The Press, Pelosi and Torture

The most striking aspect of the establishment media coverage (mainly cable news) of the Pelosi situation is that it mirrors the ridiculous coverage we saw during the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. Rather than examining the very serious facts and fallacies, more attention is being given to sideshow distractions and superficial “did they make their case” banter.

The Republicans dictated the terms of the debate back then, and they appear to be doing so now. But this time, it’s clear that both factions — the establishment media and the Republicans — are clearly in CYA mode. If the discussion moves to the Torture-for-War nexus, then we have to discuss the run-up to the war which will invariably include talk about how the press failed to expose the problems with the the plans for invasion.

But instead of making up for those pre-war failures, the establishment media is repeating the same behavior.

In particular, it’s glaringly awkward to watch MSNBC during the morning and daytime as they attempt to turn this Pelosi-Panetta news into a sequel to their treatment of the Democratic primary campaign. You know, turning a serious debate into a “He Said, She Said” smackdown.

It reeks of desperation — desperation to avoid the real issue — and amplifies many of the negative observations we’ve all made about the awful state of television news reporting.

Adding… Yglesias wrote an excellent piece about how the GOP’s Pelosi focus is bound to backfire on them.

    She’s lying. Deal with it.

  • ceu

how do you know, nitesurfer?Seriously. And if she is, is Bob Graham lying, too?

  • ceu

Adding – the discussion really needs to be focused on the torture rather than on one person whom we know didn’t order the torture of anyone.

What I would like to know is why Pelosi is on the hotseat, but the CIA doesn’t appear to be. There are 2 sides to this story. Frankly, Pelosi has more credibility than the CIA does!

It’s more disturbing to me that when one side comes under attack they will rally around this “distraction!” cry.Throw all of the guilty bastards out. As I wrote, she will either attempt to impede further investigations about the matter or Obama will feel apphrehensive about pressing the matter further because she was involved with it.Let’s get a new crew. Stop the defense.

    *apprehensive

I loved thisI don’t see how Pelosi “was involved with it.” I don’t like her much, but I can’t see how any of the torture can be laid at her feet.

She has already stated very clearly more than once that she welcomes an investigation. Obame won’t decide, Holder will. The TV media is actually telling lies about the Pelosi story. I wonder why they are doing that.Penetta said that it is not CIA’s policy to lie to congress. ABC reported that as “Penetta called Nancy Pelosi a liar.” Talk about rampant propaganda. Be very careful where you get your news. The MSM is untrustworthy. We know this from the way they covered the lead up to the Iraq invasion. Trust them at your own peril. They’ll talk you into cutting your own throat if they’ll make a buck off it.

“She has already stated very clearly more than once that she welcomes an investigation.”They all say that…. sucker.

Obame won’t decide, Holder will.___________You’re kidding, right? To whom is Holder answerable? He doesn’t wipe his ass without the president’s permission.Jesus christ, the naievete’….

Penetta said that it is not CIA’s policy to lie to congress.I give you Richard Helms (former director of the CIA, convicted of lying to Congress in 1977 re: the overthrow of Allende, who was replaced by Augusto Pinochet) and Bill Casey ( former director of the CIA who lied to Congress about selling arms to Iran & using the proceeds to fund the Contras in Nicaragua)

just listened to Jesse Ventura say that they won’t have the investigations because both sides are guilty”They’re lucky I’m not president. I would get them all.”Evening awesome.

ceu -Penetta said “It is not the CIA’s policy to lie to congress.”Those are weasel words. It’s not the policy to lie, but sometimes we do. Good luck telling which time this is. We only lie when we really have to. It’s not our policy to lie.

I know one thing: half the people talking up Ventura now probly wouldn’t vote for him if he did run, nor would they expect him to win. This whole debacle is rife with GOP deviation.Since we’re on the subject of “The Body,” did any of you see his Vannity appearance? Well, if you did, you’d have seen Vannity relying on the very same debunked talking points he regurgitates each and every time someone challenges him (an easy task). It’s similar to how the swine media and the Republicons are carrying on now. They carry on like dishonest brats because they know no one will lift a finger to smack their lips, and if they did, the smacker would be the one in trouble.Nowadays, it appears that the only tactic the GOP relies on is not actually doing anything beneficial for the country, but deluding itself into silly games of Hot Potato and Chicken with Democrats. The stubborn bastards are like Vaudeville performers, some never caring how silly they appear as long as their audience is entertained. Make ‘em laugh and all that. The “both sides are guilty” bullshit goes both ways, so as the supposedly guilty Dems kick even more ass next year, the even guiltier Republicons will have to engage in five more “rebranding” efforts to go along with the six to eight they’ve committed to since late ’05, if two quarters of the party isn’t seeking retirement or in jail.Taunt like simpletons now, taunters.

“They all say that…. sucker.”Yeah, and “they all say” investigating is completely unnecessary, too.
