I loves the Glenn. That’s what I meant today about our leadership being an Epic Fail. They have been doing this from the beginning, covering for and ignoring the abuses of the Bush administration and now they want to continue to do it.On a slightly different topic, I’m encouraged to see that Obama is going to use budget reconciliation to get around the Republicans and the Blue Dog “Dems” like Nelson to get a few things done.

In March 2008, Kwame Kilpatrick was charged with eight felonies, including perjury and obstruction of justice. In August, he violated his bail agreement and was thrown in jail. His actions were deplorable for anybody, but Kilpatrick was no Average Joe–he was the mayor of Detroit.Unfortunately for the Motor City, Kilpatrick, 38, is just one ripple in the area’s sea of crime. Detroit is the worst offender on our list of America’s most dangerous cities, thanks to a staggering rate of 1,220 violent crimes committed per 100,000 people.More from Forbes.com:• In Depth: America’s Most Dangerous Cities• World’s Most Dangerous Countries• The World’s Most Dangerous Waters”Detroit has, historically, been one of the more violent cities in the U.S.,” says Megan Wolfram, an analyst at iJet Intelligent Risk Systems, a Maryland-based risk-assessment firm. “They have a number of local crime syndicates there–a number of small gangs who tend to compete over territory.”Detroit was followed closely on the list by the greater Memphis, Tenn., and Miami, Fla., metropolitan areas. Those three were the only large cities in America with more than 950 violent crimes committed per 100,000 people.Behind the NumbersTo determine our list, we used violent crime statistics from the FBI’s latest uniform crime report, issued in 2008. The violent crime category is composed of four offenses: murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Let’s see how deep the rabbit hole goes…..From Glen Greenwaldhttp://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2007/12/09/democrats/From Glen Greenwaldhttp://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2007/12/09/democrats/The Washington Post reports today that the Bush administration, beginning in 2002, repeatedly briefed leading Congressional Democrats on the Senate and House Intelligence Committees — including, at various times, Jay Rockefeller, Nancy Pelosi, and Jane Harman — regarding the CIA’s “enhanced interrogation methods,” including details about waterboarding and other torture measures. With one exception (Harman, who vaguely claims to have sent a letter to the CIA), these lawmakers not only failed to object to these policies, but affirmatively supported them. And efforts to apologize for what these Congressional Democrats have done by claiming that they “were virtually helpless to respond,” or suggesting that knowingly inconsequential expressions of private protest are somehow noble, are counter-productive. Why excuse or apologize for the profound failure of those who seek leadership positions on the Intelligence Committee — who, after all, are being briefed PRECISELY BECAUSE THEY ARE EXPECTED TO ACT WHEN THEY LEARN OF ILLEGAL BEHAVIOR — when they abdicate their responsibilities? That only encourages such malfeasance to continue.
Did you see Lawrence O’Donnell last night and what he said about the Cheney/Hannitys? Pretty much the same thing. He said that they endorse and favor torture as a method of extracting information because they know that under the same circumstances they would fold easily and give up everything they know. He called them weak and soft. Of course, he included himself in that category. He hammered the shit out of the Cheneys, pointing out how none of them have ever bothered to be brave enough to put their lives on the line in the military. It was Goddamn Awesome.

yeah, AJ, it’s the Dem’s fault for not objecting strenuously enough – ’cause doing so might have changed the minds of the people who already KNEW that waterboarding is torture & that torture is illegal and did it anyway!Or were you thinking that those of us opposed to the former adminstration’s breaking the law & acting in an immoral, unethical, totally conscienceless manner would change our minds because some asshole claims that the Dems knew? And, just to clear up the misconception you have, they weren’t expected or allowed to do anything when briefed. Talk to no one & don’t even take notes.but good luck with that ridiculous argument anyway. It’s pretty much all ya got…

If I agree that dems knew about this, they should be prosecuted right alongside the repugs. But until I find out everything regarding those briefings, I will take the word of the dems who were there.I would also add that the dems on the intelligence committee’s were in the minority and had no real power to do anything without committing treason. Now, having said all that–torture is and has been illegal in this country since 1947. The year may be wrong, but it was after WWII.Anyone who participated in creating the environment that resulted in these acts ought to be held accountable, ethically, morally and legally.Anyone who thinks this is justified in ANY situation or for ANY reason is an idiot twatwaffle. So has anybody chatted with Bob about the incessant trollishness and their co-opting of our handles? I thought about emailing him but I’m sure he’s aware of what goes on in the comments.I had sort of an epiphany or some such craziness last night and it concerns Cheney. I feel like he and his evil offspring are suddenly on the airwaves trying as hard as they can to keep us distracted. I feel as if we are very near something he does not want revealed. They keep trying to center the conversation on the semantics of what they did. A useless exercise since torture is clearly defined in statute and law and you can’t just call it something else. It is a complete distraction. He wants us debating whether or not it worked, how they saved lives. I just feel like he is frantically jumping up and down screaming “Over here! Over here!” because we’re about to stumble onto the shallow grave of some truly heinous act.
He is dividing the country rather than unifying it and he and the left will lose

Hey el Presidente! Welcome to Latin America!!!Please make sure that you defecate in the drinking water and wear your dung ladedn shoes before coming in!!Areeebbbbaaaaa!!!! La cooka ra cha!!!!!MEXICO CITY – A unique strain of swine flu is the suspected killer of dozens of people in Mexico, where authorities closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in the capital on Friday to try to contain an outbreak that has spurred concerns of a global flu epidemic. The worrisome new virus — which combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way researchers have not seen before — also sickened at least eight people in Texas and California, though there have been no deaths in the U.S.”We are very, very concerned,” World Health Organization spokesman Thomas Abraham said. “We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human … It’s all hands on deck at the moment.”The outbreak caused alarm in Mexico, where more than 1,000 people have been sickened. Residents of the capital donned surgical masks and authorities ordered the most sweeping shutdown of public gathering places in a quarter century. President Felipe Calderon met with his Cabinet Friday to coordinate Mexico’s response. The WHO was convening an expert panel to consider whether to raise the pandemic alert level or issue travel advisories. It might already be too late to contain the outbreak, a prominent U.S. pandemic flu expert said late Friday.Given how quickly flu can spread around the globe, if these are the first signs of a pandemic, then there are probably cases incubating around the world already, said Dr. Michael Osterholm at the University of Minnesota. In Mexico City, “literally hundreds and thousands of travelers come in and out every day,” Osterholm said. “You’d have to believe there’s been more unrecognized transmission that’s occurred.”There is no vaccine that specifically protects against swine flu, and it was unclear how much protection current human flu vaccines might offer. A “seed stock” genetically matched to the new swine flu virus has been created by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, said Dr. Richard Besser, the agency’s acting director. If the government decides vaccine production is necessary, manufacturers would need that stock to get started.Authorities in Mexico urged people to avoid hospitals unless they had a medical emergency, since hospitals are centers of infection. They also said Mexicans should refrain from customary greetings such as shaking hands or kissing cheeks. At Mexico City’s international airport, passengers were questioned to try to prevent anyone with flu symptoms from boarding airplanes and spreading the disease.Epidemiologists are particularly concerned because the only fatalities so far were in young people and adults. The eight U.S. victims recovered from symptoms that were like those of the regular flu, mostly fever, cough and sore throat, though some also experienced vomiting and diarrhea.U.S. health officials announced an outbreak notice to travelers, urging caution and frequent handwashing, but stopping short of telling Americans to avoid Mexico.Mexico’s Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordoba said 68 people have died of flu and the new swine flu strain had been confirmed in 20 of those deaths. At least 1,004 people nationwide were sick from the suspected flu, he said. The geographical spread of the outbreaks also concerned the WHO — while 13 of the 20 deaths were in Mexico City, the rest were spread across Mexico — four in central San Luis Potosi, two up near the U.S. border in Baja California, and one in southern Oaxaca state.Scientists have long been concerned that a new flu virus could launch a worldwide pandemic of a killer disease. A new virus could evolve when different flu viruses infect a pig, a person or a bird, mingling their genetic material. The resulting hybrid could spread quickly because people would have no natural defenses against it.Still, flu experts were concerned but not alarmed about the latest outbreak.”We’ve seen swine influenza in humans over the past several years, and in most cases, it’s come from direct pig contact. This seems to be different,” said Dr. Arnold Monto, a flu expert with the University of Michigan.”I think we need to be careful and not apprehensive, but certainly paying attention to new developments as they proceed.”The CDC says two flu drugs, Tamiflu and Relenza, seem effective against the new strain. Roche, the maker of Tamiflu, said the company is prepared to immediately deploy a stockpile of the drug if requested. Both drugs must be taken early, within a few days of the onset of symptoms, to be most effective.Cordoba said Mexico has enough Tamiflu to treat 1 million people, but the medicine will be strictly controlled and handed out only by doctors.Mexico’s government had maintained until late Thursday that there was nothing unusual about the flu cases, although this year’s flu season had been worse and longer than past years. The sudden turnaround by public health officials angered many Mexicans.”They could have stopped it in time,” said Araceli Cruz, 24, a university student who emerged from the subway wearing a surgical mask. “Now they’ve let it spread to other people.”The city was handing out free surgical masks to passengers on buses and the subway system, which carries 5 million people each day. Government workers were ordered to wear the masks, and authorities urged residents to stay home from work if they felt ill.Closing schools across Mexico’s capital of 20 million kept 6.1 million students home, as well as thousands of university students. All state and city-run cultural activities were suspended, including libraries, state-run theaters, and at least 14 museums. Private athletic clubs closed down and soccer leagues were considering canceling weekend games. The closures were the first citywide shutdown of public gathering places since thousands died in the devastating 1985 earthquake.Mexico’s response brought to mind other major outbreaks, such as when SARS hit Asia. At its peak in 2003, Beijing shuttered schools, cinemas and restaurants, and thousands of people were quarantined at home.In March 2008, Hong Kong ordered more than a half-million students to stay home for two weeks because of a flu outbreak. It was the first such closure in Hong Kong since the outbreak of SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome.”It’s great they are taking precautions,” said Lillian Molina, a teacher at the Montessori’s World preschool in Mexico City, who scrubbed down empty classrooms with Clorox, soap and Lysol between fielding calls from worried parents.U.S. health officials said the outbreak is not yet a reason for alarm in the United States. The five people sickened in California and three in Texas have all recovered. It’s unclear how the eight, who became ill between late March and mid-April, contracted the virus because none were in contact with pigs, which is how people usually catch swine flu. And only a few were in contact with each other.CDC officials described the virus as having a unique combination of gene segments not seen before in people or pigs. The bug contains human virus, avian virus from North America and pig viruses from North America, Europe and Asia. It may be completely new, or it may have been around for a while and was only detected now through improved testing and surveillance, CDC officials said. The most notorious flu pandemic is thought to have killed at least 40 million people worldwide in 1918-19. Two other, less deadly flu pandemics struck in 1957 and 1968.____Associated Press Writers Maria Cheng in London; Traci Carl in Mexico City; Mike Stobbe in Atlanta, Georgia; and Malcolm Ritter in New York contributed to this report.

Git – I’m with you. The plan from the beginning of that administration was to get into Iraq. 9/11 provided the excuse. It was all about the invasion of Iraq.I think it goes back a bit farther.I used to actually like Dick Cheney. He swore me and several other service dudes and dudettes into the military at a special ceremony at Mile High Stadium during the Rockies’ inaugural season. I’d thought he was especially awesome because as soon as the Cold War was officially over, he was before Congress arguing that we could no longer support such a large military and that’s when we started decomming ships and bases left and right. Now looking back, it seems like that was perhaps the beginning of the privatization push. Slim down the military, ostensibly to save money, then start handing out private contracts to make up for the loss in military infrastructure. This guy has been doing dirty shit in Washington for forty years. It just boggles the mind.

Dessert wise, SaraLee puts out this magnificent pie called “Fruits of the Forest” that I could live on– such is its deliciousness. I don’t really make my own desserts, but I also love Marie Callender’s Razzleberry pie. Arrgh! Now I want pie!

alright, Silly, I beg Your Brilliance to help me out. how do I make the website remember who I am? right now I type in fe, paste in my email address, and then drag my blog address to the URL. there’s gotta be a faster way, and I’ve tried clicking ‘remember me’ a few hundred times.

Hey Caped, I knew your site had to be good since it was blocked here in China and I had to use a proxy server to find it. That could also be because they automatically block sites that have the word shit in them. It’s amazing how they try to block stuff here, but a little effort cant get you where you want. I still haven’t been able to get a consistent connection to the youtubes, though.I like to use google images to get pix for my classes, and they fuck with that, too. Usually only let me get images for about a dozen tries.

fe I did. I mean I do. I run it and I designed it. It’s a hobby (right now) I was a reporter but tech writing pays better. No Pulitzer for me.Emisque, thanks for that info good to know.

Bob needs a new site. A nice CMS with a forum. Maybe he’ll hire me – woot.

Hello Ms. Fe! I can’t speak for Git regarding pie, but I do have it on good authority that our Git is a bit of a coffee snob…

OOOOH! Damn Commies. I can’t register on Shit’s site cause I’m using a proxy server. I wanted to comment on credit cards. The new legislation is a good first step, but we need to enact laws that stop the usurious rates that these loan sharks charge. Maybe a 12% cap. It’s damn near impossible to pay off a loan at 20% interest. I think the bible even forbids it.
http://www.shitheadery.com Caped Shitheader
thanks for the props Teh Minx always good to have a fan. I’m looking forward to their articles too.The possible prose is wide open when it comes to shitheadery. Politicians, customer service, drivers, bosses, employees, employers, d-bags galore. We can trend the end of civilization.

fe -If you are using firefox I think there is a plugin (or whatever they call the extension stuff these days) that will remember all forms data for a website if you tell it too.Nutscrape used to do that all the time, but it was overkill so they reduced it to just remembering login info. The plugin restores the old school behavior. I don’t know what it is called I just remember seeing it when I was trying to find a plugin that would remember all of my tabs so I would get the same set of tabs visiting the same sites ever time I bring up the browser.I remember when Mosaic was the only graphical browser out there. Now I have more than a dozen to pick from (I am on Linux).
http://www.shitheadery.com Caped Shitheader
I’ve got one at 29% – that’s without being late or going over. “Because we can,” is what the phone weasel said to me. Bee atch

Now nutscrape is a name I’d like to see as a by line. I wouldn’t care if it was written in Swahili.

Apple and hair.I have diabetes so I have to be careful with pie.I really love Shoe Fly pie. But since it is basically made of molasses, brown sugar, flour, and shortening, I can’t eat it very often. Also, you can only find it near Lancaster County PA so it’s not available where I now am.I am very fond of the Key Lime pie here though.

Teh Minx is correct. I despise shit coffee. Life is too short to drink shitty stale coffee.Life is too short to drink cheap beer also too.

git, I did a piece on cat shit coffee … ever try that? Sounds absolutely scrumptious. The ‘cat like’ creature eats the coffee beans, craps it out, they pick the beans out his turd (or hers) and make coffee out of it and sell it for $80/shot. Fantastic

I’m on safari. I drink turkish coffee, anyone else?

oh, I forgot there’s a shitheadery.com FB page and I’m on twitter. Just got on twitter and not very excited about it. Maybe a 12% cap.”President Obama recently met with top executives of the nation’s largest credit card companies and threw his support behind credit card reform legislation. Senator Bernie Sanders agrees, but he would do more. He proposed a bill to cap interest rates at 15 percent, similar to credit unions.”http://www.sanders.senate.gov/qa/creditcards.cfm

yeah, and next week the cc companies will start dumping money into lobbying against it. Shit, the TARP morons upped their lobbying 34% percent using taxpayer money.

I’ve heard that safari is pretty good.If you are on OS X, you can get firefox. No real compelling reason to do so though. Safari is a decent browser.I’m not currently using firefox either, all though I do from time to time. I am using a browser called Galeon. You have to have a GTK/GNOME desktop environment to run these, so I think it’s a chore to run it on OS X. It runs on virtually any other unix or linux.I have to install about 15 or so plugins to firefox to get it to do all of the stuff that galeon does ‘out of the box’. I’ve been using galeon for close to 10 years.

My favorite coffee is a 50/50 blend of Guatamala Antigua and Colombia Supremo both french roasted no longer than one week ago and brewed in an espresso machine.
http://emsique.blogspot.com emsique
I drink tea, for obvious reasons. I stopped my daily quart of French Roast about ten years ago after my first trip to Thailand. I do love a good cup now and then. They have coffee shops here with very good coffee for outrageous prices, no refills. You pay for the ambiance. Surprisingly, McDonald’s has very good coffee with free refills for about a buck. They have awesome cake here. And flaky little pastries, and little yummy tartlets, and an entire industry based on twinkie like pastries in orange, strawberry and chocolate flavors. The best chocolate comes from overseas, though.

Yikes! I HATE hot flashes! I’m supposed to be over this! Oh well, G’night all– Thanks again, Caped Shitheader, for letting me know about your site. It is quite cool. Off to kick off the covers…
