Super Stupid

Defending his simultaneously stupid and racist comment about how black people are skewing the president’s approval numbers, Byron York entirely misses the point:

I wrote that citing Obama’s “sky-high ratings among African-Americans make some of his positions appear a bit more popular overall than they actually are.” I thought the word “overall” conveyed the idea that there was a difference between the total job-approval number and the complexities of opinion of Obama on various issues. Maybe “across-the-board” would have been better than “overall,” …

Nah. It wouldn’t have been. “Overall” and “across the board” are basically the same and his idiotic point remains: President Obama is popular because he’s black and so the black people are artificially inflating his numbers. And, as I wrote Wednesday night, this from a guy who never once wrote that Bush’s numbers were skewed by evangelicals. Or Republicans. Or white people.

Byron is a wrong wing elitist. His point is best understood when it is stated plainly without all of the weasel words that he uses to make it seem reasonable. Here is what he is really saying:Polls should weight the results obtained from whtie republicans twice the weight of everyone else since their opinions are more correct than anyone else’s.Everyone should realize that wrong wingers are never wrong and know better what is best for everyone. Do not question our opinion, it is the correct one.Polls that do not represent our opinion as the highest result are obviously wrong. When we want *your* opinion, we will give it to you.Byron York – Just another Unamerican Authoritarian.

Yeah, because African-Americans being favorable towards Obama because they are mostly Democrats! has nothing to do with it either. What an idiot.

  • ElMystico

Yeah, Obama has an 80% approval rating among African American’s. Joe Biden’s got an 81%, according to Byron, so clearly, Joe’s an extra 1% black than Barack. Media Matters (I think( also pointed out that Kay Hagan won more of the black vote in NC than Barack did nationally so um… Apparently Kay Hagan is the blackest member of the Senate.(Roland Burris received 0% of the black vote getting into the senate, so he is 0% black, 100% blago)It’s called Mathematics!

Obama is not black. He is mulatto. As probably are a great many of us who don’t even know it.

“And, as I wrote Wednesday night, this from a guy who never once wrote that Bush’s numbers were skewed by evangelicals. Or Republicans. Or white people.”I understand your point, Bob, and I don’t completely disagree with you, but I do think there could very well be a distinct boost (however small) in the psychology among blacks overwhelmingly supporting a FIRST black president by default, compared to whites overwhelmingly supporting a FOURTY-THIRD white president by default. Also, I don’t think evangelicals are a good counter-example, because having Bush in office wasn’t a “first” for them, so he probably wouldn’t have had the same magnitude of effect. On your third example, regarding Republicans supporting Bush more by default, that gets balanced out by Democrats supporting Obama more by default. All of this being said, any effect of Obama getting a boost in ratings by being a first for the black community is definitely interesting from an academic perspective, but is really lame to be used in a political perspective by York.

Why can’t conservative columnist at least TRY to understand racism? It’s apparent we are dealing with the unveiling of their segregationists and elitists agenda. Oh wait. We already knew that some 200 years ago.

  • Lexaburn

By his logic, he could explain how being “obtuse” is different from being “stupid” because the former conveys erudition.Yeah, the dude is a straight-up square.Oh, excuse me.He’s an out-of-touch con-servative knave.

  • Sierradrinker

Not all conservatives are racist, just the ones who are loud and obnoxious enough to be heard.

Obama is not black. He is mulatto. As probably are a great many of us who don’t even know it.

It’s called the 1% rule. Show me a racist who shouts he’s 50% white. So what you’re saying is that because he’s 50% black and 505 white, he’s not black? I’ve heard this kind of thing before. I don’t speak with an accent therefore I’m not really Hispanic.

  • gypsy

damn it carl…you don’t have an accent?! it’s like i don’t even know you. ;) also, i know one portuguese/black person who doesn’t have a problem with the word mulatto but the rest of my mixed race friends would beat your ass if you called them that. just fyi girl du jour.

It’s astounding to me that York didn’t simply apologize instead of whining that he’s misunderstood. The racism of his original text is like a klieg light! This all reminds me of Bob’s theory that the MSM treats Republicans as the “control group” and Democrats as the “experimental group.” It certainly shows up in York’s article, which treats GOP voters as normal and Democratic voters as a group that must be analyzed, parsed, and dissected, with the goal of proving that Obama’s popularity is sort of mirage.

  • GItheJOE

    >>>Not all conservatives are racist, just the ones who are loud and obnoxious enough to be heard.Agreed, the most southern, older, former or current Klansmen, keep their racism to a low whisper. Not saying that there isn’t racism above the Mason Dixon Line, but with 7% of the population being black in most rural areas, our racists are the ones SCREAMING ABOUT HOW RACIST THEY ARE!!!

Mulatto is a Pepperidge Farm cookie? Funny, that word always makes me think about a really good cup of coffee. A cookie sounds delicious too.

Funny, that word always makes me think about a really good cup of coffee.

I just got a Mulatto coffee from Starbucks. 50% black coffee, 50% milk. Add brown sugar if you like your Mulatto sweet.
