Star Trek Review Thread

Post your reviews here, but please clearly mark your spoilers.

Simply put, it made all of the previous movies seem overly serious, stuffy and quaint. A couple of spoilers after the jump…

Some random observations… SPOILERS!-Mr. Scott’s little alien sidekick made me crack up.-Chekov gets a ton of dialogue. More than Koenig ever got in any of the movies.-Karl Urban as McCoy stole the movie. The sequence with McCoy, Kirk and the medication side effects was hysterical.-At the end, when Kirk struts onto the bridge and blurts out “Bones!” in a perfect Shatner voice, it underscored how perfectly Abrams melded the original series with the reboot.-The Sulu sword fight was awesome.-I don’t think Bruce Greenwood is capable of a bad performance in anything.-The new warp speed effect/sound was amazing. For the first time ever in a Star Trek movie or show, they really made space travel seem more dangerous and real. Sort of illustrating McCoy’s warning about how space is “danger and disease wrapped in darkness.” It really was.END SPOILERS

THERE BE SPOILERS HERE:I loved, loved, loved this movie! It was my Mother’s Day present to myself, so I dragged my 8-year old son with me. This is how Trekkies are born, kids. His favorite part was Scotty’s little alien sidekick, too. When the movie first started, I was all disappointed that they didn’t use the Star Trek theme song. But when it’s brought in at the end, with all of the characters where they are supposed to be – it was absolutely perfect.Spock’s “I have been, and always shall be, your friend” made me get a little weepy.McCoy was brilliant. They captured all of his delightful crankiness. Sulu was wonderful, too. I loved his youthful bravado and touch of cockiness, which was subtly done. They need more Spock eyebrow lifting – I only caught one. Other than that, Spock was great. Physically, the likeness between Leonard Nimoy and Zach Quinto is striking, and Quinto really adds a depth to the character which wasn’t there before.I was wondering how they would make the movie so they could continue from this point without esentially remaking old Star Trek episodes, and I think they’ve done that. They really did preserve so much of the original series, and I can’t wait to see future movies!

I went to see the movie opening night with a bunch of my fencer friends. Needless to say, the “what kind of combat training do you have?” exchange left them rolling on the floor (especially those that saw the fencing episode they referenced). Also, to hell with the even/odd rule.

Captain! There be spoilers here!I love what one reviewer said, something like “Apologies to William Shatner, but it’s been a long time since James T. Kirk was this sexy.” A-very-men.I also got a kick out of the “reveal” as to how Doctor McCoy got the nickname “Bones” — not the way most everybody thought and MUCH funnier!!In the audience where we saw the flick, the moment that Nimoy turned around, EVERYone gasped and/or sighed… hello again, old friend :-) Old Spock’s final salute to Young Spock was sweet, funny, perfect.

Oh, AND! As we entered the theatre, some kid behind us said “dang, I wore my special Star Trek t-shirt, and just now remembered that it glows in the dark.” Ha!!I started to look for him in the 500-seat theatre but the movie started and that was the end of that.

Now, if only J.J. Abrams would reboot Wolverine, X-Men Origins…

I still haven’t had time to do a review but some thoughts (and mild spoilers!)spoilersOk – so unlike Bob, I thought Scotty’s sidekick was pointless and stupid. Scotty, however, was delightful. Especially liked his one track mindedness. :) A lot of the movie hangs together only on aggressive suspension of disbelief. For a sci-fi movie, that’s less than ideal. That said, I thought it was brilliant anyway. As a big-screen spectacle, it got the job done – breathing needed life into the ailing franchise, and the characters (and the ship!!!) were good enough nods to the original in almost all instances to make any fan smile. In 2011, 2012 at the latest – I hope we get a tv series that gives the nuance, philosophy, and somewhat reasonable science that was supplanted by big-screen ACTION!QT

At the end, when Kirk comes on to the bridge as a full-fledged captain, he’s moved from the youthful cockiness right into a Shatneresque self-regard. Perfect!Very believable characters.I love how Kirk never once won a fight — he was getting his ass kicked all over the place and kept his cockiness.Nice to see the original series’ sexiness (How about that uniform on Uhura?) come back. Yay skirts on chicks!

**SPOILER****SPOILER**It was amazing. I am an uber nerd when it comes to Star Trek. Over a TB of Trek on my hard drive, I can call up any episode, anytime. The biggest problem I was worried about was that I knew the time line was gonna shift… Thankfully Spock was there to sign off on this new time line, and it seems ok. I couldn’t find anything to be upset about — well, one thing. Goddamn movie made me BaaaAAw in the very beginning because I just had a baby (well wife did) and Kirk Sr. doing what he did just made tears roll down my face. But over all an amazing “re-imagination”as Abrams put it. And kudos to having ILM do the CGI.. fucking amazing.

Really, really disliked this movie – the blurry action, the ships being splintered with explosions (but still retaining air and gravity), the fistfights where we hear endless lethal body blows but the hero only gets a scuffed cheek, the substitution of old lines for real characterization… the insertion of Star Wars bar types everywhere (wasn’t original Spock’s presence in Starfleet as a half-human highly unusual?)… the Enterprise bridge looking like an overlit mall makeup counter… engineering looking like a brewery… but mostly the complete lack of sustained characterization, dialogue and intelligent behavior from almost everyone. Pluses: Bruce Greenwood as a warm and humane Pike, an engaging and talented Chekhov, a manic and entertaining Scotty… and a reasonable facsimile of a young Spock by Zack Quinto. Sorry, but I found young Kirk to be neither attractive nor remotely appealing in his belligerant brat personna and could not imagine him evolving into a legend. Last but not least, as someone who loves to hear English spoken by people who appreciate the language, I really miss the Shakespearean-trained voices – and stage presence – of classic Trek. Richardo Montalban as Khan – or Marc Alaimo as Gul Dukat – could deliver more shivers in one line than all the Romulans in this film put together.

Loved the movie…Only one complaint: Eric Bana as Nero. I’ve not seen a single Eric Bana movie where he has made any real character impact. He’s flat on almost every level. Perhaps he’s Australia’s Keanu Reeves. No, he’s not that bad.As a side, I’ve read that Keanu is playing the lead in a new Jekyll & Hyde adaptation…I don’t really see where he can pull off two personas when he barely has one…*Sigh*

Awesome. We really enjoyed it. And apologies to both William Shatner and to guest, but William Shatner was NEVER that hot. His character was seriously sex addicted, of course, but it was Leonard Nimoy who was the sex god to most of us earth girls. This time it appears to be the other way around.I didn’t care that much for the blurry action shots either, but judging by the approximately 17 previews for other sci-fi action films before the show that seems to be the way it’s done now. Despite the slight headache from the camera work I can’t wait until it comes out on DVD so I can see it again.Loved Scotty and his little sidekick, too.

Loved it.Did anyone else catch the Star Trek: Enterprise reference? Admiral Archer and his beagle…

Just got back from seeing it on the IMAX screen. Good flick with lots of action and just the right amount of nods to the past. And without giving anything away . . . WAY TO GO MR. SPOCK . . . you have good taste!

  • Guest (again 2)

I’ve been thinking about this film all day (it has STUCK with me and my sweety since yesterday), and we both agree that the one Fail! we both noticed was that the villian “Nero” wasn’t at all compelling or even interesting or scary… Did anyone else here have that experience? The plot line presented Nero as the bad guy, but when I needed to pee somewhere around the middle of the film, and he showed up to make some kinda speech, I exited for 1/2 minute and learned later that I hadn’t missed anything. He didn’t seem scary at all, just a required plot point-character.

I loved the movie. I agree to a point on the Eric Bana criticisms. I think this was more a script thing than it was him. It was just hard to believe that he could keep his crew following his psychotic plan for 25 years, they would have to be pretty committed.I am 26, and was never a huge Star Trek fan. I have watched some of the movies, and some of the shows, and enjoyed them.I can tell you right now, my generation is going to love this movie and beg for more just like it.My 24 year old cousin and I went and as soon as the credits were over we wanted to know when the next movie comes out.Next up… Terminator, Salvation.

  • Frateloder

Hopefully this will end up being like “Batman Begins” – a good starter that is followed by a masterpiece.

You’re reading a review thread, and I have to warn you if there might be spoilers? Ok. There might be spoilers.I really enjoyed the movie, although I’m a little concerned that the Trek franchise might get reduced to a biennial mindless action flick. I want Trek to be somewhat cereberal, dare I say even a bit stuffy at times.I didn’t know anything about the movie, so I nearly vomited when I realized time travel was involved. I recognize that they used it to wipe the slate clean so Trekkies wouldn’t bitch about future movies. But, please – I’m on my knees typing right now – please stop it with the time travel.

Disagree. Nemesis and First Contact were goddamn awesome.”They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn HERE! THIS FAR NO FUTHER! And I will make them pay for what they’ve done!”New movie is good, but most of the Next Gen stuff was really good too, esp Nemesis. It is a bit more industrial/hollywood though, good for people who aren’t as big of fans of the series.

Loved this movie. I saw the first showing on Thursday and again a few hours ago. I’ve followed Trek for a very long time and thought that everything was done wonderfully. I can’t wait to take my kids to see it next weekend.*Spoiler Alert*I also caught the Archer/beagle reference as well as the Cloverfield reference where Uhura orders the Slusho drink. Apparently, there were a couple, more subtle, references as well…trekmovie.comBrilliant!
