Weird Roll Call Vote

I was just looking at the roll call vote on prohibiting the funds for closing Guantanamo. The vote was 90-6 which means there had to have been some liberal senators voting with the Republicans.

Sure enough, Sanders and Feingold both voted for the amendment (with Reid, the Republicans and against the president). The six senators who voted to provide the funding were Durbin, Harkin, Leahy, Reed, Levin and Whitehouse.

What am I missing about this amendment? Jeepers creepers. Sanders and Feingold?

What are you missing? How about, Why does it cost $80 Million to move 241 people?

  • ceu

there’s a deal going on. There has to be.The cost is irrelevant compared to the lives that have been destroyed there.

    >>>How about, Why does it cost $80 Million to move 241 people?Yeah, just stick them on a JetBlue flight with some mall cops.I haven’t heard a single senator mention the cost.

80 million is nothingThis is pure political nonsense

    >>Yeah, just stick them on a JetBlue flight with some mall cops.Bob, you know you have to release them before you can imprison them right? I don’t know how I can make that any clearer to you.

Right, almost everyone is crying NIMBY and no one has moaned about how expensive it is. I don’t get it either. We can keep some of our most dangerous criminals, mass murderers, serial rapists and pedophiles, drug lords and mafia leaders safely behind bars, but can’t expect the US penal system to be able to handle suspected “terrorists”? Looks like too many politicans are worried about re-election and being labeled soft on terror.

ABC news just started with “Serious setback! The Senate puts Obama ON NOTICE over closing Gitmo! Obama has been riding high in public opinion polls, but today, the Senate issued a RESOUNDING VOTE against funding for the closing of Gitmo until plans for what to do with the prisoners are set!” Then went on to fear monger about terrorists in US prisons, “FBI director even said TODAY!”Wow, Gibson just pointed out that we already HAVE terrorists in prison. George Steffy continuing to spit out what the FBI director said, the “Not in My Backyard!” campaign, etc. Bleh.

Grudgingly Bob I agree Reid must go! However, my take on this whole issue is a little different than yours. The reason 90 Senators voted against funding is a little grayer than what’s been written. If the detainees are allowed to enter into the country and gain representation from ACLU lawyers, they might start to tell a slightly different story than what we currently know. Right now the Military Attorneys are bound by their government allegience’s to protect the interest of the government.Once the private ACLU lawyers get the chance, we may find that several of these so-called terrorist were in fact working for Private Contractors that would implicate people and countries we supposedly trust. The last thing these Senators want is for Obama and his legal team to get their hands on detaiinees without Military intervention. Hopefully Pres. Obama will present a closure plan the public can forcefully get behind, which will ultimately expose these corrupt polticians for their Bush complicity.I know it sounds a little conspiratorial, but the facts speak for themselves.

Someone wrote earlier about a closed door deal. One of the Israeli newspapers posted a story about a letter sent to Pres. Obama, signed by 73 Senators imploring him to support Israel and ignore the Arab and Muslim countries regarding a mid-east peace plan.AIPAC has spoken, this is where the rubber meets the road. Until Pres. Obama loosens his stance on immediate Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. He’s going to see additional setbacks especially in the Senate. Oh, and if you think it’s coincidental that Iran tested a ballistic missle today, I want some of what your smoking(LOL)

My guess is that it’s a procedural vote to keep the issue on the table when a plan is ready for what to do with them.

interesting commentsI wonder if we will ever know the real reasons for this vote.

IMHO, the Senate is signaling the president to come up with a plan ASAP. They want this particular hot potato served long before the 2010 campaign season kicks in.

    Bob,

Yeah, just stick them on a JetBlue flight with some mall cops.I haven’t heard a single senator mention the cost.

You haven’t heard a single senator mention the cost? Wow. What a shocker. Spending other people’s money doesn’t our government. There’s a shocker. It’s not just the flight, Bob. It’s the prison cost as well and all other associated costs, which rounds out to $331,000 each. Now, do you really believe it will cost that much?Second point. How long do you think these prisoners will last in of our prisons? I talked about that back in January.Do you know what this looks like, Bob?It looks like politics. President Obama feeds some meat to the left by making a big announcement about the Presidential order, and Harry Reid falls on the sword for him, because they never had any intention of closing the place at all. We’ve gone five months since Obama announced the closing of Gitmo. There is no plan in place to accomplish it; there never has been. You’d think with five months to work with, they’d have at least an outline of how to accomplish it.My advice to you is; don’t hold your breath. President Obama has plenty of time to close Gitmo just before the next election. Then we can watch as one by one, these detainees are raped and shanked in American prisons. I’ll bet that will make you feel all warm and fuzzy, won’t it?Why are you in such a hurry to see that? Gitmo is probably the safest place for them.
