‘Walking Back’ Nothing

Watching MSNBC last night, you’d think President Obama publicly flogged Judge Sotomayor. Of course he did nothing of the sort, but leave it to NBC News to constantly stoke drama — especially when it comes to powerful women. Here are the president’s remarks to Brian Williams:

I’m sure she would have restated it. But if you look in the entire sweep of the essay that she wrote, what’s clear is that she was simply saying that her life experiences will give her information about the struggles and hardships that people are going through — that will make her a good judge.

She might’ve restated it. Fair enough. But that doesn’t preclude the fact that the president stood by the content of what she said. 100 percent.

Hey guess what? I know what it’s like to be a half-Italian man from Virginia better than does an Anglo woman from Alabama. President Obama understands what it’s like to be a bi-racial man from a single mother better than a white man from a two-parent household. And vice versa. In situations and decisions that reflect these circumstances, there’s a natural insight.

Then again that’s all rational and reasonable. Tancredo, Limbaugh and the others are scared because the white, racist man’s day (thousands of years) on top is rapidly ending. That and their bitterness over their tiny penises.

Notice how Obama says “But if you look in the entire sweep of the essay that she wrote..” The point is, you can’t take one sentence out of context and then conclude that Judge Sotomayor thinks or believes one way or the other.Remember when Obama gave his speech on racism in America? I recall a part of that speech where he pointed out that even his own (white) grandmother would say things that “made him cringe.” The point isn’t that Obama’s grandma was racist, but rather that it’s a complex issue. Then again, cable news doesn’t handle complexity very well. It’s a lot easier to just say: “Judge Sotomayor’s nomination may be in trouble after revelations of her controversial statements about race. Let’s go to former Speaker of the House Newt Ginrich for his take on all of this…”

Thank you. I was reduced to hollering at the screen last night, especially Ed Schultz, but it continued through Olbermann. I listened to the clip. I didn’t see any back walking at all. If they expect Obama to say “f*** ‘em all if they can’t take a joke”, in an interview with Brian Williams they’ve got a long wait.

Exactly, Bob. When they first broke the news with their “This Just in” chyron, I was really pissed because it seemed that the White House was caving on this ridiculous attack. And Gibbs did use the phrase “poor choice of words.” I was livid that they were giving credence to these windbags. Then they actually played the Brian Williams clip and I thought, “Are you kidding me?” Obama’s not walking it back, EXACT OPPOSITE of what they were reporting. Then the talking heads tried to shoehorn the “walking back” meme, but it wasn’t logical after the clip. But controversy is what sells, and after three days of awful coverage about whether or not she’s racist because all the actuasl racists were calling her one, they got to explore the story through another angle. Why worry about doing real news when you can stir the shit?

I just think Obama should not have even waded into the controversy becuse as usual the MSM goes on and on and on–BREAKING NEWS and all- forEVER.If he really wanted to bring a dog to this fight he should have ommented on the rethugs horrific comments and general lack of respectful dialogue about his nominee.I know he wants to be all bi PARTISAN and shit but when does he lay the smackdown on these un elected rethugs?I guess the smackdown is when she gets confirmed.

I agree Jan, but I think this Brian Williams thing was a pre-secheduled event for some Triple A+ Bingo! special NBC supder duper exclusive and it probably would have looked worse had he not answered Williams’ question. He took the high road in not giving the GOP shitstirrers (Newt, Rush, Tancredo, et al) any credence.

  • ceu

He had to wade it. Sotomayor is HIS nomination & he needs to be seen to be supporting her. Staying silent would send a much louder message. Not his fault that corporate media is lazy…

He took the high road in not giving the GOP shitstirrers (Newt, Rush, Tancredo, et al) any credenceYou’re right of course but are we REALLY going to have to hear their screeching for 3 more months?I’m a little surprised that the ELECTED officials of the rethug party can’t control these guys-considering all of this is going to keep them in the minority for the next 20 years probably. Hopefully.I think most people are sick of this already. I am.

I’m so sick of this supreme court confirmation propaganda! Every time it’s the same shit from the Conservatives- dumming down the dialogue with there insistance that appointees not legislate from the bench. Case in point: Bolton on the Overtime last night. This is a crock of shit!Scalia is just as guilty of being and activist judge (in the reactionary sense) as anyone else.It doesn’t take half a brain to see that precendent and constitutional interpretation can be laid out to back up either side of every argument. These are supreme court cases- too complicated to be settled elsewhere- obviously they’ll be hearing matters that are subject to personal interpretation of the issues.

You’re right of course but are we REALLY going to have to hear their screeching for 3 more months?

    Unfortunately, I think we are.

I’m a little surprised that the ELECTED officials of the rethug party can’t control these guys…

It is becoming very interesting that the party that usually marches in lockstep has no leading voice. It’s anarchy on the other side of the aisle and the poo flingers don’t know which attack to take. The elected officials are afraid of a Limbaugh bitchslap, Gingrich is trying to position himself for 2012, Steele is the token figurehead and Buchanan is insane.Let ‘em keep diggin’!

You’re so right Bob! I particularly liked your comment about their tiney members as it were. The Republicans realize that it’s not just their pathetic party that is shrinking. And what could be more threatening than a Latina woman who is smarter than all of those Saltines (Newt, Buchanan, Tancredo, Limbaugh) and their ilk. Shrinkage indeed!

I am still waiting for this headline:”Bigots make racist and sexist comments on TV and radio about highly qualified supreme court nominee.”

One thing, on another note, since I hate that douchbag Joe Scarborough, I can’t wait for Monday morning to see if this tool will actually mention the speech that Senator Levin gave this past Thursday night where he stated that the 2 memos that Cheney and his spawn keep talking about do not show that torture worked of that any actionable intellegence was gathered from it. Let’s see if this beedie eyed dick has the guts to mention it on his show. Or better yet, if someone else brings it up. All of these Republican tools like Scarborough who keep pointing to history and how the Republicans always come back are going to be in for a rude awakening. I don’t think they realize how pissed off those of us who voted for Obama are. Every comment sections of many of the blogs I read has several peoeple talking about crushing them again in 2010 and 2012. I’m hoping they lose at least another 7 of 8 seats and will do everything I can to make it happen.

This is the problem with “news” shows and channels being structured to entertain for ratings and ad revenue rather than delivering information.

I just read Charles Blow’s op-ed in the NY Times from yesterday where he’s talking about all of the racists who are calling Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Blow writes “The Same Newt Gingrich who once said that “Bilingual education was like teaching the language of the ghetto” tweeted that she was a Latina woman racist. Why any of the so called “reporters” are not grilling Newt about this on his daily visits to their shows is infuriating to say the least. When they throw out their garbage, no on calls them on it. They seemed much more interested in whether or not the President discussed abortion rights with her. Today’s reporters are more suited for TMZ or HardCopy and I can’t deceide who I can’t stand more…Jake Tapper or that idiot Major Garrett from Faux news. I think Major is the real tool since he gets his questions for Gibbs from faux news. You guys should check out Charles Blow’s op-ed if you get a chance. It’s got some interesting facts about at least 1 racist who currently sits on the bench. Justice Roberts. The idiot who couldn’t even properly read the oath of office to Obama. Just one more reason Obama looked good voting AGAINST Roberts. Cretin!

One of the things about the the media that drives me crazy is the fact that they don’t call out the other media outlets when they distort the truth. If their job is to deliver the news, isn’t the bastardization of their own profession by the wingnuttia that is fox news a story? How fast do you think the viewers would move to tune in to the broadcasters who have the guts to report the actual facts. Not their parsing and spinning, just the facts? This is why I watch Countdown with Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow’s shows. And while I also watch Ed Shultz now. I really like him though, he annoyed me at the beginning of his show yesterday. I can’t stand faux news and can’t understand why MSNBC felt to need to force that douchebag Scarborough and his Star Search Spokesmodel “Mika” upon us. Faux news doesn’t seem to feel the need to run a leftwing show on their network and their motto is “Fair and Balance”? They’re entire network is filled with assclowns!

“Of course he did nothing of the sort, but leave it to NBC News to constantly stoke drama — especially when it comes to powerful women.”Yeah, I could set my watch by that one… and I’m not referring to NBC.

The information part of infotainment is more often misinformation than it is real information. Making shit up is so much more fun. Reality lacks the drama we require to attract viewers and advertisers.

my favorite part is all the pundits saying “she’ll have to explain that remark to the Senate”. Why? The remark needs no explanation when read in context. Shouldn’t we be able to assume that our Senators can read? It’s apparent that the pundits can’t. (which may exlpain the whole teleprompter kerfuffle…)

  • http://watergatesummer.blogspot.com/ enigma4ever

well, if she has to “explain” that remark…( which by the way is so stupid- is she supposed to “defend” her latin heritage ? or what?) then all the stupid biggotted white guys should have to explain and defend their racism…I am so sick of this…the White Obstructionist party ….can we just send them white sheets and be done with it- and tell them the party of the Klan is OVER…..( sorry – but it is what it is….)

  • incredulous72

“I am so sick of this…the White Obstructionist party ….can we just send them white sheets and be done with it- and tell them the party of the Klan is OVER…..”People, we are not even at the 6-month mark of President Obama’s administration. This racist campaign is going to get far worse before it gets better. The reason being, there are STILL MANY people in this country that think the way these scumbags do; the only difference being these scumbags have a bully pit to scream on when they go on tv and radio promoting their disgusting propaganda. The underlying issue here is race, followed by sexism; two of the biggest brick walls in American history. Oh hell, HUMAN history! It is the cornerstone of the Grand ‘Ol Party; keeping their foot in the necks of all ethnics and keeping the women barefoot, pregnant and under the control of their fathers, brothers, husbands, etc. The presidential election has scared the BEEGEEZUS out of ALOT of these folks, and they are holding on to their last bastion of power (or what they’ve wielded as power for centuries).Does it piss me off to hear the nonsense coming from these bigots mouths? ABSOLUTELY! Especially considering I’m an African-American woman. But you know something? It also puts a smile on my face. Because what is coming from these fat degenerate fucks is FEAR. They are scared to death. They can’t change; they won’t change. And you know what happens to those that can’t adapt …
