The Torture Party

When the chips are down and we’re under duress, our character is tested. Either we’re strong and sensible — sometimes heroic — or we’re weak and crazy, abandoning our values.

The current Republican predicament is revealing for many reasons, but one thing we know for sure is this: in their time of crisis, they’ve become the Torture Party (among other things). I can’t imagine that history will be kind to them for this.

As for Coulter in this video, if the CIA’s torture techniques were nothing more than fraternity hazings or punishments for a small child, how could they possibly be effective? Either they’re fun and games, or they’re harsh enough so as to get detainees to sell-out their cohorts and, as Cheney and Coulter and Scarborough claim, reveal terrorist plots in the 11th hour. They can’t be both.

Adding… Another twisted Coulter and Hannity video here. It’s worth watching simply because it’s so scattershot. In one short video, Coulter calls the techniques “wussy stuff” then later “torture” then compares the techniques to amusement park attractions.

So the techniques they’re telling us are vital to national security — either we do these things or we die — are actually nothing more than a log flume ride? All that stands between us and death at the hands of a terrorist attack is a Fisher-Price toy? By downplaying the harshness of the CIA’s torture techniques, they’re negating their own efficacy argument.

I’m convinced that this makes sense to them by implying that terrorists are weak enough to break under the stress of something as harmless as a frat hazing

So if they did these things to small children, in order to get the parents to come out of hiding or find out where KSM was, so they used torture on the children of abu Zubayda to try to get him to tell them where he was.. what do they call that? Is that still “punishment for a small child” or “child’s play” as I saw it termed in another piece? As a mother it made me ill reading it.. literally ill, what they did to those children, just to try to get to the parents. I don’t know how any parent could read or see the pictures and stand that. This is what those monsters did and it needs to be on the front pages of every paper in this country. Hopefully, when the new pictures come out there will be more in them, and the people in this country will finally get angry enough, they will start screaming for something to be done.

Perhaps they know that THEY are so weak willed that they’d spill the beans if subjected to “wussy stuff”?

Related to the this topic and the party of no real morals, any one who hasn’t read Greenwald’s post from yesterday should take a look. The title: Ronald Reagan: vengeful, score-settling, Hard Left ideologue

Annette, your comment about their children and a previous post Bob put up about that article regarding how churchgoers are more likely to support torture, reminds me of an incident with my own kids. There is an evangelical megachurch here called Church on the Move that our kids went to with their cousins and some friends. The was when they and their cousins were 3-6 years old. They were shown videos of hell and the atrocities of people sent there, obviously to scare them. Frankly, to that young of a mind, it is blatant torture becasue it is terrifying. But worse, they were then explicitly told that because their parents weren’t at church with them, weren’t believers, were members of other religions, gay, etc., that this was the fate that awaited their parents. That, in my estimation, is torture and child abuse as well. And the mere idea of a hell is just one reason I am atheist. Can you post a link to articles about what was done to KSM and Zubayda’s children? I admit I wasn’t aware they had been “questioned”.

Yeah, I know I did a post on my blog.. let me see if I can find where I got the story.. I want to say it was from Raw Story but I am not sure..

I found at TPC, Annette, and JM. It includes links to other stories & this quote:“The Pakistani guards told my son that the boys were kept in a separate area upstairs and were denied food and water by other guards,” the statement read. “They were also mentally tortured by having ants or other creatures put on their legs to scare them and get them to say where their father was hiding.”

I don’t care how hard hearted you are .. you can’t be that cold. Can you??

I can’t…no one I know can. And it was done in our names. There MUST be investigations & prosecutions. This can never be allowed to happen again. EVER.

  • http://annette-justmylittlepieceoftheworld.blogspot.com/ Annette

I agree.. that’s why I feel there must be prosecutions.. that’s why this is mostly what I have been blogging about for 4 months.. it is something that has to be documented, it has to be out in the open, it has to be talked about. Even though it is sickening, it is disheartening, and I often have to just walk away from the computer, it really has to be told.I also think Pres. Obama is doing this in the only way he can. He is releasing these documents and these photos, so that it looks like he is being forced to, and is holding himself back from the entire process as he must.If he comes out and says that Bush & Co. were criminals and need to be prosecuted then he has just crossed from being the Executive Branch of the Government to being in the Judicial Branch.. and he can’t do that.He knows that. That’s why he is stepping back away.. and handing it off to Holder.. But we must hold his feet and Holders feet to the fire on this. That’s why I blog about it, that’s why I talk about it.. It’s why I make my daughter angry every once in a while, because she is one of those who thinks Bush did everything right and is a denier of the truth..

Another thing we have to remember.. It is coming out now, it was not employees of the CIA nor was it for the most part soldiers who did this… it was private contractors who were hired by Rumsfeld and paid through the CIA who did these things. That is why Pres. Obama said No one at the CIA would be punished.. Remember he always has more information than we do.

Someone last night at GDAB commented that there will be no prosecutions on this. I let it go uncorrected at the time.People that do not read blogs and news in Europe have no idea the level of outrage against the BushCo torture policies. They have been talking about this for years now (unlike the U.S. were we stood around looking at the ceiling and whistling while this was going on). You have no idea of the level of outrage they have over the evidence that has been released recently. The Europeans are very patiently waiting to see if we do the right thing and bring these criminals to justice. If we do not, they will hold us to our treaty obligations.I am quite convinced that there *will* be prosecutions over these war crimes. I just hope it happens in a way we can be proud of and not ashamed of because we tried to sweep it under a rug.

Not only have the GOP become the Torture Party, the ‘legacy’ of George W. Bush has become all torture, all the time.
