Sarah Palin: Humor Czar

My new piece on HuffPost

In a dramatic twist, comic Dennis Miller caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror standing with Palin and Larry The Cable Guy. A look of sudden recognition came over his face before he grabbed a loaded revolver from a Secret Service agent, made a quick reference to 13th century French architect Jean de Chelles and then blew his own brains out. Palin roared with laughter.

I love it!I just wished you’d somehow included Robert Duvall in the works. Damn I love his acting! The guy is extremely talented and yet his political views sicken me! Sometimes it’s hard to separate the two.

Great article.I wish Letterman hadn’t apologized. He had nothing to apologize for, especially not the way Palin and her blithering pack of rage pimps TOOK the joke.Is that what we’ve come to? Now it doesn’t matter what the actual intent or meaning of the joke is, if some twisted fuckwit can read it in a way they find offensive (and the right-wing is offended by ANYTHING they disagree with or which holds them up to ridicule) an apology can be extracted.Letterman SHOULD have come out an explained that they had demanded he apologized, and said something like, “I’m really very sorry that you didn’t get the joke. I’m even sorrier that you exploit your teenage children to further your own craven, backward political ends…but please don’t stop, you’re a comedy goldmine. Next time to slither down here from Alaska, you’re still welcome to come discuss it on my show.”

  • roxsteady

Hilarious! Now that Dave has apologized, let’s see how man demonstrators and COUNTER DEMONSTRATORS will show up for this ridiculous rally. I hope that some of the Bleacher Bums from Yankee Stadium show up to give these idiots a BRONX CHEER! Oh, and maybe some eggs! If we’re lucky maybe a taxi will jumped the curb and take out a few of these harpies or John Ziegler. Yes, I know it’s mean. No, I don’t give a shit!

  • marilync

Wonderful article! But weren’t her 15 minutes over a long time ago? Why is she still here?

    Sarah Palin issued a statement:

“The Palins have no intention of providing a rating’s (sic) boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.”

If Palin is permitted to take her own perspective on the meaning of Dave’s joke – the one that allows her to be indignant and accusatory, then it is perfectly fair to treat Palin’s words with the same standard. In fact, just take the PLAIN MEANING – examine what those words mean ON THEIR FACE – without going to any of the tortured analysis employed by Sarah Palin.WHY is it “wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman”?Sarah Palin is accusing David Letterman of being a threat to children. In the context of the accusation by Palin regarding the joke itself – a twisted, logically contorted presumption, this can only be taken to mean that SARAH PALIN IS CALLING DAVID LETTERMAN A PEDOPHILE.I don’t care what joke any comedian tells. I don’t care what line a joke does or does not cross.People who think they are fit to GOVERN a state, or the entire country, ought not accuse people of being pedophiles in retaliation for being offended by a JOKE!Letterman Apologized – Now It’s Palin’s Turn!

  • MattMcD

When will Sarah Palin apologize for calling our president a terrorist?

  • SierraDrinker

Lee, that’s the best Huffpost column I’ve ready by anyone in months.

  • http://politicalpartypooper.wordpress.com/ Political Party Pooper

This won’t be a popular comment here, nevertheless, it is necessary.Lee, your article misses the point. I get why the liberals are upset at Palin. I also get why she is upset at Letterman. The joke was about her fourteen year old daughter, and anyone who says otherwise is just being purposefully ignorant. Mr. Letterman knows that Palin’s older daughter is Bristol, and he also knew she was not at the Yankee game. He didn’t name Bristol in his joke, but he did state that Sarah’s daughter was impregnated by Arod in the Seventh inning. The only daughter at the game is fourteen. Please, Lee, tell me you get the implication, or are we to assume you are as stupid as every person who didn’t?You seem to not understand the anger over the joke; this from liberals who perfected the art of “righteous and outrageous indignation” over the slightest words. Tell me, Lee. How would you have taken that joke if Letterman had used the Obama daughters as props?Had he done so, he would have been fired by now, and you know that. Stop playing the idiot. Even N.O.W. thought Letterman was an ass.

  • Stranahan

First off – you’re just plain wrong about the joke. The joke was about Bristol – that’s what every single person who heard that joke assumed. Nobody was keeping track of which daughter was at the game – in fact, nobody really KNEW about the game. The way they knew about the event was from the setup of joke – which didn’t mention which daughter, on purpose. The joke wasn’t accurate, in other words – but it didn’t effect it’s ability to work since it wasn’t an known event. And would the joke be appropriate about the Obama girls? Of course not – neither of them are teenage mothers as far as I know. Neither of them had their status as teen mothers hidden from the press for a period of time and neither of them has a parent who promotes abstinence only education. This wasn’t a joke that all of America was talking about. It lives on because that lying, stupid Sarah Palin made it a faux issue to keep herself in the spotlight. That’s the truth – the rest is tinsel.

  • http://politicalpartypooper.wordpress.com/ Political Party Pooper

How compassionate you are, Lee.David Letterman knew which of the Palins was at the game. Lee, how hard is it, really, to say the name “Bristol” within a joke, if that’s who the joke was about? You are streeeeeeeeetching.

Neither of them had their status as teen mothers hidden from the press for a period of time

This is not a big deal. In case you didn’t know, Lee, she was a minor then. You do realize there are privacy issues for pregnant minors, don’t you? No one in the Palin family was under ANY obligation to disclose that information. That you act as though this was a sin somehow only displays your “holier than thou” attitude more distinctly. It’s pathetic. The sin was committed by the media for disclosing the information WITHOUT permission. But that little crime somehow escapes you, doesn’t it, Lee?How convenient.

  • Stranahan

You know nothing about this….The Alaska press TOLD ME that they hid the Bristol Palin’s pregnancy for MONTHS. And – it’s news. If an Obama daughter got pregnant or came out of the closet or got engaged – it’s news. What Palin and McCain DID do was to parade the Palin family in front of the cameras themselves. So they made them fair game. The joke was about Bristol but based on people not knowing which daughter was at the game. but you know what – it’s WAY too much analysis for a joke…Great – hate the joke…whateverThje point is that Palin LIED about it the same way she LIES about EVERYTHING. The Bridge to nowhere and her wardrobe and most importantly – POLICY and ISSUES. She has shown time and again she can’t tell the truth about anything.

  • http://politicalpartypooper.wordpress.com/ Political Party Pooper

Lee,When did the families of elected officials surrender their right to privacy? What you call news is nothing more than slowing down to see if you can find the blood at an accident on the highway. It’s not news, Lee. It’s something to gossip about. But our media these days deals as much in gossip as they do in truth, and that’s the problem.Suppose one of the Obama daughters did get pregnant. So what? That’s news? Apparently…and it decides for them what their options are.Lee, you are in the business of the media. Your perspective is skewed. The little Obama girls did not ask for your obsessive interest in them, and neither did the Palin girls. DO THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO PRIVACY? Or did they stop being Americans the moment their parents ran for office? It wasn’t news. The only real news that came out of all of that was how vicious some people in the media really were. Now that’s news.

@ PPPYou mypoic twit!Aside from Letterman’s unfettered RIGHT to tell any damn joke he pleases;Aside from the incomprehensibly unlikely premise that Letterman INTENTIONALLY joked about the sexual assault of a child;Despite the tortured, ex post facto analysis of Letterman’s intention required to arrive at “statutory rape joke”;Aside from the absolute requirement that Bristol Palin’s pregnancy, her mother’s craven exploitation thereof, AND a HOST of other comedians making THE EXACT SAME JOKE be completely and totally ignored, THIS joke requires outrage. And why? Because it was WILLOW at the game.THIS TIME Bristol had AN ALIBI.BULLSHIT. UTTER FUCKING PRATTLE!How long do you think Sarah Palin was SEETHING over the Bristol jokes? How long do you think she was waiting, as is her wont, for an opportunity to STRIKE BACK at those who would rub her nose in her own hypocrisy and failed parenting skills…her vapid shadow of “Family Values”.It would NOT surprise me in the LEAST to learn that Sarah Palin was consciously flipping Willow for Bristol – back and forth – back and forth – just WAITING for someone to make a “knocked up” joke when Willow HAD to be “the target”.HOW DARE YOU JOKE ABOUT RAPING MY INNOCENT DAUGHTER!!!There is NO limit to how low Sarah Palin will stoop in exploiting her spawn for selfish gain.SHE cast her 14-year-old daughter in rape imagery. NOT LETTERMAN.SARAH PALIN accused David Letterman of being a threat to children: “…good idea to keep Willow away from David Letterman.”Sarah Palin, who pimps one knocked up daughter as the poster child for “Don’t Fuck”…Sarah Palin, who now comes off a the righteous, indignant defender of a child’s right to be free of RAPE!!!Sarah Palin…who deigned to appear on SNL ONE WEEK AFTER they made the EXACT SAME JOKE ABOUT BRISTOL.Sarah Palin ACCUSES David Letterman of being a threat to children!A JOKE is one thing. Accusations of being unsafe in the presence of children is another, sir.One is a JOKE, protected by the First Amendment. The other is nothing more than vicious, spiteful SLANDER.How LONG do you think Sarah Palin was waiting for that opportunity to cast her youngest daughter as a rape victim in order to extract revenge for all the jokes inflicted on her older daughter? The fact that the jokes came AS A RESULT OF SARAH PALIN’S OWN CRAVEN EXPLOITATION only makes the desire for revenge – and to blame anyone but herself – that much stronger. This was a sick and twisted ploy from the very start. It had nothing to do with the joke, or with Letterman. This was a calculated bit of Palin politics from the start.

  • http://cousinavi.wordpress.com cousinavi

AND, PPP, in response to your specific hypothetical regarding knocked up Obama daughters…It remains a PRIVATE MATTER up to and until the point where MIchelle Obama starts dragging a pregnant Sasha around the country to STUMP for some party platform like “Family Values”.When you suit your kids up and send them into the game, you can forget about objecting to hard fouls. When you keep your kids ON THE BENCH, they can’t BE FOULED.Your BULLSHIT false equivalency cuts no mustard with thinking people.

  • http://politicalpartypooper.wordpress.com/ Political Party Pooper

avi,You go on believing everything you wrote. It is clear you are looking for any excuse to hate Sarah Palin. I don’t care about her one way or the other, but you should take care of your words when an impartial person is telling you that things are being taken too far.I’m not worried about Mrs. Palin, but I am worried that your hateful attitude can be turned into a policy by liberals. You seem to believe that so long as you hate them, it’s okay to ridicule them and trample their rights. Careful, avi, there are people in this world that feel exactly the same way about you and yours.

One is a JOKE, protected by the First Amendment. The other is nothing more than vicious, spiteful SLANDER.

Yep. Slander is not protected by the first amendment. Neither are jokes. But you go on and believe they are. Right up to the point where some person drags you into court and sues you for sexual harassment due to the jokes you told around her.

at those who would rub her nose in her own hypocrisy and failed parenting skills

Who made you the judge as to what was successful or failed parenting skills? Are all teenage mothers the product of parents who failed them? You must be such a pleasure to be around, you judgmental ass. Look in the mirror the next time you are going to judge someone else.

  • http://cousinavi.wordpress.com cousinavi

@ PPPWhat a bunch of horseshit false equivocation.Jokes told by a comedian DOING HIS JOB is not the same thing as poisoning a work environment with harassing behavior. To try to equate the two only demonstrates the paucity of your argument and your thinking.Go ahead – TRY to sue a comic for telling a joke. Set it up as harassment, or intentional infliction of emotional duress, see if you get past the door.My hateful attitude, as you call it, is the result of watching a blithering moron degrade the political process with lies, hypocrisy and the craven exploitation of children. When that same person then turns around and points her holier-than-thou finger at someone else and accuses THEM of exploiting her children – something she does at the drop of hat – AND her accusation is based on actions that are NO DIFFERENT that the hundred others she either ignored or condoned, I fucking well object.Jokes told by comedians, you flippant twat, ARE FULLY protected by the First Amendment. Do some goddamn research before you come in here and deign to lecture ME on the legal fine points of Free Speech. I happen to KNOW what I’m talking about, as opposed to your spotty, patchwork rag of a legal opinion.I don’t have to judge what is a successful parent. Palin’s OWN words are sufficient proof of that. On the one hand she advocates ABSTINENCE. On the other hand, her teenage daughter is knocked up in her own home. To then make that child into a traveling poster for Republican Family Values says more than enough. Hypocrisy is as hypocrisy does.Speaking of hypocrisy, you two-faced prat, who the fuck do you think you are to suggest it’s wrong to judge people with one face, and then turn around and call me hateful and judgmental and with other? If you, like Sarah Palin, cannot PRACTICE what you PREACH, then just shut your condescending, ignorant mouth.

  • http://politicalpartypooper.wordpress.com/ Political Party Pooper

Avi,You sure do like adjectives, I’ll give you that. And I’m both condescending and ignorant? That’s a pretty powerful combination. Few people would have the balls to take that on, but you, Avi, are no coward, I can see that.Yes, you are judgmental. No, I’m not judging you; I’m just stating facts. Yes, you hate Sarah Palin; again, just stating facts.

  • http://cousinavi.wordpress.com cousinavi

@ PPPThat you can’t imagine how ignorance and condescension might operate at the same time only confirms your ignorance. Posting that ignorance, complete with more hypocritical judgment, merely confirms the condescension.Wow. You’re a walking bit of irony, aren’t you?And don’t presume to read my mind. You haven’t the vocabulary.
