Very Serious Question

Why are people like Joe Scarborough in favor of government spending (not to mention torture) to “keep us safe” from terrorists, but they’re vocally opposed to government spending to keep us safe from diseases and sickness?

(On average, as many Americans will die from cancer in the next two days as were killed on 9/11. Around 40,000 deaths per month and more than half-a-million per year.)

Because adolescent boys like to see things blown up, not repaired.

Because Scarborough is a hack who believes only what will curry favor among the rabid.

Along those same lines I wonder why they believe Americans can do anything and do it better than anyone… except when it comes to building a health care system that works for every American.

It’s easy to be a hawk. Grandstanding, jingoism, bellicosity… these things require no real work or understanding. But the reward is great. It’s an easy way to get power — you don’t have to actually DO anything. Let’s see: read a bunch of nuanced, boring policy shit, talk to people, study VS just (have a bunch of other people’s kids) kill some brown people. Tough choice, eh?”Nuke ‘em” is both the ultimate in laziness and the ultimate in evil. Maybe there’s something to those 7 deadly sins…

I “heart” you, Kyle. PERFECT response!!And the rest of you hit the nail on the head, too.I’m a retired former school teacher living on a small SS income. Small savings/investment account. Only have Medicare A. Can’t even afford Medicare B. (It’s basically useless anyway).Even if I could afford health insurance, I couldn’t get it because I have a pre-existing condition. So here I sit. Alone. Ill. Can’t afford to go to a doctor even if I had one.I did try in January. I got to see a nurse practitioner who charged me $350 for really nothing. And she did not know what she was talking about.Yup. They see an ininsured senior coming, and no one gives a crap.Pardon my cynicism. My life wasn’t supposed to end like this.

bob…theres a simple answer to your question.in the land of rightwing tough guys, you must constantly be on the attack.big guns, big planesbig tanks etc…means youve got a big dick.launching preemptive strikes, ignoring handshakes from bad guys etc…its absolutely necessary to behave this way if you want to avoid being called a “pussy”.theres absolutely nothing worse-in wingnut bully fantasy land-than being thought of as some french-like environmental pussy.thats why liberals are all such pussies.nobody ever talked shit on someone who just happened to get sick.nobody except rush limbaugh, that is.

Amen, Bob. Either American lives are our priority or not.QT

Bob – It’s because explosions and scary slogans are more entertaining than people dying of cancer. And as 24hourjack pointed out, its probably also compensation for his lack of manhood.

My favorite sign from the “tea parties” was the one that read “CUT TAXES, NOT DEFENSE.” That pretty much sums up the “conservatives.”These people hate government spending, but only if it’s used to build things or help people. They’re fine with the government spending money to destroy things or kill people. They don’t want to pay for my healthcare or my kid’s education, but they have no problem paying for the torture and/or death of a few thousand brown people. They love their country, but don’t think they should have to pay for it. It’s the greatest country in the world, as long as it doesn’t cost them anything to keep it that way.Their epitome of what America is and should always be is the 1950s, a time of high taxes and lots and lots of government spending on schools and transportation infrastructure. The First, Fourth, Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments can be suspended or ignored or subordinated to other concerns in a time of national danger, but the Second Amendment can never, ever, ever be altered or go unenforced. They can do without free speech, due process, equal protection, and rights against unlawful search and seizure, but they absolutely can’t do without their guns.George Bush could have anally raped a Girl Scout on the White House lawn and they would still have worshipped him and the Third Greatest Human Being Ever to Walk the Earth, whereas Barack Obama so much as buys an ice cream cone and that somehow proves that he’s a dangerous Marxist Fascist Socialist Muslim Terrorist radical bent on destroying America.

This country spends more on health care and research than any country in the world. If another attack comes because we let up on our defence the next victum might be you or one of your family members.Radicals are not going to stop trying to kill us because Obama ask them not to

I can’t back up the statistic, but I have read that last year – pre-Recession – approximately 22,000 Americans were dying every year due to lack of health insurance. And last night on CSPAN the quote was that for every 1% increase in unemployment, another 1.2 million lose their health insurance, so you know that first figure isn’t going down. I’m one of the ones with the target on my face – in my 50s, no health insurance, modest pre-existing conditions, nothing fatal that I know of… but for how long?John Black, you don’t understand. We spend more but we don’t get more for it than other countries – we get less. Our life expectacy is lower and our infant mortality higher than most European countries. And take a hard look at the numbers above. Americans are dying NOW from lack of health care. When you say “the next victim may be one of you or your family members” please realize that phrase applies to people without health insurance. And unlike the speculative terrorism, it is happening now. Frankly, many people are more legitimately afraid of being uninsured with cancer than of some boogyman coming in the door.

And, of course, what makes that sign an even bigger joke is that the president cut taxes and increased defense spending.
