Quote of the Day

“I have opposed the creation of such a Commission [to investigate torture] because I believe that our existing democratic institutions are strong enough to deliver accountability. The Congress can review abuses of our values, and there are ongoing inquiries by the Congress into matters like enhanced interrogation techniques. The Department of Justice and our courts can work through and punish any violations of our laws.” —President Obama outlining how government investigations and prosecutions of torturers might take place

I do believe that is the money shot.. I thought that was great.

“I do believe that is the money shot”OMG, but that was funny!Anyway, I think the highlighted point is exactly what you mentioned yesterday, I think it was, Bob. Whether the president agrees or not, it ain’t HIS call. It’s up to the DoJ to decide.

  • http://annette-justmylittlepieceoftheworld.blogspot.com/ Annette

Not sure why you thought that was funny, but ok..I thought it was a really great comment that he made.. I think it should lay to rest all the wonder that people have as to whether the President supports trials.

Well, the president did sort of ejaculate those three sentences so it was, indeed, the money shot. But seriously, that part jumped out at me during the speech, and when Bob posted the text of the speech I checked to see that I heard it correctly. We have to apply pressure to congress letting them know that we want an investigation of war crimes.

I agree.. we have to keep pushing them… I plan on sending an email to my Sen. McCaskill tonight anyway.. I want to ask her why the hell she voted against the money for GitMo too..She’s got some splainin’ to do..

Git, I think you just said what more bloggers need to say.

  • http://cousinavi.wordpress.com cousinavi

The first hint of this came the other day, after the meeting with the human rights groups immediately preceding word that Gitmo detainees would be tried in NYC…One of those interviewed said that the President stated something like “We will not be investigating or prosecuting blah blah…” but the tell was that (according to the story) as he spoke those words he looked directly at Eric Holder.I had the impression when I read the account that “We” had been employed in just that way – the Executive Branch (read the White House)…not at all in terms of ‘there will be no prosecutions’.Who’ll give me odds? I’m in a bettin’ mood…Cheney under indictment within 6 months of the 2010 elections. Gimme odds.

An independent DoJ? But the yes men over the last eight years worked out so well for the country.

I am worried about all those people who were hired at DoJ by the previous administration that are still there. How will they effect an investigation?

  • http://arkytek.blogspot.com/ ∇•B=0  Silly Ratfaced Git  ∇•D=ρ

cousinavi -I think there is probably a 70% chance that Cheney will be under idictment within 6 months of the 2010 elections. I give that same chance that Gonzoles, Bybee, and Yoo (at least) will be with him. Particularly Gonzo. The EITs started six months before any of the memos were written on Gonzo’s word alone. He was White House Counsel at the time. Bybee and Yoo basically wrote up Gonzo’s verbal authorizations.

Git, what’re your sources? Not challenging, just requesting…

I saw (have it muted) Ari Shapiro, from NPR, on Rachel talking about it. (Gonzales ok’d torture before DoJ)

  • Mike

How bout the over under of unemployment being up or down in 6 months. I understand principle, but I thought this administration wasn’t about looking into the past, and “moving forward.”What a joke. How about war crimes committed during WWII during the firebomb raids of japan. Or this Churchill commanded fleet of war planes firebombing innocent civilians…http://www.scribd.com/doc/15097857/The-Firebombing-of-Dresden-Writtenif you want a war crime…this guy and pete rose don’t deserve a spot in the hall of fame. But torture, geez…

Thanks Vera, I just now noticed Matt’s question. We have been getting one story after another shoing the blatant criminality of the behavior of the Bush White House. This will continue. We still haven’t seen the results of the DoJ politically motivated Attorney firings. Rove will be testifying to that shortly. He will lie. He will get caught lying. It will be ugly.As the evidence of the criminal activity stacks up deeper and deeper it will reach the depth needed to finally trigger the prosecutions that should have already been triggered.I really think an indictment of Teh Dick&trade might come before the 2010 election. If it is too close to the election, they wil postpone until after.Write your congress-critters demanding an investigation.

Mike -Unlike republicans, I expect everyone to obey the law. All laws. Not just the ones that aren’t inconvenient.Torture is a criminal act. The people ordering the torture belong in prison. Period.Dick Cheney does not get a ‘get out of jail’ card just because he was once Vice President. I want his new name to be Vice President Bubba’s Bitch.

  • http://arkytek.blogspot.com/ ∇•B=0  Silly Ratfaced Git  ∇•D=ρ

The Bush Administration was a criminal conspiracy implementing the plan made by PNAC to raid the treasury and use the government apparatus to castrate their political opponents. The Republican Party has ZERO CREDIBILITY on any issue facing America today. They have a track record of proven massive incompetence. US War Criminals – The Bush Lies Montage

  • http://arkytek.blogspot.com/ ∇•B=0  Silly Ratfaced Git  ∇•D=ρ

For the people that still think that waterboarding is not torture so the Bush Administration did nothing wrong and was only keeping us safe.HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT MURDER AND UNLAWFUL DEATH.Nearly 100 detainees were murdered or killed. Others ‘disappeared.’ Thirty-Four detainees were clearly murdered by strangulation, beaten to death, or kicked to death. This was done to “keep us safe.”The Bush Administration are clearly war criminals. This sounds more and more like the Gestapo in operation. Details at BuzzFlash.I want to see Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gonzales, Bybee and Yoo in prison where these criminals belong. There is no doubt that these people are dangerous criminals.

We have to apply pressure to congress letting them know that we want an investigation of war crimes.

You can bet next month’s paycheck that there will be polling on this one. I wonder…how many really DO want an investigation, and how many don’t want to tie our Congress up in this. This is the same Congress that thinks its purview is steroids in baseball, and the College Football BCS system. What with all the declarations that 2008 was the international year of the reefer, and Brett Favre days and whatnot, there’s simply no time on the schedule for real work.
