Specter Supports the Public Option

At least, he does now.

Though it’s unclear what exactly this means.

“Schumer has it right about having a public component,” Specter said.

As we’ve followed with Schumer’s position, this could mean a compromised public option which more closely resembles the stupid co-op idea — or it could have a ten-year trigger. Who knows.

If Specter said he supports the House Progressive Caucus notion of a public option, I’d be a little more excited.

I think he was more afraid of those union guys more than anything else. He knows he can’t get away from an angry mob.Saying something like “Schumer has it right about having a public component” makes it sound like the conversation’s just started and he hasn’t had time to look closely at it yet, but hey, it sounds like it might be an idea we can try after we take a look at all the other ideas ’cause something has to be done about blah blah blah but there’s a lot on the agenda this year blah blah get me out of here blah. His waffling on this is telling. He’s not in the bag just yet.

Specter is in deep doo doo.Poll: Specter’s numbers dive since ‘conversion’By BOB WARNERPhiladelphia Daily Newswarnerb@phillynews.com 215-854-5885The strong backing of Democratic Party leaders has done little to change slumping public support for the party’s newest convert, U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter. Only 28 percent of all those surveyed say that he deserves re-election, according to the latest Keystone Poll, and double that number say it’s time for a change.http://www.philly.com/dailynews/local/20090625_Poll__Specter_s_numbers_dive_since__conversion_.html

Maybe he’s angling for some more “strong backing.” You think he’ll keep waffling until he gets some assurance from the White House that they’ll be there to campaign for him when he’s up for re-election?
