Conrad Backpedals on Emanuel Remark

Yesterday, we were rightfully freaking out about a report indicating that Rahm Emanuel was willing to jettison the public option in lieu of a compromised healthcare bill. Apparently Rahm didn’t mean what Conrad thought he meant:

Conrad says Emanuel was speaking in reference to the need to overhaul the health care system as a whole — to forge compromise and get a bill to the president’s desk. It was in no way a comment on the president’s willingness to do away with a public option.

Sigh of relief for now.

But it doesn’t hurt to keep the White House on your speed dial. The president wants to be pushed on this. Also, go here and tell the president about your health insurance nightmare.

Good news! I also saw a story today on crook and liars about the Massachusettes healthcare plan.See How Well That Healthcare Reform Worked Out? Mass. Health Plan Cuts Subsidies for NeedyBy Susie Madrak Thursday Jun 25, 2009 5:30amThis is pretty big news, guys. Remember, the Massachusetts plan is the model they want to use for national reform – and already it’s beginning to crack under the economic strain. This is what happens with “bipartisan,” market-friendly compromise: Band-aid solutions that can’t handle a massive load. And it’s exactly why we need single-payer universal healthcare: because it’s the only plan cheap enough to stay solvent through tough times. Thanks butk, No Thanks!

I’m going to have to say that people weren’t “rightfully” freaking out. I get that it’s a fraught issue, but I think it’s been made even more so by the endless parsing of leaked half-quotes by all sides in this debate. I feel the public’s interest might be better served by making sure their representatives are aware of what the people want (as you suggest), and responding mainly to concrete actions (like the Schumer/Baucus compromise).

Here’s how it went:”White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel met last night at the U.S. Capitol with Senate Democrats and told them…look you fucking fucked fucks, shut the fuck up, and talk this shit out! You’ve got til’ the end of August, so your goddamned fucking Meatballs summer just got revoked!”"Baucus, you fucking worm. You little health insurance company bitch, How’s your mother…? Good. That’s good. Give her my best. Now don’t make me come back here or I’ll put your lilly-white nuts in a vice, fucko.”

There’s no way that Conrad thought he could make somthing up about what went on at that meeting and get away with it. Maybe it’s just me, but I think he and Rahm had a little talk after the fact and Conrad is just covering for him.
