Hang on tight. This is quite possibly the dumbest attack against anyone ever. Conservative economist Greg Mankiw:

Apparently, the new Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is an example of the latter. The Washington Post reports that the 54-year-old Sotomayer has a $179,500 yearly salary but

On her financial disclosure report for 2007, she said her only financial holdings were a Citibank checking and savings account, worth $50,000 to $115,000 combined. During the previous four years, the money in the accounts at some points was listed as low as $30,000.

My grandmother would have been shocked and appalled to see someone who makes so much save so little.

Well, then. Withdraw! Withdraw! Or as Nate Silver wrote:

Grandmother of World’s 23rd Best Economist Posthumously Offended by Sonia Sotomayor’s Spending Habits; Will Obama Withdraw Nomination?

(And no, Mankiw is not the same guy who was waterboared the other day.)

    I think this speaks volumes about the GOP. It has been said that the GOP is the wealthy party. Most Americans would love to have that kind of money in their savings and checking accounts. I believe a blogger on this site once showed all of us his personal accounts. This is a tough time and when the country has recently had a NEGATIVE SAVINGS rating, I believe this makes her more closely aligned with the majority of Americans.

    The next iteration of Teh Stupid™ will be upon us by day’s end, which will be the argument that Sotomayor’s mother, a nurse at a methadone clinic, was a drug pusher.

    And when that doesn’t work, as we all know it will not, they will cite Ford v. McGinnis and Salahuddin v. Mead to claim she’s a secret Muslim with an affinity for prisoners (watch out, Gitmo detainees!).

    I have news for Mankiw, the country’s negative savings rate means people who make far more than the Judge have no savings.At one time I had a job where I knew the finances of various corporate executives. I was surprised that people making anywhere from $500,000 to $1,000,000 a year had NO savings and no assets other than their home. They spent all their money, too.It does seem unfortunate to me that people making lots of money don’t get that no matter how much money they make, if they spend all their money, they still have no money. But it doesn’t mean they are bad people or unqualified for their job.

    Does Mankiw live in NYC?180k/yr may be a lot in Peoria, it isn’t really a fabulous salary in NYC. It’s a comfortable salary, but it’s far from fabulous.
