someone (hint, hint) needs to point to them that when Souter first sat on the SCOTUS, he was considered a conservative – voted with Rehnquist most of the time. It was only with the additions of the wingnuts – Thomas, Scalia, et al – that Souter shifted to the left.

well that was very christ like of him. (insert extremely exaggerated eye roll here)

I have no words.Well, maybe just a few.Just when I think the desperate, bloviating, tactless, hopeless, pathetic Reich-wingers can’t lower themselves any farther, they continue to amaze and surprise. And go lower. Is there no bottom for these hate-mongers?Probably not.I did throw up in my mouth a little when I read that comment re: Souter.

Hey, Pat Robertson and his fleeced flock were praying for the demise of liberal, activist, supreme court justices so tater could replace them with good hay-suse loving ideologues.

I don’t really care what sister fucking knuckle dragging inbred morons have to say on political issues. I’ll listen to them play the banjo, but that’s about it.They have already proven, like Pat Robertson, that they don’t understand that your religion has nothing to do with the legal system. Law is a self contained system and laws interpretation does not changed based on religious ideology since religion is irrelevant to the legal system. Murder is murder regardless of whether or not one believes in a God, Flying Spaghetti Monster, or Invisible Pink Unicorn. These inbred crackers are a hazard to themselves and others.

That’s just uncalled for, I don’t care what your politics are.

That comment reeks of projection …

Uncalled for? These are the Red State folks we’re talking about. I’d say Git went gently.

ceu is correct as to where this anger comes from (though I would point out that Scalia was on the Court several years before Souter). They’re mad because Souter was nominated by a republican, but ended up voting like a sensible human being.I often wonder just how different this country might be today if Souter and Stevens didn’t have the intelligence (and the balls) to disregard the fact that they were nominated by republicans, and vote with the liberal side of the court. If those two voted the way Ford and Bush 1.0 thought they would vote, a HUGE chunk of cases would have been decided by 7 hardcore conservatives and 2 liberals. Just off the top of my head…Casey v. Planned Parenthood, instead of modifying Roe v. Wade, would have almost certainly overturned it. Yikes.I’m sad to see Souter go. He was one of the good ones, and did this country a big favor by taking the turn that he did. It’s no surprise though – after sitting through the atrocity of Bush v. Gore, I think the only reason he stayed on the Court was so that a Democrat could pick his replacement. And kudos to him for doing so.Just based on the fact that the conservatives are already ramping up attacks on Sotomayor, my money is on her as the replacement. I’d prefer to see Obama pick someone even further to the left (my understanding is that she’s pretty liberal, but not to the extent that Roberts and Alito are conservative). She’s probably a smart pick right now though – it’ll be tough for conservatives to argue against a hispanic woman without looking like the assholes that they are. He will almost certainly have another pick coming up shortly (Stevens is nearing 90), and he’ll be able to pick somebody as liberal as he pleases after the Democrats expand their majority in 2010.
