Hey all you NCer’s…what do you think of our state offering $46 Billion worth of tax breaks for Apple? They will get these tax breaks for investing $1 Billion and hiring 50 full time employees.Am I the only one who thinks this is not a good deal for the state or am I just nuts?

VeraThat deal for Apple is probably good for NC. You have Lenovo, RedHat, and Apple with significant presence in Research Triangle. Without those sort of deals the jobs will go to India or equiv. Fifty hightech jobs for Americans is nothing to sneezw at.

But for almost a billion for each? I agree we need the jobs and the area they are thinking about has been depressed economically for a long time. I am sensitive to this because we did the same thing for Phillip Morris 20 years ago. We gave them basically a tax free deal for 20 years, well when that 20 is almost up, what do they do? Announce they will be shutting down the plant and moving everything to Richmond. They announced this at the end of last year, they would be leaving by the end of 2010. Then about 2 months ago, they are closing by the end of July 2009.I agree we should be giving them some sort of deal, but I would like a little more for the state than what we offered them. Although I haven’t heard if there is a time frame like PM had. If anyone knows more, please advise. I really would like to feel better about this whole thing.
