J M GD Ashby -Some. Not all. I’m not a fan of the Hostel movies although I greatly admire the special effects. Those lack the black comedy aspect that I think makes a good horror flick. Another example is “The Hills have Eyes” and its sequel. I intensely dislike those two.The TX Chainsaw Massacre was the first really good film of its genre. A genre that it created. There was nothing even remotely like it before. “Mark of the Devil” was a push towards that genre but did not get there. The Romero “Night of the Living Dead” could be considered a forerunner and Romero went on to make slasher flicks every bit as good as TX Chainsaw Massacre, but TX Chainsaw Massacre gets credit for setting the new standards for a new genre. In 1974 it really shocked people. Even me. I’m not easily shocked. It was way beyond my expectations. The really cool thing about the movie is that it is really not very bloody. You just think it is because your moind fills in stuff that the director does not actually show. The Rob Zombie films are way more bloody, but special effects are so much better now and everything can be made to look real.TX Chainsaw Massacre was made with a surprisingly low budget. Zombie had much larger budgets to make “House of 1000 Corpses” and “Devils Rejects”

While not a slasher film, “Dead and Breakfast” is one of the greatest movies of all time. Like Shaun of the Dead set in a small Texas town.

There are some great horror flicks made in Germany. Most of them are not seen in U.S. theaters but the DVDs can be rented from Netflix.

Any recommendations? I don’t think I’ve seen any German horror movies.
