Dick Cheney Is What?!

I’ve been a little guarded about declaring any sort of broad, long-term Democratic victory since the recent electoral failures of the Republican Party.

Public opinion regarding the Republicans, despite all of their crazy, is much more resilient. Much of this has to do with the deference and positive attention they receive from the corporate media (see also the “liberal network” MSNBC’s handling of Liz Cheney, Pat Buchanan and others).

I have no other explanation for why, in the latest Gallup poll, Dick Cheney is faring better than Nancy Pelosi.

I imagine it has something to do with the fact that democrats and other left leaners have not been extremely happy with Pelosi. I haven’t been, that’s for sure. And if anyone asked, I’d say I have an unfavorable opinion of her. But not as unfavorable as Cheney.republicans love Cheney for some reason. Well, because he’s an unapologetic psycho torturer.

Jeff, would you tell me what you have against Nancy?I hear or should I say see, people say all the time they don’t like her, but no one can give me a real reason why they don’t like her, so I would really like you to list them for me.I truly don’t have a thing against her. I think she is a strong Democratic force and a great leader, however I don’t truly know enough about her to have an opinion one way or the other as to whether I would vote for her if it came to that, because I don’t live in her district. Shame on me for not knowing more about the Speaker of the House, and I mean that sincerely.

It’s unsurprising. I’m beginning to despise Pelosi, actually. I hate Reid even more, obviously. They represent the worst of politics. Also, I always liked Cheney slightly more than I liked the chimp because I knew that the chimp was as malicious as Cheney yet he hid it better. I don’t like frauds. He was also brain dead. Cheney was very articulate (mark this as the first time a white person has said this about another white person).

Too often, Speaker Pelosi is conflated with Harry Reid and I don’t think that’s fair. The House Democrats have been exponentially bolder than the Senate Democrats.Ultimately, I think this is a case in which wingnut attacks have unfairly bled leftward.

Posted by: Annette at June 5, 2009 6:08 PMWell, let me ask you something: when has Dick Cheney ever genuflected to the other side? There is something admirable about that– even if he is completely wrong. Whereas Harry Reid would literally take a phallus up his rectum for Republicans during some weeks, Dick Cheney never relents. He never bends for political purposes. I actually respect that sort of tenacity.

I don’t like her Annette because she is too “smooth” and at the same time “clumsy”. Of course I mean this in the political sense. She is also too partisan and petty. Harry Reid as well. I also don’t like her because after the dems took control in 2006 she took impeachment off the table. That goes against her constitutional duties. I am not saying shrub should have been impeached, although personally I believe he should have, but it should have stayed on the table. It is a constitutional option for keeping the balance of powers intact. She, with her majority, was not strong enough against shrub in the last 2 years. And Harry Reid? Nancy has more spine than Harry, but not by much.I think she is too connected to lobbyists and the establishment. For now, that is all I can think of, but I will be thinking about it and may come back and add some things. lol

Annette, you really want an answer, eh?Bob is right in one respect. It’s the democratic leadership I find pathetic, but it is mainly Reid that I despise. I just have never seen great leadership from her. I remember when she was first elected minority house leader right after the Iraq War started. I was excited, her being from SF where I grew up, I thought it was great that a woman might be one of the new faces of the party, then I saw her on Meet the Press and and Russert showed her critical anti-war statements she’d made about Bush and she totally backtracked, “Oh we need to support the president, blah blah blah….” I realized, ok, she’s just like the rest of the dems who totally gave into Bush and let him have this war. From that moment on, I never saw any great leadership moments from her, she was never particularly inspiring as someone with cross-party appeal that I guess Gingrich briefly had. On election night 06, she gave a great speech after the dems took back the House, and I really thought they’d be able to put pressure on Bush to work with dems in congress. Never happened. Now under Obama, she made some comment like “Obama doesn’t set the rules for congress” or something to that effect, when obviously he’s the greatest asset she has politically. Then in his address to congress, she was jumping out of her seat to applaud him, and it just looked a little pathetic and not befitting a leader.Like I said, overall I don’t approve. But I’m an independent who has been disgusted with dem leadership for quite awhile. Obama changed that for me. Maybe I’m being too harsh on Pelosi. I was just reading an article in Newsweek on her, it was actually pretty good. I think she works hard behind the scenes but isn’t good at handling her public perception. Honestly, probably part of the reason the media doesn’t give her a fair shake is because she’s a woman and she’s subject to a different standard, and maybe that has some effect on me. :(

“after the dems took control in 2006 she took impeachment off the table”Thank you veralynn, I knew I was forgetting something! It was exactly that kind of submission to Bush that had me pining for a new leader in the House. I’m just not familiar enough with other House members to know if there’s a good replacement. In the Senate, I know Feingold is my most favoritist senator. He’d be like, awesome as Majority Leader.

Harry Reid is the worst in my opinion. Like someone said, he has no spine. It’s okay to try to reach bipartisan consensus on issues, but don’t back down from your principles, don’t back down against the Republican leadership. On things like health care or Dawn Johnsen, he always seems scared to call Republicans on their bullshit when its necessary because he doesn’t want to be perceived as “too liberal.” Your job as the leader is to push the agenda of the Democrats, to get people in the Senate to get their shit together and come to some consensus and sometimes he seems unwilling to fight for what he knows is right. As far as the rest of Congress, I know they are looking out for their constituents and what not, but sometimes it’s not about just your state, it’s about all of them. Stop balking at health care reform because your afraid of upsetting a certain constituency. Instead try to convince them that this way is the way to go. That is your job. Stop worrying about your next election and focus on what’s best for the entire country.

Now the Lobbyists is what would bother me the most.Being a strong political person wouldn’t really bother me. She would have to be strong politically to make it to the top of her world so to speak. But, she must have something going for her in the House, or else she wouldn’t have gotten enough votes to get elected to Speaker.. That surely means something does it not?

Pelosi has taken a huge hit over the hysterics on Fox “News” about “She knew about torture! That means it’s okay! Or it was wrong, but since she didn’t stop it, it’s okay then because the dems won’t throw he under the bus!” Or whatever the fuck the talking points were. She’s never had high marks, but Fox succeeded in pulling her down to Cheney’s level, not elevated him above her.

I agree, I think Harry Reid is the real problem and I think it carries over to the House, and we forget it is two separate bodies.Even though there is a large majority in the House and there would be an ability to carry through with bills and votes, the same ability may not always carry through in the Senate due to Reid’s inability to lead. So, Pelosi has to back down on pushing things because she knows it won’t go anywhere, and it makes her looks bad. That’s my theory anyway..Anyone else?

Taking impeachment off the table isn’t enough for me to lump Nancy Pelosi in with Harry Reid. We’ve witnessed a tremendous majority emerge under their watch. Like it or not, they both have value to team America. It’s just too bad Reid’s such a pushover because they say nobody knows the procedural process better than him. He’s a sort of procedural super-nerd. I’ve often thought maybe he feels guilty about his intricate knowledge of Senate procedures so he never maneuvers in a way that would cripple the moves of the senate republicans.Either way, Dick f-ing Cheney is a blatant lying coward, and a fraud. Five military deferments and conspiring/ordering the torture of captive human beings is the mark of a coward. Fearmongering is cowardly. Attacking a country that didn’t attack us is cowardly. Lying about the reasoning is even more cowardly. Sending your daughter to MSNBC as a human shield is desperate and cowardly.Oh, but Nancy Pelosi is seen as less favorable?Than Dick Cheney? That’s not right.I don’t let pissant Republicans defame the Speaker of the House and I can’t really see abundant cause for her political head in a basket made by some who are registered Democrats. Remember the last couple Speakers before her? Who can argue with Newt Gingrich or Dennis Hastert’s brilliant and compassionate handling of America?I kind of like Nancy Pelosi. She’s a toughie when she’s attacked. Is Steny Hoyer better suited? He must believe so.

I agree MrBrink, I have no admiration for Cheney, I would just as soon spit on him as look at him. He is worthless as far as I am concerned. Talk about unrepentant, he is what I would consider unrepentant and I believe he could also be considered a terrorist. He certainly generates enough fear in people, or tries to.So far the only real argument or reason I have seen for not liking Nancy is the Lobbyist matter that VeraLynn gave, everything else is personality faults maybe but not really reasons for dislike.Steny Hoyer is one of the only ones I have seen actually come out in her defense recently, and he did very strongly, I think that may be part of the problem with the poll numbers. We, the Democrats aren’t talking enough, you have all kinds of Republicans on the TeeVee Machine talking about torture, or as they call it EIT, yet how many Democrats do you see? Liz is out there, Dick is out there, half the Republican members of Congress have been on talking about it and defending it.. but how many Democrats have been out there, not many.. no wonder Cheney’s numbers are up and the Democratic numbers are down. It’s called high visibility.

“Steny Hoyer is one of the only ones I have seen actually come out in her defense recently, and he did very strongly…”That’s not the impression I get by any means. In his initial response, I watched him try to be a politician about it, while simultaneously directing the national torture discussion in the wrong direction. And if anyone can name me a representative in any party that faces more brutal political attacks than Nancy Pelosi, I’d like to know. They attack her from everywhere and for everything. Every breath she takes is under attack by someone somewhere. It’s become knee-jerk for a lot of people to say they “can’t stand Nancy Pelsoi!” or “Pelosi & Reid!!!!” and maybe it’s become a burden, or a distraction?I contend that she doesn’t deserve 70% of the scornful attacks, and I was hoping someone could convince me because I’ve been trying really hard to see why she should be voted out or stripped of her House leadership.I don’t see it and I’m really trying.

Nancy Pelosi elicits the same feelings of loathing in many people that Hillary Clinton did. She is the right’s new female punching bag.Just like Clinton, she is a smart, savvy politician, who is a survivor. Mysogonistic wingnuts hates them a powerful female liberal. She is also an opportunistic, triangulating politician, which can turn off lefty purists. Then there is the nebulous likability factor, which some people (Michelle Obama and Opra Winfrey) have, and some people don’t.

I like Nancy Pelosi and the fact that the Right is intimidated by her makes me like her more. I don’t know who those people are in the polls but there is now way that American’s like Dick more than “Pussy Galore”.

I’m glad we had this discussion. Maybe she’s not so bad. I just have to believe that out of 250 dems in congress, there would be a better leader in there somewhere. But Reid definitely gets a thumbs down!

Annette -Nancy Pelosi is a oath breaker who is guilty of malfeasance.Rep. Kucinich read Thirty-Five articles of impeachment on the floor of the house. It was her duty to send them to committee for analysis and recommendation. Instead, she ignored them. The torture issue was just one of the 35 articles.I am waiting for Nancy to explain to me what part of the law regarding impeachment gives her permission to pretend the articles were read. What she has done is a violation of law.I have a problem with this. More info here. I was a huge fan of Pelosi prior to her deciding that she can just ignore the law.

Yes, you and I have discussed it before.. and I agree. But when people just say they don’t like her but never list reasons I want them to tell me why, and I tend to challenge them. They need to be able to articulate it. Not just parrot, I don’t like her.

It could also be that if Pelosi were to go on every talking heads show and spout a bunch of lies, there might actually be some consequences to her actions. Even more so if she had her kids spouting those lies as well.Whereas big Dick can say anything without consequence. He can make up a bunch of revisionist history lies, get the people at faux news to accept them without questions, and retreat to Mt. Doom.

Cheney is the crooked asshole I wanted to see impeached. Kucinich read articles of impeachment against Cheney in 2007. I am far more annoyed with Cheney than with Nancy. I am more annoyed with Harry Reid than with Nancy.
