confidence, inner conflict, what-have-you issues, but with my feelings about male-directed hatred and anger towards women in general. The hatred expressed about Nancy P. was entirely understandable. The means of expressing it was not. I would be just as offended at something as blatantly hatefully homophobic or racist as that was sexist.I honestly can’t imagine living a life where *no* jokes caused offense. McCain’s doozies come to mind, right off the bat. Or Limbaugh’s so-called attempts at humor, etc. I can’t and wouldn’t ever choose to just laugh those off. Complacency’s not really my cup of tea. I will continue to be offended by that which I consider offensive. Which seems to be quite par for the course with most of the folks here, unless I’ve been missing something.

  • Kat

Oleander is familiar. Because I used to live on that street. And isn’t hellbore a weapon used in medieval times?

  • idreamofskiba

Do plants really have emotions? ‘Cause that’s what my brother’s friend told me yesterday.

  • jane

Hey, dy, I really am on your side. This is just an awkward public place to discuss. Believe me, I didn’t mean to insult you. Just possibly the person who said it may have thought his(?) audience knew him better than to take him seriously (and not ironically).

  • jane

Skiba, dunno if they have emotions.Kat, Oleander is indeed a popular street name. And it is toxic, but so are most garden plants. Hell, don’t eat tomato leaves, for example. Deadly Nightshade family.

  • SillyRatfacedGit

dy -You should be appalled by sexism. Not everyone is suited by temperament to have as thick a skin as jane has developed. No insult to jane, but I doubt she can shrug off everything either. Few people can. And those that can are usually because they developed that skill out of necessity. I wouldn’t wish that on Limbaugh.Humor is the only way most offensive topics can be approached. When it is understood that the intent is humor, the offense is blunted. When the humor is not apparent, it is just hurtful.

  • jane

Git = Yoda. Listen to him.

  • AZDem

Hello, to have emotions you need to have a brain.I can’t explain the wingnuts, but plants do not have emotions.

  • idreamofskiba

I think he was around some kind of plant before saying that…

  • dy

It’s true, jane, this really isn’t the place to discuss it, especially since it’s about a regular, which I guessed was why I was getting a bit of what felt like a smackdown (and that’s okay, BTDT with the pack thing in close-knit internet communities I’ve been involved with myself over time). That post really struck me since I read it, though, in terms of thinking about male “liberals” in general as regards sexism. And reminded me of the Daily Kos blowout, etc. I only tangented off like that because of my originally agreeing with gypsy about sexist comments, but it probably have been best for me to leave that particular example out.

  • SillyRatfacedGit

This will sound silly. But…I think plants respond to human emotion. I am fond of African Violets. I have no problem getting mine to bloom at least three times a year. They will bloom every quarter year if they are happy.Whenever I water them (normally once a week) I think calm soothing thoughts. My favorites are on the kitchen window sill (They like humidity) and I talk pleasantly to them when I make coffee.Since I propagate them, I always had some to give away. No one else that I gave them to had them bloom more than once a year. I taught them the intricacies of watering them. Perhaps I should have told them about the calm thoughts and mild conversation.I swear to the Invisible Pink Unicorn that I am not crazy. The talking to them started when I had some that had not bloomed for over a year. I went to them every day and asked them why they were not blooming. After a week and a half of this they bloomed. After that I kept talking to them and they have bloomed 3 and sometimes 4 times a year ever after.

  • emsique

My wife comes home mid morning from work unexpectedly, we have a lovely bit of quality time followed by a shower, and I come back to PLANTS!?They definitely respond to emotion and attention. I have these cool plants on my balcony here that have a scrotum shaped flower that catch and digest mosquitoes.

  • fe

silly, I think the mythbusters proved that plants do, in fact, respond to thoughts and nurturing voices.

  • http://obamaproject.windonwater.net QueenTiye

Wait… what’s this about needing brains to have emotions? Can we get some clarity/science on the subject? I’m not sure I agree with this at all… but I’m willing to learn…QT

  • jane

Hey QT, I might be on your side in this debate. I’d bet that the added attention paid while “talking” to your plants means they get better care.

  • emsique

QT, the brain is an overrated organ.

  • fe

just because a plant reacts to auditory stimuli doesn’t mean it has emotions.

  • jane

and dy, I sort of stand by what I tried to say earlier:Once this sort of thing doesn’t bother you, then this sort of thing won’t bother you. If you know what I mean.Git is right; you do have to develop some sort of thicker skin, but not necessarily today and not necessarily right now, just eventually, for your own well being.

  • emsique

I know this is really cosmic, but when you project good vibes, living things do respond in a positive way. My ex at one time had about 60 houseplants, and I know they thrived in part because of the vibes she sent them. (she reserved the bad vibes for me)Spend time quietly in the forest, and tell me you don’t feel something. Jesus, what a hippie I can be sometimes.

  • http://obamaproject.windonwater.net QueenTiye

fe: what makes us so sure that the conscious processing of thoughts in response to stimuli is what constitutes “emotion”? Do we know this for certain? Or is the fact that we have the capacity to process emotions through our conscious thought processes give rise to our moral sense?QT

  • SillyRatfacedGit

The Druids thought that the life force was strongest in trees. The life expectancy of trees made them the longest lived lifeform in their environment and so they contained more of the force.Druids did not pray to trees as such, they revered the life force that was concentrated in trees but was present in all life. Gaia is really what Druids were all about. Now that we have the life force permeating all life, the Druids (and others since) felt that this life force could create a hive mind of sorts. Druids certainly believed that trees had intelligence. The Ents in The Lord of the Rings actually capture much of the Druid thinking on trees if you subtract the walk about ability. To make a long story short I am not at all convinced that a brain is required for thought and emotion. I think the Druids were correct. I think that trees can think albeit in a way completely foreign to what we think of as thought.I only think this because I love trees and have spent a lot of time in deep forests. When you tune your mind correctly you can sense feelings from some trees. Or maybe it was just a flashback. In any case, I try not to hurt trees. It seems disrespectful.

I was busy most of the night but I just glanced over this whole thread…Some liberal guys dont “get” sexism? That may be true, but I would wager they are the group that is less likely to exploit it even if they don’t “get’ it.Sexism and Racism will both be replaced in about 20 to 30 years by genetic discrimination. Just wait until only the rich can afford gene treatments.QueenTye – I disagree with a lot of things you say, but I hate for you to be crying.Plant – Deffinantly respond to emotionJane is right, a good sense of humor is a strong defense. A good sense of humor, but not at the expensve of yourself. There is a fine line.To the trolls in this thread – Drop dead and rid the gene pool of yourselves.

I was just talking to a friend of mine who’s older than me by about 10 years, and she made the point that it’s partly a generational thing, with younger women often not feeling as strongly about feminist issues as those of us who’ve been more through the actual struggle do. (That’s a good sign, in a way, since it indicates that younger women haven’t experienced sexism to the degree we did and that there has been actual improvement, but disheartening in ways, too.)I think I’ve probably got a good 10-15 years on you, and more than that on gypsy and then fe by far, so as a Second Waver here, it may be difficult for me to convey that I don’t want to come to the point where these things don’t bother me (while they’re still going on, i.e.). Of course I don’t want to waste energy on things I can do absolutely nothing about, but I also don’t ever want to become complacent about sexism (or racism or homophobia, etc.), wherever I find it.But thanks for expressing concern about my well-being. :) Not that I see my “outrage” causing me any ulcers or anything at this point (12-16 aspirin a day for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis did do that to me, though, indeed).“If You’re Not Outraged, You’re Not Paying Attention”

Hey dy, don’t assume anything about my age. Just sayin, you might lose that bet.

Adding: don’t assume anything about my level of outrage, just because I don’t always show it.

mens power is on it’s way out! get use to it bitches! ;) as cliche as this is…one person can absolutely help change the standard. dy, look at elvis’ response to what you said. i have never heard elvis come close to admitting he was anything less than perfection. men and women need to notice the important situations where speaking up would help diminish sexism rather than harm the cause with touchiness. jane and i have talked and i don’t really see it as getting a tougher skin (which i think i come across as having but i really don’t) i see it as knowing what shit is important to “fight” and what isn’t. the harmful demeaning thoughts that if unnoticed will just travel on to the next person should definitely be called out. not so much the guy calling his friend a “pussy” for complaining about mcdonalds being out of chicken mcnuggets. it’s all about context! i made that statement up thread because that guy needed to be called out. (i felt) when a random guy “playfully” says something, as wrong as it is, it’s not worth pulling the sexist card on him. (note i said “playfully”)also, we can’t place the blame solely on guys. some women have way more damaging stereotypes related to gender than men.just to add…i love the “rougher” sense of humor. it’s who i surround myself with, it’s how i am, it’s what i enjoy and it’s what makes me laugh. dy, a large majority of us on here are bringing comments to this public forum from conversations we have privately. it may seem like something shitty was said on the surface but there is probably just a silly inside joke at the core of it. anyone who “knows” me on here knows that i will turn on my mom if she said something that pissed me off. so, i think most of the talk on here is just fluffy perverted humor because we are all pervs! hehe…also…also…(hehe) i work within a “male industry” and have to work twice as hard to get my goals accomplished properly! it sucks ass. but after i show them that they can’t fuck with me they don’t! you absolutely teach people how to treat you in life. and if someone doesn’t comply with what i expect they’re not in my life. period.

Adding: don’t assume anything about my level of outrage, just because I don’t always show it.

Often, all a thick skin is doing is hiding the hurt from the inflicter of hurt. It doesn’t actually stop the hurt, it just appears to. This is often useful even though hurt is still felt.Gypsy -I’ll make a slight change:You absolutely have to teach people how to treat you in life.Things generally work better when you let people know how you expect to be treated. Women are not common in Engineering, but they are not rare anymore. Most women engineers were right up front on how they expected to interact. Technogeeks have too much to do to waste time with bullshit so blunt and to the point is generally preferred.

just wanted to say my last little paragraph up there is a bit “king of the worlddddd”. it’s easy to say and do when you are the employer. i completely know that it’s not as simple as that when your livelihood is dependant on a douchebag sexist boss. just wanted to say that…

  • dy

    >>dy, look at elvis’ response to what you said.Hee. I also mentioned just that to my older angry, humorless, hairy-legged feminist friend (if you only knew her, hah) … that if nothing else, if Elvis got my gist, it was worth the bother. I expect some more writing out of the Elvis in the future, hopefully some book/s, and if he now maintains a little more awareness about sexism than he might have before, then woot!!>>also, we can’t place the blame solely on guys.Oh, jees, no. The female colluders can be even worse, no doubt about it. Though we might have a little more empathy for them, knowing that it’s partly their sense of powerlessness that has led them to sell out their own sex.Hey, obviously I like (or at least tolerate, but actually happen to like) the “rougher” humor, or I wouldn’t be lurking here constantly. There are just some things that cross the line, and for me, “that thing” was definitely one of them. And I think I will call it “Fin” for that subject now.

true dat sillygit! ;) the problem is that a lot of women have been taught that they are “delicate” and should be treated so. (definitely not how i was raised!) i mean, do i want someone to be kind and nice to me, uhh…yeah! but i don’t “need” it. i have to do everything on my own, i always have. my mom has to. my grandmother has to. my great grandmother had to. the women in my family are all we have to depend on (well, and my brother but he is the most sensitive one of all of us! hehe) it’s a crappy world. what more can you say?! ;)

  • gypsy

oh yeah dy! i was not referring to that! that def. crossed the line in my mind!

There are plenty of sexist liberals. I actually found some of the biggest sexist dicks to be so called sensitive, new age guys (SNAGs). Sexism is a much deeper thing than politics, and is much worse in the rest of the world outside European countries. It varies from the total oppression of the Taliban to China, where the national government declares total equality, but the actual practice is far from perfect.

    >>”If You’re Not Outraged, You’re Not Paying Attention”Didn’t mean to assume anything about anybody’s level of outrage but my own. And speaking of that, I’m retroactively expressing my outrage over your nipple being grabbed while you were in Korea, jane. I didn’t get a chance to respond during that thread (and it’s probably just as well, considering where my response would probably have taken things), but I just have to say I felt appalled and hurt for you when you mentioned that.I have a grown daughter, so I can imagine how I’d feel if she was in a situation like that (and with my thin skin/empathy, that actually hits much closer to home than if I imagined I was experiencing it myself). I know a new grandma with a 1-year-old granddaughter who loves how she can get over on her adult sons now when talking about degrading commercials, music videos, etc. Where they used to just make fun of her “overreaction,” now all she has to do is say, “Imagine if that was your daughter/niece?” Ka-pow. She says there’s nothing better than seeing the looks on their faces at moments like that.

dy -I have two daughters and a feminist mother. I saw much of what my mother was up against in the 60s and 70s and so I was less sexist than many men of my generation. Having two daughters got rid of what was left. Now ads on TV are actually sexist against men. Men seem to be depicted as incompetent to operate vacuum cleaners and washers and driers.Progress is slow. I had hoped that racism would be over with by now. Sexism will also linger I fear.

    >>I actually found some of the biggest sexist dicks to be so called sensitive, new age guys (SNAGs).Ah, yes, emsique, SNAGs … a.k.a. a ‘Nigel.’

That supposed reverse sexism thing is interesting, Git. The Homer Simpson/Bumbling Dad syndrome, yeah. And soo, soo many other characters (The Family Guy, King of Queens, The Honeymooners, etc., etc.). All characters written *by* men.I don’t know if it’s partly a backlash to feminism or what, but it sure does seem convenient and fun to be able to act like a total blumbling idiot and/or continually childlike and have the mom/wife/saint take care of everything and clean up all your mistakes for you. Or at least accept you without any reservations, no matter how badly you mess up. Often an overweight/average-looking guy hooked up with a hotter-than-him female partner too.I haven’t really thought on this one a whole lot yet, but it certainly seems like just some more of the same ol’ same ol’ to me, wrapped up in a slightly different package. And might even be considered the ultimate Average Amerikun Joe wet dream in most respects.

  • SillyRatfacedGit

I wasn’t actually referring to the depiction of men in programs, just in advertising. But now that you mention it, I think your interpretation of the characters is correct. The wife is the competent parent in both the Simpsons and The Family Guy, while the husbands can barely feed themselves. I don’t watch much commercial television anymore so I haven’t seen King of Queens. The Honeymooners was the first of this type and it lead to most of the others we mentioned. You know that the writers of the Simpsons and Family Guy have seen every episode of the Honeymooners multiple times. I’ve never been annoyed by the male character’s being incompetent in any of these shows however. Since it is comedy, the potential offensiveness is not there. It is the advertising that depicts Dad as a klutzy incompetent that offends me. Only mommy can give the children their Vicks, Dad’s a moron. Dad’s incapable of putting stain stick on little jimmy’s grass stained jeans but here comes Mom to the rescue.Advertising bothers me anyway. Propaganda to make you want shit you don’t need.

In response to men being portrayed as bumbling idiots on TV… Women, and to a lesser extent minorities, have a much easier time landing jobs these days than white men. You won’t see me crying sexism, but I dont think its exactly fair either. I think its because women are usualy prettier to look at, not because they are better/smarter at the job (although a lot are). Is that really sexism? or is it exploitation? Or are they the same thing? Go to almost any store/business and youll see women working on the floor in sight of customers and the men are in the back hidden from view. Its all marketing and presentation.
