    >>>Tonight! Presidential press conference.dude, i think it’s tomorrow.

  • http://www.xkcd.com/ ∇ Silly Ratfaced Git ∇

Yeah. It’s Wednesday because of 100 days magic or something.Howdy gyps!

  • http://www.bobcesca.com Bob Cesca

    Whoops. Tomorrow night. Corrected!

  • fe

    scrubs musical!

  • dontpanic23

“…everything comes down to poo…”Thanks, fe. Reminds me of some politicians.

  • http://www.thenewwearsoff.com π Kyle π

It’s quite fun to watch a party implode.

The hard right already has a nickname for him: Benedict Arlen.

  • idreamofskiba

Is Fineman’s hair yellow now, or is my TV messing up?

  • http://www.bobcesca.com Bob Cesca

Fineman’s hair looks green to me. Why would he let the brown dye grow out only to dye it green?I can’t believe I’m writing about this.

  • ceu

How bizarre is it to hear Specter being referred to as a left-wing liberal?!

  • dontpanic23

Heh, we finally drew Bob into the muck of the Howard’s Hair Controversy™.

  • http://www.xkcd.com/ ∇ Silly Ratfaced Git ∇

gypsy -Do you measure distance using ‘hoot and a holler’ units?E.g. My nearest neighbor lives a hoot and a holler away. While this is associated with Appalachia and is common in WV and KY (at least) it was used commonly in SE PA as well.

  • jane

    I say “yonder” a lot.

  • dontpanic23

I’ve never been a yonderer–it never came out naturally. I do say that a neighbor lives a stone’s throw away but not a hoot or a holler. I’m not sure which is further.

  • http://www.xkcd.com/ ∇ Silly Ratfaced Git ∇

People, do the math. When there are only 99 Senators, 59 *is* a supermajority. It no longer matters when Franken is seated. We are Filibuster proof right now.Am I the only person to notice this? Was I supposed to keep this secret?WTF?Dazed and confused in Tampa Bay.I’m going to go watch a movie. BBL.

  • jane

I say it ironically. Stage yonder is the other side from wherever I am.

  • dontpanic23

Now that I can imagine, Jane. I was having trouble picturing you telling a cab driver in Korea that you wanted to stop yonder.

  • jane

And yeah, Fineman’s hair does look green. Chartreuse?

  • ceu

Is a hoot & a holler closer than a spit & a holler? or farther away?

  • jane

I remember “yoggi” and “choggi” mean here and there. Or there and here. I forget.

  • jane

I always thought “hoot” and “holler” were verbs.

  • http://www.windonwater.net QueenTiye

Ok – I have to turn the channel to take in the green hair…. now that Bob is commenting on it, it must be important!QT

  • gypsy

hiya silly! and hell to tha no on using hoot and holler. i might be from a “hollow” but it was filled with native americans. hehe…

  • dontpanic23

My grandfather used to say someone lived a “fair piece” down the road. That always sounded farther than a stone’s throw but maybe not as far as a hoot or a spit. Maybe Google Maps has them marked if you have a special plug-in?

  • dontpanic23

That depends, J. An owl’s sound would be a hoot. If I didn’t live on a hill I’d be down in the holler. I guess.

  • jane

Maybe I was thinking of “whooping and hollering.”

  • dontpanic23

Yeah, I was stretching on “holler”.

  • DenverDan

Silly,I would feel better if Franken was seated.

  • Kat

I don’t hear a lot of “hoot and holler” down here, especially referring to location. Maybe referring to those dang kids who live next door….The classic Southernism that cracks me up everytime is “Bless their heart.” You know, after that phrase, someone is about to get reamed. Ex: “Bless her heart, but she can’t sing worth a damn.”

  • http://homepage.mac.com/wildlifeweb/bird/flamingo/honolulu/flamingo01.jpg veralynn

that is my favorite as well Kat. It is like, as long as you bless them, then you can say anything. My grandma used to say over yonder. I don’t hear too much hoot and holler in relation to distance. I have always heard it to mean raising hell and being loud.Did tweety just say Specter was wrong?! Did I hear that right?

  • gypsy

haha! kat, i do it the other way. i rip into that ass then bless their heart. it’s better to end on a good note. hehe… i use “bless it” more though. ;)

  • http://www.windonwater.net QueenTiye

Um… Chris Matthews is kinda wrong here. I know it seems like some sort of disloyalty to leave the party, but what about the fact that the republicans left the party? Why can’t Specter say he signed on to serve the people, and not the party? If the bulk of your constituency switches parties – doesn’t it make sense to feel out where they are and serve THEM, rather than the party?I know we have a bunch of partisans here – Bob and Elvis are Democratic party folk… so help me understand this. Is Chris Matthews right about Specter’s “disloyalty” to his party, and does Specter deserve punishment for it?QT

  • http://www.windonwater.net QueenTiye

And another thing – if the party actually shifts away from you ideologically – how can you in good conscience stay with the party? How is that honest?QT

  • gypsy

queen, if i thought he was doing this for the people or based on his beliefs i would say good for him to reject the nasty ignorance of the right. but i think this is politically motivated and wouldn’t care what he did if he hadn’t joined the democratic party. i don’t like people using “me”.and oh yeah, matthews is a dumbfuckhead.

  • http://tarackian.deviantart.com J M Ashby

Specter has simply chosen logic and reason over stupidity and irrationality. Punishing him for that is like punishing someone for chosing fresh milk over spoiled milk. With more moderate voices like Specter leaving the party, the Republicans will literally will be left nothing but Wingnuts. Right now I’d say its about 90% wingnuts but is quickly approaching 100%.The Republican party is going to go beyond the Party of No, and simply become the Party of Crazy.I can’t even make sense of the Republicans anymore. At first it seemed like they felt the reason they have been losing is because they weren’t as far to the right as they should be…They’ve gone beyond the far right, off the cliff, down into the abyss, and to the point of no return from Crazyland.

  • http://www.windonwater.net QueenTiye

Here is Specter’s statement;”When I supported the stimulus package, I knew that it would not be popular with the Republican Party. But I saw the stimulus as necessary to lessen the risk of a far more serious recession than we are now experiencing.Since then, I have traveled the state, talked to Republican leaders and office-holders and my supporters and I have carefully examined public opinion. It has become clear to me that the stimulus vote caused a schism which makes our differences irreconcilable. On this state of the record, I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate. I have not represented the Republican Party. I have represented the people of Pennsylvania.”In other words, he doesn’t stand a chance in hell of getting re-elected right now, so he is going to change parties, so he can hopefully keep his job.

  • hielo

  • http://oneceltsview.blogspot.com/ Wolfe Tone

I pretty much despise Chris Matthews. He knows better.

  • http://www.windonwater.net QueenTiye

Yeah, Ken, but that’s a shallow look at the facts. The fact is that the Pennsylvania electorate had a massive shift during the primaries: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/28/how-hillary-clinton-got-s_n_192443.htmlIn fact, Nate Silver was talking about this for some time – mentioning that the remainder of the Republican party leaves no room for moderates like Specter. This is what the dying republican party looks like – a small, isolated, regional party. In a primary, Specter would get spanked, because what’s left of the republican party in PA are the Palin and Paul wings of the party. And as Elvis Dingeldein has mentioned in a prior post, the republican party numbers make it clear that the republican party no longer represents a reasonable segment of the Pennsylvania electorate (or even the American electorate).Nationwide, the same problem arises – 21% of the populace winnowed down to the far right of the conservative base electing a candidate in the primaries has no chance of winning in the general election – because that candidate will not appeal to the overall populace.QT

my big problem with Tweety is that he cares more about politics than people. So, to take torture as an example, he cares more about what the republicans will do and what the democrats will do than about the fact that the US tortured people. As Jon Stewart said, the debate is no longer framed as ‘right and wrong’, it’s framed as ‘right and left.’

    Hehe Chris:

I explained the single bullet theory to my boss today. He sat in shocked disbelief & then asked if I was making it up… :)

Well, Arlen was certainly making it up. I only let him slide because he’s an attorney. Physicists, Engineers, and Ballistics Experts all think he’s a moron when it comes to bullets.Hielo -Hey! Welcome back. I don’t think there will be a problem if you don’t fight with the regulars. We are a forgiving bunch, but remember that most of us think pretty highly of DP and Carl. How’s the fishing? How’s the H1N1 virus in your area? I’m not very clear on were in Mexico the major outbreaks are.

  • http://emsique.blogspot.com emsique

Good point, Fe. Too many TV squawking heads frame everything in a political context. Instead of a bunch of unemployed people need work, they will see it as the Left wingers want a jobs program. They see the fact that millions lack health coverage in political terms, too. It’s an outmoded way of thinking that becomes more and more irrelevant every day. Since the Repubes have become the party of inflexible ideologues, they have become more and more irrelevant.Arlen Specter was in essence, forced to change parties because he was in great danger of being defeated in the primary by a narrow minded ideologue.

  • fe

    what’s the single bullet theory?

  • Teh Minx

Hey Hielo– you are fine with me, except for the slapping of DP that you gave. As far as the incident with Carl– I still don’t believe that person was you, I’m convinced that your nym was stolen. I don’t know if an apology would be accepted by DP or if you even wish to offer one, that is up to the two of you. That being said, I did miss you & would like you back.I know I’m taking a risk, and we have definitely been burned, but I would like to give hielo another shot to play with us– if he/she will apologize to DP(yes, that is a change from what I said before, I’m entitled to change my mind! hee, hee).

    >>>the debate is no longer framed as ‘right and wrong’, it’s framed as ‘right and left.’fe, this is what is currently irritating me on other threads. if a bill is “right” why is it wrong if all the democrats vote for it?! people say i don’t want the left to be the same lockstep party as the republicans. well, for the most part, things democrats try to pass are thought out, researched, positives for the nation and it’s people. i don’t get how that is being the same as the republicans!

  • gypsy

hey minxy! you know i would let you use my netti pot! well…maybe not… but i would let you use it then have it! ;)

  • fe

well, sure, gyps, but that’s different than saying you don’t want moderates in the party. which – I’m not sure that’s what you said, I wasn’t paying a lot of attention to the other threads today.

GitYou would not believe the whale session I observed today. The Humbolt Squid are…. were… taking over the Sea of cortez. Today… at least 30 (40?) whales… sperm… (i’ll remember the other types tomorrow with no booze influence)… were feeding on the squid! We saw parts of squid drift past my boat.MinxNo, that deal with Carl was not me but DP decided he was the judge. No problem. fe -Kennedy (JFK) assassination.A totally ludicrous theory devised by Arlen Specter to explain how one bullet went through JFK’s neck, penetrated the seat in front of him entered Gov. Connely’s back, bounced off a rib, left out Connely’s chest and embedded itself in Connely’s wrist. The famous ‘magic’ bullet was ‘found’ on Connely’s stretcher by a federal agent. The ‘magic bullet’ was remarkably undamaged very much like bullets fired into water or ballistic jelly for ballistic testing. As you can tell I don’t believe the ‘Single Bullet theory for a picosecond. The real story is that more than three shots were fired and the shot that killed JFK came from the front, not from the School Book Depository.See Single Bullet Theory at the wikidoodlers.

  • fe

there’s so many conspiracies and conflicting notions about JFK’s assassinations that I’ve never known what to believe. I’m not someone who finds this kind of stuff interesting (more power to you if you do; I don’t have the patience), so I’ve never believed much beyond the common knowledge.

Wow Hielo. I wish I could have seen that with you. There are some rather large squid down there. I am a big fan of sperm whales because of their notorious battles with squid. Most large whales eat plankton and such. Sperm whales eat whatever they can catch are are fond of squid.

  • fe

off-topic: I hate current events homework. Yaargh.

  • ceu

What Git left out is that the Single Bullet Theory requires the single bullet to make a mid-air turn in order to come out of Kennedy’s throat & enter Connelly’s shoulder and another turn in order to enter Connelly’s arm. Most of us are taught that bullets travel in straight lines…

  • hielo

GitThis is absolutely no bullshit: A sperm whale raised it’s head less that 30 feet from the boat and opened it’s mouth. I am not ashamed to admit that it scared me a bit. It made a noise like… sort of ak.. ak.. ak.. but different than that. Maybe like a big Flipper-type noise. It was right after that when the guy on the bowsprit announced that the “squid part” was drifting past the boat.Oh wow. i am still psyched.

  • Teh Minx

Ms. Fe– a neti pot looks rather like an elongated tea-pot, it has been used for many years in the Orient. You fill it with warm water and, if you wish, a special salt solution. Then, you stand over the sink, tilt your head sideways, BREATHE THROUGH YOUR MOUTH and pour the solution down one nostril so it runs out the other nostril. If you can stand the feeling, it’s excellent to get rid of colds, allergies & clogged sinuses. I could never get the mouth breathing right & felt like I was inhaling sea water(because I was!).
