Here in Nigeria, and therefore missed the President’s speech. What I’ve read of it though, is very encouraging, and I am really touched by the way that he quoted three major religious texts at the end.QT

Brilliant! He not only spoke to the needs of the current day, he also acknowledged the past imperialism that we need to move away from to get to a peaceful world. He also, softly, reminded the world of his predecessors failed policies and his moves to remove them from continuing to inflict pain upon the innocent. This he did by pointing out other failed conflicts in the region and the need to stop the fighting and work toward common beneficial goals.QT, I thought of you throughout the speech knowing you’d be particularly glad for his inclusion and regard for all faiths represented in the region. This will be remembered as one of America’s greatest diplomatic moments.

Gutsy speech and he really spoke to the young people in Muslim nations and in fact everyone willing to listen. The people in power in the different places he mentioned will find plenty to critique but the younger generation will find an abundance of material to digest. The portion of the speech that I found really incredible was how he linked the foolishness of violent extremism with the achievements of civil rights in the U.S. That part send two messages:One of course is the use and support of violence to propagate a cause gets nowhere and in fact helps defeat whatever aim you are pursing. Mainly because violence brews hate. Period. I cannot begin to see any point you are making if I hate you.Second is, while we can show people how a democracy can work effectively by our example and deeds, we cannot and should not force it down anyone’s throat. If they want changes in their countries they must work for it. Both men and women must work with all they have to achieve it. There will be sacrifices, people will die, but if it is wanted badly enough and done through non-violent demonstration change will eventually come. This fact has been shown through out history and figures like Ghandi and Dr. King Jr.Again brilliant speech! That ‘s my Prez.

CNN has a correspondent who is communicating by Twitter with Iranians. Very, very positive remarks coming back. The most important one was that one of the Iranians stated that he/she now believed that Obama would not attack Iran. Can you imagine if our former presidents had even a 10th of the talent, brains and morality of this president, there would never have been a 9/11. John Mayer said it all “we’re waitin on the world to change”. Obama is leading the way. He is magnificent.

This was a brilliantly crafted speech and brilliantly delivered. It spoke to the concerns and sensibilities of the target audience, giving the component which is so seldom understood by non-arabs when dealing with arabs– the protocols of stated respect. This speech will go some way to tick the Doomsday clock backwards a few minutes.

While I liked the speech, and always love hearing President Obama speak, I’m just trying to figure out who he was talking to. The speech was definitely not aimed at your normal Middle Eastern Muslim.

And how did you arrive at this…um… wisdom? Because it seemed to me that he is the first person in a long time to attempt to address JUST that type of person. Are you well traveled and conversant with various arab and muslim cultures? Do you have a lot of dealings with ethnic arabs here in the US?Please, do tell– what are your bona fides here, in declaring awareness as to the character and natural proclivities of the “normal” Middle Eastern muslim?Or are you speaking about your perception of what a “normal Middle Eastern Muslim” is, which involves riding camels, bartering in bazaars, in between random calls of death for infidels?
