Worst Person

Richard M. Nixon in newly released White House tapes:

“There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white. Or a rape.”

How many ways is this awful? While, yes, sometimes an abortion is necessary, let’s start with the dickish, racist notion that Mr. Nixon ranked “rape” and “a black and a white” as equally bad news, and go from there.

I dunno… it seems like the rape was the afterthought there. Something godawful like a black and a white… you know, or a rape or whatever.

That’s so awful that it is kind of awesome; like, it perfectly crystallizes a mode of thinking in such a short space. It is elegant, like a haiku, to put that much wrong in so little characters. It also reads like a line that Carol O’Connor could possibly say in an episode of ALL IN THE FAMILY.This makes me happy that my dad was on Nixon’s enemies list.

I bet that James Von Brunn would agree with Tricky Dicky on the former, but not necessarily the latter. Also, I’m sure none of wingnuts are working to spin this, since none of them see how it’s even remotely controversial.

Now you know what kind of assholes we had to deal with in the 70s. I think he made that statement after the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.He said shit like that all the time. He was the first President I ever truly hated. He was a horrible little asshole.

My memories of America, in my youth, and during the Nixon years especially, is one of darkness. It’s amazing my generation grew up having hope. That’s a testament to the enduring principles our founding fathers built into this nation.

It’s worth pointing out that if Nixon’s opinion of abortion had become law, that the current President of the United States wouldn’t be around.

The thing is . . . I know people right now that wouldn’t blink an eye at this sentiment. That’s the dilemma. We see the thought process it takes to come up with that kind of statement as a fundamental flaw. They think its rational.
