Why Haven’t They Seceded Yet?

Because this is pretty awful:

CNN reports that Texas hospitals are charging women who have been raped thousands of dollars for their rape kits that are collected by police as part of their investigations. According to the state officials, Texas’s crime victim compensation consistently has a surplus and could likely cover these expenses.

It sounds like Texas is borrowing the tea bagger slogan: Your [rape] is not my problem.

Apparently this is not true – as stated by a blogger at TPC

  • Skippy

I don’t understand how anyone who isn’t a proudly stupid white guy can bear to live in that backward hellhole of a state.

It was a commenter.. she is commenting at Think Progress also and her source is the State of Texas web site.. Not exactly what I would call a reliable source. The explanation from what I am reading is, they are sending them to the hospital and the hospital is billing the victim instead of Law Enforcement. So, it’s debatable as to whether it is the state or the hospital who is at fault. It would seem the state or the Law Enforcement Department in question should be able to have it billed to them with no question, and I don’t understand why they aren’t.

vyccan – can you provide a link, please?

Nevermind – I see Annette’s all over it.

I’m not surprised that’s the way it works in TX.When Sarah Palin was Mayor of Wasilla, the city’s SOP (as a cost-saving measure) was to bill the victims or their insurance companies for the rape kits.Of course, when that fact became known, the state legislature passed a measure banning the practice.

  • Theghostsong

Is this any surprise coming from the state that executes the retarded?

  • http://annette-justmylittlepieceoftheworld.blogspot.com/ Annette

Not at all.. Ghost… Perry and Palin taking lessons from each other…lol

  • Nanotyrannus

Wasn’t it revealed in Alaska as well that in order to receive federal assistance (of some sort), the state was required to cover the cost of the rape kits?

  • http://oneceltsview.blogspot.com/ Wolfe Tone

That might well be, Nano, but I don’t know for certain.

  • http://annette-justmylittlepieceoftheworld.blogspot.com/ Annette

Not sure about that.. but I do know they were charging or trying to charge for them in Wasilla, where Palin was Mayor and it was a bit of a controversy. Until the Chief of Police put a stop to it. She tried to deny it, but it was widely reported and finally it was just dropped like most of the bad press about her.

  • http://annette-justmylittlepieceoftheworld.blogspot.com/ Annette

I really don’t remember anything about the Federal Funding.. but it could be. I would have to check with a couple of the other bloggers in AK that I read…

The entire texas justice system, especially the privately owned prisons… are all corrupt beyond your wildest fucking believes. I have family that spent time there and ive been there myself a dozen times, unfortunately. It can fall off into the fucking gulf for all I care

Texas can secede. It will probably be necessary, however, for us to build a fence around the Republic of Texas in order to prevent the illegal immigration of Texans. I don’t want them coming here and using any of my taxpayer funded health care/education or taking any of my American jobs.

  • http://www.newsonthemarch.net brentblah

I’m Texan and I think that everyone in charge here is insane. Can I still jump the Republic fence and come to sane America?

  • http://www.sigzone.blogspot.com MG

I hate Texas. I went there for the first time last November to visit Kennedy’s assassination site. Almost everyone who I met was a prick. To hell with them. They produce the dumbest, craziest fucks in the nation.

  • rogect8

    >>>Apparently this is not true – as stated by a blogger at TPCI’d be surprised if that were correct. I’ve now seen this reported by both MSNBC and CNN.brentblah – come on over! Just make sure you don’t jump a fence to the north and end up in Oklahoma…And the rest of you are right as well. Fuck Texas.

  • texyes

easy folks….i am non white progressive Texan and am proud to be from this State despite its flaws. Before you exile us or hope that we fall into the gulf please take a chill pill and quit stereo typing a whole state based on some reports you hear on the news…. I travel for a living and can say that the people in this county are pretty much the same no matter what state I happen to be in. Take a long look in the mirror before you start judging…karma is a bitch…

@ Annette: (returning a day later) Thank you! I’ve only just realized – as a result of your first response – that there is a difference between a commenter and a blogger. I’d just unconsciously assumed that by writing on a blog, you’re a blogger. [Now you've shattered my self-pride that I've been 'blogging'. :( ] Ah well! I prefer to learn the correct terms even if it takes a while, so thanks! I also appreciate that you clarified the situation, because I wouldn’t have known how to give Broadway C a ‘link’ other than mentioning where I saw it. Are there special steps to provide a link? Also, ‘Happy Mother’s Day!’ to all who fill the mothering role.
