Quote of the Day

“The United States participated actively and effectively in the negotiation of the Convention . It marks a significant step in the development during this century of international measures against torture and other inhuman treatment or punishment. Ratification of the Convention by the United States will clearly express United States opposition to torture, an abhorrent practice unfortunately still prevalent in the world today.

The core provisions of the Convention establish a regime for international cooperation in the criminal prosecution of torturers relying on so-called ‘universal jurisdiction.’ Each State Party is required either to prosecute torturers who are found in its territory or to extradite them to other countries for prosecution.” —President Ronald Reagan, 1984

And don’t tell me it was a different time — before the evildoers. In 1984 there were more than 37,000 Soviet nuclear missiles aimed at the United States and our allies. This was a year after the Marine Corp barracks in Beirut was bombed by two suicide bombers, killing 241 American soldiers, 58 French soldiers and 6 civilians. An additional 75 people were injured.

When did Americans become a bunch of “bitter people who cling to their guns and religion and anti-immigrant sentiments”* and ignore laws and approve of fascist tactics like we haven’t seen since World War II?This is not the American I was born into. I almost wish for duck and cover to be back because even though we lived in fear of nuclear annihilation, we at least thought our fellow citizens were decent law-abiding people.* Bill Maher quote: “If conservatives don’t want to be seen as bitter people who cling to their guns and religion and anti-immigrant sentiments, they should stop being bitter and clinging to their guns, religion and anti-immigrant sentiments.”

Thank you for providing that quote. Nothing works better to refute Republican talking points then with their own ideological hero. Bravo!

pffft. Things are different now. The whole world changed after 9/11. America has never faced this kind of threat before! All St. Ron had to deal with was mutually assured destruction! We might get (gasp) anthrax!

Baby steps… Let’s have a bipartisan report in hand before we raise the issue of extradition.I’ve already drafted a letter to my representative in Congress. The first step is a House committee on torture — and that’s something we CAN get.
