My burning question of the day is since the the GOP are reduced to about 20%, and the wingnuts can only be about half of that at the most, why the fuck do the media keep giving all this attention to what can only be about 10% of the electorate?At this point, doesn’t the Green Party and Libertarian Party get an equal say?

I think it is SO low, disrespectful, racist, and demeaning for Pat Buchanan to suggest that President Obama is an “affirmative action” president. Where are the facts that prove this ridiculous assertion? And why does MSNBC insist on putting Pat Buchanan, a man who believes that slavery was the best thing that ever happened to African Americans”, on nearly every program to comment on an African American POTUS?Git, this is sorta the point I was trying to make last night. It hit me VERY early this morning that I was talking about newspapers and print journalism, and not news” shows. For example, Bill Kristol gets away with the most ridiculous lies on tee vee, but had to issue corrections for his NY Times column on a regular basis. IMO, a really good editor should’ve caught Kristol’s lies and lack of facts before the paper went to print.Also, I have a VERY funny story about something that got by me when I was the editor of the literary magazine my senior in high school. In fact, I had to apologize in front of the entire graduating class, and do detention before the SOB’s would even give me my diploma.

@emisque: so true. this whole fair and balanced thing has gone too far. 20% doesn’t balance out 80% and should not be given equal weight.Since the torture “debate” is with us to stay, can we please re-frame it (David Shuster, I’m talking to you. At the moment)? Whether or not it worked, whether information was gleaned, whether it was effective is irrelevant. If you’re married and want to be single, killing your spouse is an effective way of becoming so. It will work. It is also illegal. That is the point that needs to be made. What if you have the wrong guy, a ticking time bomb, and you torture the guy? He will give you a bunch of wrong information just to get you to stop. We got a bunch of incorrect info by torturing people. It’s what helped get us into Iraq.

Those have got to be some of the stupidest newspaper men ever. Not getting the historical reference? Even if you don’t know your presidential history and don’t know that Garfield and McKinley were assassinated, don’t you think they’d try to figure out the common thread between Lincoln and Kennedy? BC -They took the money, they ran the ad. I don’t believe for a moment that no one recognized what those four presidents had in common. They didn’t think anyone would care.They came up with the bullshit story that the person taking the ad didn’t realize the significance of those four presidents after they were swamped with a avalanche of complaints.It’s a right wing newspaper. They probably thought all their readers would cheer.

I’ll take the most logical explanation for the “assassinate Obama” ad, knowing the news biz the way I do. And my explanation is pretty close to Vera’s: this is what happens when you rate ad creators at $8 an hour. And I am not making this up. Most small newspapers are understaffed by overworked and underpaid people with student loans to pay off for their very un-remunerative degrees. The prepress departments at most minor dailies have become sweatshops of the worst order, where no one is rewarded for challenging this kind of crap.

I agree Matt. Your description is better than mine. They took the money and ran the ad. That’s their job. The ad had no profanity or other content that policy would have prohibited so the ad ran.

The ad was run in the “personal” section of the classifieds. If anyone has ever placed an ad with a newspaper you would know that these people are minimum wage type employees, there isn’t a lot of deep thought here, it’s all worker bees just doing their jobs.If this was put in the paper like a regular business ad, where it’s much more complex, I think the argument could be made they should have caught it. A minimum wage earner working the personal classifieds- I can fully see how that could slip by this entry level type of employee.I think we cut give that entry level person the benefit of the doubt here.
