Justice Souter Is Retiring

Justice David Souter is planning to retire after nearly two decades on the Supreme Court, giving President Barack Obama his first chance to fill a vacancy on the high court.

The White House has been told that Souter will retire in June, when the court finishes its work for the summer, a source familiar with his plans said Thursday night. He almost certainly would remain on the bench until a successor is confirmed.

Exciting. But get ready for the establishment press to begin complaining about how the president should choose a bipartisan replacement. He won’t. He’ll attempt to replace Souter, who is a more liberal justice, with another liberal. But he’ll choose a younger liberal — which is crucial. Age is more important than anything else short of ideology. A younger justice in place of Souter could potentially secure that seat for a generation.

Sam Stein has possible nominees lined up here. Can you imagine if President Obama nominated an unqualified sycophant to replace Souter?

I just hope Obama understands eventually- 25 years or so- the rethugs will be back in power. So I hope he doesn’t go all BI PARTISAN on us and appoint some middle of the roader who he thinks the rethugs will vote for.Roe needs to be protected-plenty of trigger bills out there waiting for a case.

Michelle Malkin weighs in with teh crazy about inappropriate outbursts:

-Substantial questions also persist regarding Judge Sotomayor’s temperament and disposition to be a Supreme Court justice. Lawyers who have appeared before her have described her as a “bully” who “does not have a very good temperament,” and who “abuses lawyers” with “inappropriate outbursts.”

If Obama nominated someone of Harriet Myers’s caliber, the calls for impeachment from the right would make Clinton’s blowjob seem like nothing.

I got a chuckle out of the mention of Harriet Miers. I have such fond memories of that mess, because it demonstrated so vividly how utterly naive and clueless GWB was. He actually thought people would buy this, and even Ann Coulter thought it sucked.Haven’t turned on cable news today, because I’m already dreading hearing the windbags bleating about how Obama should appoint a centrist, “because America is center-right.” Bleah.

Reading about the Miers nomination, Harry Reid suggested her to GWB. WTF??Hopefully he was trying to sabotage him, but don’t think he’s that smart.
