‘Top of His Game’

Here’s a shocker. I agree with Pat Buchanan. The president was at the top of his game last night. The section about torture was particularly strong — especially the Churchill story which was an undeniably foolproof argument against torture, but it specifically painted the pro-torture people as cowards and sell-outs.

I was struck by an article that I was reading the other day talking about the fact that the British during World War II, when London was being bombed to smithereens, had 200 or so detainees. And Churchill said, “We don’t torture,” when the entire British — all of the British people were being subjected to unimaginable risk and threat.

And then the reason was that Churchill understood — you start taking shortcuts, over time, that corrodes what’s — what’s best in a people. It corrodes the character of a country.

I was also impressed with his state secrets response. In short, he said that there wasn’t any time — one week into his presidency — to establish a new process for dealing with state secrets and therefore they had to work under the Bush rules regarding national security. But, he said, Eric Holder and Greg Craig are working out a system whereby state secrets are redacted — “carved out” from classified documents, rather than having to appeal and stonewall these lawsuits (and transparency) due to various lines in the documents. We’ll see how this issue continues to play out.

foolproof.or so you might think.unless of course youre bill oreilly who thought it was a bad analogy since the british intelligence officials(MI-5?) are known to use “tough interrogation tactics”.oreilly and the “torture is the only way to keep us from being wiped off the face of the earth” crowd seem to believe that if you dont approve of torture then you love terrorists and believe we should give them back rubs and lemonade and ask pretty please tell us what we want to know, since obviously theres nothing in between.why do “tough interrogation tactics” have to include simulated drowning and smashing heads against walls?why are tough and smart mutually exclusive?

It was a powerful moment, highly persuasive. Shows why its important to have the president speak on the TV once in a while. Heard quite a bit of griping about the primetime presser, things like-that’s what the news channels are for etc. But as someone without those channels (and there are many like me) think it expands the reach of such comments like the ones on torture to the wider public.

This morning, on FOX, one commentator said that Obama was completely wrong and that the British did indeed torture their prisoners with sleep deprivation and “exposure to cold water” (whatever that means), under Churchill.

Blowhard Bill O’Reilly instantly pounced on this Churchill anecdote by Obama claiming it is not accurate. He promised to have a follow-up segment tonight about it. Talk about nit-picking. This was the biggest “flaw” he could find with the whole press conference.
