MY NSFW Health Video

by Lee Stranahan

(EDITOR’S NOTE: This contains frontal nudity. -Bob)

Partially inspired by PETA and partially inspired by what seems to get a lot of hits on the Huffington Post, I used my portfolio as an award winning photographer of fine art erotica and a voiceover from my wife to put this together. And I’m one of those people who don’t see anything wrong with using the human body to talk about health care.

Nice one Lee, maybe this would get the attention of the coverage denying CEOs of health/death profit machines.

  • Russell

There’s a lot that’s good about this vid, Lee, but the best has to be Lauren’s voice. Oh my….

  • Gottverdammt Klaus

Smartly done, Lee. I like how focused/targeted it is on a particular aspect of health care policy. It seemed to me more effective in that rather than the anecdotal stories of those who have suffered through our health care system, it instead appeals to a particular condition and a particular demographic – although that demographic impacts everyone. Everyone has a mother.Stylistically the only criticism I could even think to offer would be possibly a different font. I feel like it could have been more… striking? Visually arresting, to contrast with the images and highlight the harshness of the issue? Just .02. Really, great work!Any chance of the Huffington Post putting it up?

  • gypsy

nice. and by nice i mean this video is doing absolutely nothing to help give credit to a public option. it’s offensive in that the specific images you choose to portray implies “let’s get health care for all women so they can keep their boobies healthy for sexual pleasure. what else are they for.” i know the erotic photos are what you have handy but wouldn’t photos of women breastfeeding, women who have lost their breasts, etc. hold a stronger truer need for a public option in healthcare?

  • gypsy

shocking guys are “raving” about this!

  • Stranahan

Lauren breast fed our kids, plans to breast feed the next one. We’ve had close family members with breast cancer.Sorry you’re offending by seemingly health breasts, Gypsy. I also don’t have a problem with sexual pleasure – but nothing in the video implied that’s the only purpose.

  • theo

Lee, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Gypsy is sex negative, she just meant that there might be a better way of making a point than using boobies. But you knew that.I won’t debate the video, but I also won’t let you be an ass to gypsy.

  • Stranahan

I have made the case for health care reform in 9 different videos so far.I don’t think I was being an ass to her. On the contrary, she was being an ass to me. Further – I don’t even get point…it sure does seem sex negative. It seems to be attacking the idea that men like boobs. Well, guess what – men like boobs. Kinda hard wired for most of us, too. I didn’t make a decision about – just, they look nice to me. And not just me. Apparently, boob are popular. That’s what I gather from looking at…well, most art since the Venus of Willendorf.

I swear to God/IPU/FSM that I have tried very hard not to be attracted by the sight of boobies. No go. A really nice ass is even worse. I can’t help myself. You have no idea how difficult it is to refrain from touching them. Please count your blessings.

  • Terri

Bad taste.Erotica and health care don’t go together. They are separate entities.Putting them together is distracting and ineffective.Viewers are easily drawn to to the exposed breasts and the message gets lost. The images override the message, thus making the whole thing ineffective.Sex might sell luxury cars, but not health care.I vote ‘no’ on this ad, but liked your other ones.Terri

  • Terri

Lee,Why are you pimping your health care ad inthis manner:Lee posted “Watch My NSFW Healthcare Reform Video on Vimeo! http://vimeo.com/5299673 (seriously, there’s lots of nudity in it) Watch, RT!” via___You are really compromising your credibility, inmy opinion.Telling others to WATCH! and “There’s lots ofnudity!”You sound like a dirty old man rather thansomeone serious about the issue. What’s going on?Terri

  • LK

I agree with Terri and gypsy on this Lee.I have loved all your ads so far. But this one does seem to distract from the message – at least for me. Not trying to be an ass…just saying how it feels for me. Having 3 family members with breast cancer (2 survivors) – this does not really touch on the issues that they experienced. Not that it has to…just sharing another perspective. You are of course entitled to make ads that make sense to you.

  • Terri

Yes, LK.The thing is is that Lee’s other video on this topicwas quite good.I feel that Lee compromised himself with this oneand that disappoints me.The “buzz” will be just as it is here: talkingabout the breasts and the nudity ratherthan the important health care crisis at hand. This is not about being a prude or offended; itis simply that he strikes the wrong note and itdetracts from the message and the crisis natureof the health care issue. The women are not the ones who have been compromised, Lee’s credibility has been.Clearly, he is talented and capable of sharp, pointedwork.

  • Stranahan

I ‘pimp’ all my video stuff on Twitter by saying Watch….so you’ll also see stuff life…Late nighters : JUST finished a new health care parody video of a BS Coservative anti-reform ad. Watch, RT! http://tr.im/pqp8With some words in ALL CAPS and !s after Watch, RT!I mention the nudity so people who might be offended by nudity don’t click acidentaly. But once – insults. I’m a ‘dirty old man’ for promoting a video in EXACTLY the same way I promote all of them.Furthermore – this is me, not a compromise. Whether you like it or not, part of who I am as artist is the thousands of pictures of naked people I’ve taken sitting on my hard drive. It’s just as much a part of who I am and what I do as the fact I know how to use After Effects or the fact that I’ve made a lot of stock footage with money flying around.I am trying to reach a different demographic on this video then some of the other ones? Absolutely. And its’ already the 3rd most watched video out of the 9.I’m not going to apologize for using every tool and technique at my disposal in the interest of winning the battle for health care reform.

  • Terri

Who knew it took over-exposure of titties to win health care reform?I guess Lee did!

  • http://arkytek.blogspot.com/ SillyGit

Terri -I agree with your points. You presented a compelling argument that caused me to reevaluate my earlier position which I now think was wrong. In addition to your argument, gypsy, theo, and LK all expressed the same concern that you did.Lee wants to dismiss the complaint as coming from prudish women. While I ignored that in my comment, this accusation does not survive superficial scrutiny. The women bringing the complaint are open minded, willing to consider all angles liberals. They are anti-prudes. Putting the word prude into the same sentence as gypsy is potentially dangerous as they risk annihilation. The comment history of these women shows that they are not prudes.Since they are not prudes the complaint needs to be analyzed on its merits. Since I am a man, I can’t be relied on. I try to eliminate sexism from my thinking, but that is less than perfect. I would defer to your judgment which you have already expressed.

  • Terri

Thanks SG, well said.Unfortunately, Lee doesn’t “get it” as is evidencedby this tweet of his:_____Lee posted “Not a comment war exactly, but kind of a skirmish over nudity in my NSFW health care reform video http://tr.im/pC0y” via___He thinks that the remarks are “over nudity”.See how he doesn’t get it?He thinks we’re complaining about the boobage in his video. When he can conveniently does and says that it gives him an “out” and he doesn’t have to actually consider what is really being said. He can conclude:”They are reacting to the nudity — prudes!”It’s really very dismissive and douchey.Instead, what I wrote was that the visual and did not match — and even detracted — from the seriousness of the health care crisis. The visual and the message were misaligned. He wants to comfortably place in his mind “they were offended by the nudity”…..he can wrap his head around that. It’s interesting that someone who appears so “open” and “free” with all the nudie pics on his hard drive that he wants to use — is really someonewho is rather narrow and close minded.Paradox!
