Eisenhower had over 3 million men at his command on D-Day. I think its very fitting that he went on to become president and then upon leaving office, warn the nation about the Military Industrial Complex. Its too bad we didn’t heed the warning.

Eisenhower was president when I was in grammar school. I saw him as a pleasant old goofball. Then I grew up and read about WWII.He was a remarkable general and heroic human being. The real heroes of D-Day are of course the young (very young) men who hit the beaches starting that day. Most were 17 to 20 years old. Read Stephen Ambrose’s “D-Day” — you alternate between tears and exhilaration.Read Stud Terkel’s “The Good War” for an eye-opening view of the home front. We owe a debt that can never be paid in full to the people who fought in the field and at home. One small payment can be made by learning about what they went through.
